Inherent Vice vs. Big Lebowski vs. The Long Goodbye

Good comparison. The Long Goodbye easily for me. I think the other two are enjoyable but far from great.

TLG followed by IV, which I've seen twice and more than holds up whereas TBL still makes no sense and isn't particularly funny.

Inherent Vice is Pynchon @ the movies and it wasn't shit -- in fact it was a really good film, and I am v thankful for that.

In some people's opinion anything altman directed is a masterwork, so I'd guess that Long Goodbye is the first referenced. Getting down to the remaining two, I'd say that the aura of prestige attached to Pynchon's name would cross over to the film made from his novel, so at a hazard I'd say Inherent Vice was the second film referenced. Big Lebowski is clearly a comedy and derives much of its comedy from the character of The Dude, who is a stoner, so presumably it was the third film.

Not saying I agree with the assessment, since I haven't seen IV and it's been two ages or more since I saw Long Goodbye. I did enjoy Lebowski, despite not being a stoner. Go figure.

I think the last of the three is pretty far behind too, although I enjoyed it.

I've seen Lebowski a bunch of times and it has its moments, but I never understood the immense praise it receives.

It's hilarious, has great visuals, a ton of fantastic actors on top of their game, and the definitive latter day Jeff Bridges performance. What's not to like?

I think I might actually prefer California Split to The Long Goodbye these days, although I've probably just seen the latter too many times.

Long Goodbye is actually my favorite Altman by far -- I'm not a huge fan generally.

I'm an enormous Altman fan, but some of his movies are total dogshit.

What else fits in with this "stoner noir" genre?
IV and Lebowski seem to have a lot more similarities to each other than LG has to either of the later films.

Chinatown has to fit in here somehow too, it's a product of post-hippy bleakness even though it's a period piece.

Same point, aimless: Altman's career was so erratic right till the end, I think even his most ardent defenders have opinions all over the place about his work. (I'd personally rate his films from 3s and 4s up to 10s.) With Kubrick that might be true?

I've never seen it, but The Big Fix from '78 might fit into your stoner-Chandler genre.

otm. the cultural phenomenon surrounding lebowski is irritating if you pay attention, but the movie itself is wonderful.

definitely more stoner than noir - but Cheech & Chong - especially Nice Dreams and Things Are Tough All Over are shaggy-dog LA ensemble pieces that fit some where in this lineage. Cheech & Chong & Chinatown.

Stacy Keach's Sgt Stedenko in "Up In Smoke" is Bigfoot Bjornsen a few years down the line.

Yeah, the flow of Inherent Vice reminded me of Cisco Pike more than any other film

watching inherent vice for the second time and it's sooooooo good

i really liked inherent vice, but kinda wish i hadn't read the book years earlier.

can't imagine the state of confusion i'd be in lol

watched it without reading the book and its just an incredible trip

Coincidentally, the events of the book/film took place (well, began) 50 years yesterday.

I dont really rate PTAs other stuff v highly but Inherent Vice is one I could watch again and again. I thought the book would be basically unfilmable, but seeing the film for the first time I couldnt believe how faithful it was & how well it worked.

one of my favorite final scenes in any movie ever. the light scrolling across doc and shasta's faces, the dreamy nowhere of their conversation... what a beautiful final note. also was fun at this moment in time to watch a movie that's at least partially about how fucked up america is in every way

i also played a game where i smoked every time doc smoked and i got p bottomlessly stoned

the ideal state to enjoy this film, tbh

i don't smoke at all and i loved it

(never got on with big lebowski tho; long goodbye has been in my top five since the 1980s probably)
