Think he needs his own thread now.

Very sad. I met him on occasion (mostly just at holiday parties) when he was editor for the Washington City Paper, and he happily said hey and talked to folks like me who were just contributing small pieces.
He has endeared himself to many--I see tweets from Carrie Brownstein, countless journalists and others.

He had just done this earlier:
Glenn Greenwald @ggreenwald · 13h 13 hours agoTonight's @TimesTalks re CITIZENFOUR w/Laura Poitras, Snowden, me, @carr2n is sold out: will be live-streamed 6:45 pm http://timestalks.com/laura-poitras-glenn-greenwald-edward-snowden.html …

People like Ron Howard, Judd Apatow and Michael Moore have been tweeting tributes as well. Unusual for a journalist to be so well-regarded outside journalism.

Not too many journalists have starred in a widely-distributed feature documentary, to be fair.
Anyway, he was pretty great. RIP.

The Night Of The Gun is fantastic. Watching a couple of clips of him now - he was so sharp! So in the moment, but always thinking!

@ggreenwald David Carr was a great journalist & a great person. He introduced us to his daughter after the event, who he was always praising. So sad-RIP

shocker, though hard living invariably catches up w/most people (how is keith richards still alive?), tears a gaping hole in the NYT and old-school news media in general.

Ta-Nehisi Coates earlier on Twitter:
Re: @carr2n and diversity. @jelani9 pointed his eye for talent and his support for black writers. But the true testament is not how many black writers he brought to @wcp who worked out. It's how many he brought through who did not. @carr2n let black writers bomb, just like he let white writers bomb. And that is so essential. @carr2n was no Branch Rickey. And you did not have to be "twice as good." You just had to do your fucking job. You just had to go report. You just had to, as he once told me, "Stop coming in my office telling stories. And start coming in here bringing stories."

The auto-mourn on Twitter is gross...a lot of brand burnishing going on with the "my dinners with him were sublime" crap

Then you might not like this piece, or how it ends. But maybe Hamilton has some good points, yes?

And considering Tom Arnold, who knew him over three decades, posted this in response to Nolan's piece, maybe cut a little slack?

Yeah obv he was lovable and had a lot of friends, just something I noticed. He's like a fetish object for "authenticity"

I had forgotten he was the first 'Carpetbagger' at the Times, ie blogging about movie-award season, which he made much more entertaining than it had a right to be. But still the NYT puts in the 4th graf of his obit "He championed offbeat movies like 'Juno'..." Rather bizarre stuff to nearly lead with.

Exactly. He meant a heck of a lot to the Times brand as it circles the drain image-wise...that's why he was the "Page One" movie poster boy
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 13 February 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link
that's how I knew him: the Carpetbagger guy.

he was a weirdo, huh? i didn't read the memoir. just went to the site for it and watched some of the videos for the book. its not often someone can talk about beating up women for years and then become everyone's best friend. don't think i want to read the book after seeing the videos. i know how bad drunks can be. weird to think of him getting into fistfights every night.
