Watching horror films alone at night - classic or dud?

Bearing in mind I almost peed out of the window just now to avoid having to leave my bedroom on a dark and stormy night, do people regularly put themselves through such terrors? And what are the best/worst films to watch for maximum effect?

What's the matter Mark - do you have a scary housemate or something?

since "alone at night" is the only state of being i seem to ever be in, it had better be classic if i feel like horror. the last film i saw like this was Ring (the original not the remake coming out this weekend). it was fun and had lots of great noises.

I was watching a video of The Ring (Japanese horror film, wherein the horror comes from a videotape) in bed just before going to sleep, and stopped because I realised it was a very very stupid thing I was doing. Only a frightening film about people being butchered in bed would be dumber

I always do it.

Never seen a horror film that really scared me (except maybe Carrie or The Exorcist when I was about 13).
Tend to avoid them like the plague unless it's one of the Evil Dead trilogy which are plain hilarious.

Definitely watch with friends to see who can out-geek the other by remembering the most catchphrases.

Not technically a horror movie, but I have never watched all of Eraserhead because I was watching it by myself at night and got creeped out by the bile-spitting premature baby. I am a wuss.

Watching "The Shining" home alone = instant poo in pants.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I've ever been scared by a horror film, other than the reactions while actually watching.

Watch out, Ex-Lax.

I never really scared by horror films. Plus I have my cat and dog to protect me from evil.

I wish it were on DVD:

so I could see if it's as creepy to watch as an adult (all I can remember is watching this when I was 7 years old, and..it definitely left an impression)

I hear Miramax is in the process of remaking it: Ugh.

i got too afraid to go to the loo after watching the 'blair witch project' even though other people thought it was crap.

The Shining failed as a horror film in that I really couldn't wait for him to kill that annoying woman.

Blair Witch Project 2 creeped me out, but this could have been due to, erm, other factors making me paranoid

Jack Nicholson's character or Stanley Kubrick?

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 17 October 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicholson's character should have killed the annoying woman quickly. I have no malice or desire for Kubrick to actually kill the actress who played her, as long as she never ever evr appeared on my screen again.

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i heart shelley duval: she plays olive oyl in popeye!! and she is a bazillion times less annoying than jack nicholson ever, so the ending was k-korrekt hurrah

only better ending: nicholson and kubrick BOTH frozen to death in the maze

unlike mark c i find still dark nights spookier than stormy ones, which i love: when i was little i read that ghosts and witches dissolved in the rain, and for some reason this handy night-terrors get-out clause works extremely well

But what about blasted heaths? (Sorry Mark, don't want to give you night terrors.) I'm with Chris V, I did watch The Shining at home alone and got so scared I phoned my Dad who was no bloody help at all and just laughed and laughed and shouted 'Heeerrre's Jonny' down the phone and reminded me that in The Shining it's the father who goes mad.

(I was also 22 at the time, so perhaps too old to be phoning for comfort.)
