keys phone wallet : how should these be ranked in importance in the context of "don't forget this before you leave the house!"

The most common ordering seems to be phone, keys, wallet; but I think keys should always come first since with keys you can always go back and get your phone and wallet. Also, I think wallet should come before phone, but for some rhythmic reason, wallet just sounds better at the end. Iamb? Maybe by 2020 everyone's phone will have replaced keys and wallets...

keys wallet phone is actually correct imo but in practice I'll forget my wallet ten times for every time I forget either other

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 2 March 2015 16:28 (ten years ago)

yea i say keys wallet phone in that order

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)

Definitely keys. You can go back for anything else, forget your keys and you're fucked.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 March 2015 16:48 (ten years ago)

keys, phone, ipod, wallet.

how's life, Monday, 2 March 2015 16:57 (ten years ago)

i can't remember the last time i forgot my keys though b/c i've pretty much always needed them to lock the door on the way out

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 16:58 (ten years ago)

I also say "keys wallet phone", which works in terms of importance and also euphony

but the last two live in my room and keys live near the door, so "wallet phone keys" is a more useful chant as I come out of my room and head towards the key holder

keys wallet phone ffs

the first allows me shelter, the second allows me things, the third basically just makes me miserable and should probably be left at home to begin with

lol @ all those gear dorks carrying around knives like they live in the fucking woods

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 17:31 (ten years ago)

My house has a keypad to get in the front door so I don't necessarily NEED keys. I keep them and my wallet together so often skip both if I'm just walking the dog or whatever. Never leave without my phone.

keys, wallet, phone

leaving your phone at home is actually kind of an awesome, freeing feeling, although i always kind of get this irrational "oh shit what if i've got 10,000 missed calls and everybody i know died" cringy feeling when i go to pick up my phone when i get back

Yeah keys definitely. It's the worst feeling in the world when you realize you've forgotten your keys inside while the door is closing in slo-mo...
Wallet can be annoying but if you're out with someone you can always work it out.
Phone not big a deal.

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:10 (ten years ago)

keys first makes the most sense but in my i hear Lincoln saying "Phone Keys Wallet P-K-W"

Philip Nunez, Monday, 2 March 2015 20:07 (ten years ago)

actually, if you forget your keys doesn't that just mean you left your door unlocked?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 2 March 2015 20:11 (ten years ago)

keys definitely the most important.

If I'm outside and I realize I forgot my wallet I always go back in to get it. If I'm outside and I realize I forgot my phone, sometimes I'll just not bother and live without a phone for a couple of hours (just like every time I went outside 15 years ago).

If I'm outside without my keys, I am fucked obviously. Have somehow managed not to do this in a couple of years though.

silverfish, Monday, 2 March 2015 20:20 (ten years ago)

actually, if you forget your keys doesn't that just mean you left your door unlocked?

depends on the kind of door and lock you have. with mine, the door can close without keys. but you can't open it without !
and in Paris it usually costs at least 70€ (sometimes much more) to have it opened by a locksmith... which is a shame because most of the times, it takes them 2 secs, using a x-ray paper...
I always tell myself I should have a x-ray paper under my door carpet, in case !

One big advantage of having recently given up smoking is that I no longer have to go 'keys wallet phone tobacco rizla filters lighter'.

I had never seen this before until I got accidentally locked out of a place in Florence, and the owner of the rental flat had to call a locksmith who proudly showed us the x-ray and kept pointing at his shoulder.

joygoat, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 14:54 (ten years ago)

Thankfully I have to lock the door to get out of here.
have definitely forgotten my phone before and probably my wallet though it lives in my waistcoat pocket so tends to be on me most of the time.

But I can't lock the key inside the house. Could leave it in the door though. Remember I did that when i was first moving in and had to come all the way back out here half way across town then a bus ride before I could let myself in at the far end.

Am always trying to make sure i don't leave anything on the bus these days too. Subseqyuently checking that gloves and bus pass are still on me when I get up.

haha when i was a teenage stoner living w/ my parents it was like "keys, wallet, weed, pipe, lighter, visine eyedrops, altoids, water bottle, cologne sampler". a stoner friend of mine would make anyone visiting his house hold all his shit in their pockets if his mom was home, like he was worried his mom would search him. so i'd end up with two pockets full of weed paraphernalia, mine and his

Something like thirteen years ago, I realized that I'd left my keys in my apartment as my roommates were already on their way out of town for the weekend. You better believe I've obsessively patted myself down every time I've left home since.

Voted phone but then I remembered that the city I now live in will not let me travel many places without a physical Metrocard so now I realise I should have gone wallet.

Alba, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 00:58 (five years ago)

keys phone wallet I reckon

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 00:58 (five years ago)

Keys are a bit more important than they'd otherwise be now I'm married, because I work off a laptop that's locked away each night in my desk drawer so I'd have to ask the office manager nicely for the skeleton key if I wanted to do any work.

Alba, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:01 (five years ago)

I'm just amused, being of sufficient age to remember when pocket mobile phones weren't yet a thing, how this device transmuted from something nobody had to something most of us will panic over if we realize we forgot to take it with us. How again did I go anywhere without worrying how I'd contact someone if I suddenly collapsed, or about how someone could reach me?

Lee626, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:02 (five years ago)

That wasn't a very clear sentence. What I meant is: laptop considerations aside, keys aren't a big deal now I'm married because I can always arrange for my wife to let me in.

Alba, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:03 (five years ago)

Voted keys but tbh should’ve been wallet.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:04 (five years ago)

XXpost, yeah but now our phones are removing the need to carry things that were previously essential, like money or travel passes.

keys, ID. I can do without phone and wallet usually.

i once locked myself out of my sublet apt while walking my dog (no phone/wallet). They were the only set of keys, the owner was across the country and I had somewhere to be and nowhere to put a 75 lb dog. Thank fuck the neighbor was home and I always leave kitchen windows cracked open all year round. I managed to get into the apt out their window and through our fire escape. I had to shout to the people in the other building "I'm not breaking in!"

Yerac, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:09 (five years ago)

Increasingly go out without my wallet because my phone pays for stuff. Sadly still need wallet for id, Medicare and transit card, Melbourne has only managed to enable transit for Android so far.

New South Wales has moved to a phone based digital drivers license. We’re so close we to not having to carry a wallet. I haven’t used cash since I came back from Japan.

I should look into a smart door lock. I worry about the cyber security though, there’s no way I’m giving amazon the keys to my house.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:19 (five years ago)

So the answer is increasingly

Keys phone battery pack

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:19 (five years ago)

Lol this poll went almost five years?! I’m probably one of the few wallet voters, as it contains both my transit and work ID, as well as debit card to buy lunch. My house has a keyless lock, and I really only use my phone to do cryptic crosswords on the train.

A perfect transcript of a routine post (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:30 (five years ago)

I refuse to use an electronic lock or phone-based bus pass

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 01:50 (five years ago)

I switched to a flip phone a year ago and now it is much easier to leave my phone at home because it doesn't feel like I'm disconnecting a vital part of my brain. I voted keys because they seem like they're generally the most important, but actually my house has a spare key in a little case by the door with a combination lock, so in practice I often go out without them. The wallet is pretty hard to do without unless I'm just out for a walk.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 03:04 (five years ago)
