RED SKY AT NIGHT SHEPHERDS DELIGHT: RED SKY IN THE MORNING SHEPHERDS WARNING.

This means that evening crimson = something nice to look at and nothing more. Morning crimson means storms certainly on the way. Thus I was taught when small in the countryside. Give me your similar local weatherlore, rubbish or visionary...

(it has been hot and heavy all day: but no rain...)

mark s, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ring around moon means rain tomorrow; my nose bleeds or my penis peircing trembles - the weather has become drier.

Geoff, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thursday. Shepherds Pie for dinner.

Pete, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When cows sit down, it will piss down. Or words to that effect.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually you know Mr Sinker, I too woke up with a start at about 4am and witness the massive red sky warning over London. It is getting very close now though, I give it a good hour before the Heavens open.

Red Dawn -terrible film. (To be fair, Red Sonja and Red Heat are equally poor. Films with Red in the title...I see a new thread on the horizon).

Pete, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heavens are leaking gently.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How pretty, must remember that pleasing expression for its started pissing down.

Pete, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really should start getting up at dawn more. I based my clothing for today on a weather forecast I heard when I was half-asleep at 9.15. I'm sure it said the heavens were only going to gently leak in the West. Now I'm going to get drenched on my way to the pub tonight.

Nick, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HA! I have both umbrella and sunglasses so am prepared for anything. Though the white ankle socks are gonna get ruined. Doh.

Emma, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cats and dogs can sense storms, so if you see them acting weird, it means a storm is coming. If a pine cone closes up it's gonna rain.

jel, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The sky is red most spring and fall mornings. Usually it doesn't storm. Thus, the saying is wrong.

Lyra, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jel, or it could be an earthquake. A japanese friend of ours has a dog who hid under the bed. Few hours later there was an earthquake.

nathalie, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well in the end it was a rather nice dry evening. Stupid fuckig shepherds.

Nick, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You'd think shepherds would like rainy days. They just put the cows, ahem, sheep in the sheepshed and go put your feet up in front of the snooker.

I fear I am showing a degree of ignorance about the countryside here and will attract yet another withering comment from Robin.

Pete, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sheep can stay outside in the rain, surely, as they are covered in lanolin which must make them showerproof?

Emma, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...

RED SKY AT NIGHT SHEPHERDS DELIGHT: RED SKY IN THE MORNING SHEPHERDS WARNING.

My mother always carries on with this crap. She says it all mysterious-like.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

In geography at school our teacher explained:

The red sky is caused by the sun's light refracting in sand particles; in Europe, the sand particles are caused by a tropical contintental air mass moving northwards. This carries sand from the Sahara desert. A tropical continental air mass means warm air.

Hence, red sky at night, shepherds' delight; red sky in the morning, shepherds' delight as well.

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.
