When I was little, there was this cheese that came in a bright red packing which me and my parents called 'red cheese'. Calling white cheese red caused my little brother to be red/white colorblind for a year. True story.

The dress rotates clockwise imho.

StanM, Saturday, 28 February 2015 16:38 (ten years ago)

Is the question "what color is the physical dress?" or "what color is the picture of the dress?" Because they are different.

http://nymag.com/selectall/2018/05/is-this-voice-saying-yanny-or-laurel.html

i heard 'yanny' the first 15 times, took a break and now only hear 'laurel'

, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 20:56 (seven years ago)

lmao what

it's "Laurel" to me though I suspect it has a lot to do with what speakers you're listening through? weird

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 21:00 (seven years ago)

neither one

Both depending on what I'm listening for. Kinda trippy

albvivertine, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 21:12 (seven years ago)

I heard yanny but I played it to my housemate without any context and he said laurel

"Yanny" on speakers and headphones

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 21:23 (seven years ago)

I tried it on a Plantronics Blackwire set of headphones and my laptop's built-in speakers and it still sounds like "yanny" to me.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 21:25 (seven years ago)

Yanny at first, then Yorrel a few times, then just Laurel... Laurel... Laurel... Laurel...

ITS LAUREL

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 23:46 (seven years ago)

So I clearly heard Yanny for the first few times. But it wasn't until a few seconds later when I started thinking about how someone could possibly hear it as Laurel that I suddenly perceived it as a much deeper voice that was definitely saying Laurel. After that, I couldn't go back to hearing Yanny in the higher-pitched way I had initially heard it. Sort of extremely trippy.

del griffith, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 02:23 (seven years ago)

^^^yeah earlier i was just hearing yanny and now i hear both the high-pitched yanny and low-pitched laurel

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 02:25 (seven years ago)

on my nice speakers here at home, I can sort of pick which one I want to hear before it repeats and I'll hear that... at work, it's nothing but laurel.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:14 (seven years ago)

sorry everyone - it's yanny :)

flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:15 (seven years ago)

though I can hear a trace of laurel underneath, in a low voice. i should probably play this on a loop for an hour and see if it changes

flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:16 (seven years ago)

I have no idea how it could sound like anything other than Laurel, but then I played it for my son and he couldn't make it out, I asked if it sounded like Laurel and he said no, I asked if it sounded like Yanny, and he said maybe. So weird.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:21 (seven years ago)

When I play it over my stereo speakers I can just barely hear whispering that sounds maybe like Yanny, but Laurel is loud and clear.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:24 (seven years ago)

more proof that i have a superior bird brain

flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:36 (seven years ago)

i can hear both now, after only hearing yanny all day - my husband was convinced it was laurel, and as i was listening to it on repeat through headphones, i said something to him and just as i tuned back in i finally heard laurel. you kind of have to unfocus your hearing the same way unfocusing your eyes on that spinning-dancer thing can change your perception of it spinning clockwise or anti-clockwise.

just1n3, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:49 (seven years ago)

At normal speed I can only hear Laurel, it doesn't sound remotely like Yanny.

But when the clip is pitch-shifted down 20 or 30% I hear Yanny, or more accurately, Yalie or Yarry.

When the clip is pitch-shifted up I continue to hear only Laurel.

Josefa, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 04:05 (seven years ago)

People are saying that Laurel people are focused on the lower register and Yanny people are focused on the higher register, but I don't know how to square that with the fact that I only hear Yanny when the clip is artificially lowered.

Josefa, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 04:17 (seven years ago)

People are saying that Laurel people are focused on the lower register and Yanny people are focused on the higher register, but I don't know how to square that with the fact that I only hear Yanny when the clip is artificially lowered.

i guess lowering it shifts the already low laurel out of the audible register, and the high yanny into a normal register.

lana del boy (ledge), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 06:12 (seven years ago)

if you do a steep high pass filter at 1500 Hz it sounds like yanny

cr.ht (crüt), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 06:28 (seven years ago)

it sounds like they ran "laurel" through a ring modulator and recorded it at a 16kHz sample rate

cr.ht (crüt), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 06:29 (seven years ago)

Internet thing in actually boring shocker

albvivertine, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 06:37 (seven years ago)

i guess more likely it's just artifacts of lo-fi recording and not a ring modulator

here's the original source recording, which is unambiguously "laurel" https://audio.vocab.com/1.0/us/L/1DF66F7GBFQ2U.mp3

cr.ht (crüt), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 06:43 (seven years ago)

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 06:53 (seven years ago)

Informal survey in my house had a clear majority for 'yammy' (sic), strong showing for 'turn that off it's irritating'. Results did not vary whether played on phone or through amp with bass turned up and treble turned down.

lana del boy (ledge), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 08:02 (seven years ago)

on single-eared headphones on the work computer it's absolutely clearly and unambiguously "Laurel", can't even hear how the other thing would sound

look I'm sorry it was only a joke (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 08:10 (seven years ago)

nope, only Yanny. I've tried it a bunch of ways and it's Yanny, but like Ledge says, more like 'Yammy'.

I get Yelly, but I have trained myself to hear Laurel too. Still Yelly is more natural.

Alba, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 09:42 (seven years ago)

Google Assistant heard Laurel. Siri heard "Yeah"

Alba, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 09:43 (seven years ago)

Clearly Laurel but wish I'd heard it before knowing it was either that or, somehow, apparently, bizarrely, this other word.

nashwan, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 11:04 (seven years ago)

I still can't hear Laurel, even on the "original source". Maybe I'm influenced by the fact that I have a work colleague we call Yanny, and he's on practically every conference call I'm on with the US - so I hear that word a lot.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 11:23 (seven years ago)

I heard "Yanny" the first time, then I could flip it at will for a few times, then it was "Laurel... Laurel... Laurel..." and I couldn't make it change.

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 11:26 (seven years ago)

I've been playing the the MP3 in Audacity and I cannot discern a "L" sound at the start, no matter how I re-pitch and filter it. Regardless of the rest of it (-anny/-amly/-ammy), it always starts with a "yr" sound.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 11:28 (seven years ago)

People are saying that Laurel people are focused on the lower register and Yanny people are focused on the higher register, but I don't know how to square that with the fact that I only hear Yanny when the clip is artificially lowered.

This makes no goddamn sense, why would you pitch it down to hear the lower frequencies

The “eea” on both ends is a voice encoder / sample rate artifact associated with the way the text-to-speech synthesis makes the https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental,_alveolar_and_postalveolar_lateral_approximants#dark_l sound

This is so dumb I’m mad

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 12:29 (seven years ago)

I saw the Vox piece about this yesterday. Listened the first time and very clearly heard "Yanny" or something close to it, then read the rest of the article with all the possible explanations, listened again and now cannot hear anything but "Laurel" no matter how hard I try.

Westworld more like Worstworld right? (Phil D.), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 12:34 (seven years ago)

That’s good, good for you

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 12:40 (seven years ago)

Reloaded the MP3 posted above into Audacity and it's quite clearly Laurel now. I find it difficult to believe it's the same file, it sounds like a completely different thing than I listened to two hours ago. The crappy, nasal, nth-gen recording on the NYMag and Guardian articles still sounds like Yanny.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 12:42 (seven years ago)

I've gone full Laurel after hearing a tweaked version. The original no longer has any trace of Yelly (or Yanny) for me.

Alba, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 12:50 (seven years ago)

what an edifying experience that must have been

Our brains have a strong bias toward seeing faces, such as seeing The Man in the Moon in a bunch of randomly placed craters, plains, lights and shadows. So, my brain insists on seeing a somewhat grotesque puppy/dog face, even though it is probably just some weirdly bunched fabric with maybe some other elements thrown in, like buttons.
