Post TV-Show Support Lines

I just watched a good TV show starring the excellent Timothy Spall as Mitch. He gets sacked. His daughter announces she wants to leave home. He sees his wife blowing another guy. His mother tells him his father is dying (this is in like two days). The parents try to commit double suicide, but the father survives - though he does die soon after.

Over the closing credits, the announcer says "If you have experienced similar problems to Mitch..." and gives a support line. I burst out laughing. How many people have had that lot?

OK, it was a bit Grand Guignol, the acting at times rivalled Harrods Food Hall for quantities of ham, the ending was ripped off Midnight Cowboy (add Jules et Jim/Quadrophenia if they'd had the guts to end it with him driving off the cliff), the music was appalling, and yet...somehow it got to me. I personally found the whole mortuary/clearing the house/standing in an empty house/funeral business extremely upsetting to watch for obvious reasons, not to mention the suicide sequence for even more obvious reasons - but I didn't switch off. I would say I have the same NUMBER of problems of equal magnitude but they are different in nature and came sequentially rather than all at once (although a lot of the time it feels like the latter).

I'm suprised they don't pop a support line up every time Janine rocks up on 'Stenders. Have you been homeless, a prostitue, a coke addict, agoraphobic stalker over the last year. If so ring our Janine Butcher support line - cos we don't believe it either.

for Eastenders it should be "if you've witnessed your betrothed caught up in one of your siblings/parents knickers and require electro-shock councelling call this helpine now" and they'd have to use it EVERY miserable week
