When I was little, there was this cheese that came in a bright red packing which me and my parents called 'red cheese'. Calling white cheese red caused my little brother to be red/white colorblind for a year. True story.

I heard yanny but I played it to my housemate without any context and he said laurel

I tried it on a Plantronics Blackwire set of headphones and my laptop's built-in speakers and it still sounds like "yanny" to me.

So I clearly heard Yanny for the first few times. But it wasn't until a few seconds later when I started thinking about how someone could possibly hear it as Laurel that I suddenly perceived it as a much deeper voice that was definitely saying Laurel. After that, I couldn't go back to hearing Yanny in the higher-pitched way I had initially heard it. Sort of extremely trippy.

^^^yeah earlier i was just hearing yanny and now i hear both the high-pitched yanny and low-pitched laurel

on my nice speakers here at home, I can sort of pick which one I want to hear before it repeats and I'll hear that... at work, it's nothing but laurel.

I have no idea how it could sound like anything other than Laurel, but then I played it for my son and he couldn't make it out, I asked if it sounded like Laurel and he said no, I asked if it sounded like Yanny, and he said maybe. So weird.

When I play it over my stereo speakers I can just barely hear whispering that sounds maybe like Yanny, but Laurel is loud and clear.

i can hear both now, after only hearing yanny all day - my husband was convinced it was laurel, and as i was listening to it on repeat through headphones, i said something to him and just as i tuned back in i finally heard laurel. you kind of have to unfocus your hearing the same way unfocusing your eyes on that spinning-dancer thing can change your perception of it spinning clockwise or anti-clockwise.

At normal speed I can only hear Laurel, it doesn't sound remotely like Yanny.

But when the clip is pitch-shifted down 20 or 30% I hear Yanny, or more accurately, Yalie or Yarry.

When the clip is pitch-shifted up I continue to hear only Laurel.

People are saying that Laurel people are focused on the lower register and Yanny people are focused on the higher register, but I don't know how to square that with the fact that I only hear Yanny when the clip is artificially lowered.

How about every human is a stupid animal? Can we use these tricks (and the thirst shots at the bottom of every news story) to set a baseline?

i guess lowering it shifts the already low laurel out of the audible register, and the high yanny into a normal register.

if you do a steep high pass filter at 1500 Hz it sounds like yanny

Informal survey in my house had a clear majority for 'yammy' (sic), strong showing for 'turn that off it's irritating'. Results did not vary whether played on phone or through amp with bass turned up and treble turned down.

I saw the Vox piece about this yesterday. Listened the first time and very clearly heard "Yanny" or something close to it, then read the rest of the article with all the possible explanations, listened again and now cannot hear anything but "Laurel" no matter how hard I try.

Reloaded the MP3 posted above into Audacity and it's quite clearly Laurel now. I find it difficult to believe it's the same file, it sounds like a completely different thing than I listened to two hours ago. The crappy, nasal, nth-gen recording on the NYMag and Guardian articles still sounds like Yanny.

I've gone full Laurel after hearing a tweaked version. The original no longer has any trace of Yelly (or Yanny) for me.

Our brains have a strong bias toward seeing faces, such as seeing The Man in the Moon in a bunch of randomly placed craters, plains, lights and shadows. So, my brain insists on seeing a somewhat grotesque puppy/dog face, even though it is probably just some weirdly bunched fabric with maybe some other elements thrown in, like buttons.

It is impossible to see anything else but horror until you physically turn it sideways!
