o.k., i'm not on here much to ask questions but i'm truly stumped - my sister has three beautiful kids - not just cute kids but strangely etheral ... right - a casting agent has asked one of the children to audition for Welch's Grape Juice - right - is it right to expose your children at a young age? yay or nay - my sister says the commercial will pay 15,000 ... and will be used for college fund (which is something we both lacked growing up) - she's a good mother - would not turn into a stage strange mother - is this still right? I just feel quesy and told her so....opinions please.

DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 October 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno Dan - i mean it's not my decision, but, i just have visions of three natural weirdo innocent beauties turning into jon benet ramseys.... i mean, i dunno...

my sister said - she will take them out and if they don't want to do it then they don't have to ...

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

how likely is it that people will remember a welch's grape juice commercial with pixies?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 14 October 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

sigh. yer right, of course, question closed, i guess i dig the fact that they have a great childhood, i.e. money, things they want to do, yet still remaining innocent and happy kids without the weirdness of my sister and i - i.e. no parental suicides, mental hospitals, delusions of elvis....

the issue is obv. mine. but still - it just *feels* weird. i.e. can't help it if i'm a good uncle...!

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

oh no - breaking down - must control and retain essential trollness .... hahahaa....

my sister and i had a hour long argument about it all....and was still anxious and worried, needed strangers to tell me that she is not leading them down to the path of child star hell.

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know how old the kids are, but you say your sis is a good mother, and if so, she should be able to explain the situation to the kids, respect their decisions and be an anchor for them. what about the kids? do they strike you as likely to become enamored with child stardom, or is this something they'll do if their mom explains that it is a one-off and will help them down the road?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 14 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

it could be a good thing if only for the money. done once, used as an adventure-type-wow-thing.
i am sure your sister has thought this out, the biggest problem i would have ( as a mum ) is the possibility of future requests due to the exposure, and the temptation to go further for the extra money.
i would only do it as a 'one-off' thing.
then stay away from it all.

donna (donna), Monday, 14 October 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno - she's a good mother - yeah, i'm obviously 100 percent down on it - but it's not the first time she's been asked - they are 3, 4 and 7 - when i talked to my wife, she just said, bloody hell, of course, her kids are beautiful. but - i dunno - it's easy to think, a child will want to do this, and if the child wants to do it, you should let them, right? that was my sister's argument and she explained it to them ... she has doubts about it as well, or else we won't be arguing about it on the phone for an hour (as we are solid front, you know) but this casting agent is ringing her all the time and telling her insane stuff - as she is hooked into hollywood, etc, etc... (canada is the new hollywood)....

it's strange - but i know my sister and she will refused. it was just odd because my sister was talking about how that could lead into other things - the only thing that has been done were pictures were taken.

it's pointless - i know her, she will say no - but it's insane some of the money that she was talking about - 1,500 a week for movie work, etc...etc...

but she is steadfast.

she this is pointless - she will say no. as my sister is a yes or no person at the end of the day (unlike me who is an anxious maybe lifer)

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i just recieved an email from my sister and she's doing it donna's way - i.e. adventure aspect. and it will end there - as they are all thinking it's an adventure. *phew* it's so crazy temping the money that they were banding about!!!

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks, guys for hearing me out.

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Doomie!

Your sis isn't about to become a stage mom, they don't need the money that much - sounds like ideal background for letting kids do a bit of work. Just make her put the cash away and not let anyone touch it until the kids are 18.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 14 October 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

hey suzy...

I know, my sister is a strong woman - but i can't help it I love those kids, crazy mad and am coming to ontario just to see them at christmas!!!

they don't need the money but it's all the ickiness associated....

plus her kids are little weirdos, not stage kids....the stage kids will eat them alive!

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

that's good - the kids will not need steady work or absurd sums of money, and certainly not at the expense of their childhood. but 15 grand in the bank will be great for them as it will give them lots of options when the time comes (possibly not just college fund), and we all want to give our kids the chance to do or have things we didn't...

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 14 October 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(possibly not just college fund), and we all want to give our kids the chance to do or have things we didn't...

boxcubed you have summed up my sister's attitude to parenting - cycle of abuse pfah. . . they are great kids and she's got the money to let the kids do more than we did - which was swimming lessons at the YMCA for two weeks...!! ooops - sorry kids dad is in the mental hospital again and will have to spend the money on him....

christ, why was i born with a dead elvis obsessed parent....

you want to hear something funny? or ironic - guess what my sister does? she's a manager of a suicide hotline.

she's got stories that will depress the hell out of you!

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

she's got stories that will depress the hell out of you!

(that was a joke by the way....she's never told me anything and to be honest i don't think i would ever want to know)

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i will tell if you if it ever airs - hahahaha - doom-e's nieces - classic or dud. actually - nah - i will go ballistic if someone duds them!!!!!

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

aawww...heck - i love my sister too!!

*last verges of trolliness gone*

*creeps away*

doom-e, Monday, 14 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to uni with (one of )The Milky Bar Kid(s), and he seemed perfectly well adjusted, relative to the control group of other students

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a good idea, but make sure your niece doesn't go the way of Todd Bridges, Dana Plato or Nick Dastoor.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

If they aren't allowed to do it then s/he will spend the rest of their lives ruing the fact that they could have been the Welch's Grape Juice kid.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only should they be allowed to do it, but if they enjoy it and the opportunity comes up, they should be allowed to run with it for as far as they can go.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to be the welch's grape juice bald gap-toothed double chinned man! $15k? I'll do it for 5.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

5000 or just 5?
