this show is complete and utter noir-action madness & clearly the work of some sick puppies but also way better executed, written and acted than material this trashy has any right to be.

nameless ex-con poses as conveniently dead sheriff in shitsplat small Pennsylvania town in amish country that is completely overrun with weirdo criminals already. complete & utter fucking chaos ensues. it's kiiiind of in legitimately bad taste and I love it.

it's 3 seasons in, 4th season coming sometime this year. anyone down?

article contains some spoilers for the first season's overarching plot but summarizes why it's a bit more substantive than its surface might suggest http://grantland.com/features/banshee-cinemax-hbo/

Yeah have watched up to about 3rd episode of 3rd series. Watching a number of serieses or would be further.
It is a bit OTT in terms of both sexual & violent content. I have it as a d/ld so don't know its origins in terms of channel. Is it from a cable channel? I'm assuming it must be cos I'm assuming terrestrial tv would have something like a Hayes code still.

in the states it's on cinemax, no restrictions there.

my favorite show of late in terms of pure enjoyment/adrenaline rush but with quiet and strangely lyrical moments strung throughout amid all the visceral shit. and on more than one occasion literal viscera. burned through 2 and a quarter seasons of it in about a week.

nine months pass...

this is basically like a modern version of Spartacus mixed with some Sons of Anarchy and like... a history of violence? Main guy even looks similar to the main spartacus guy(s). I'm about 2/3 thought the 1st season and loving it obv. he's such a nasty fighter. i had to squint my way through that fight with the MMA dude.

obv some Justified comparisons are in order as well.

was a bit rote for this show to do a serial killer plot but they did it in as pure-batshit banshee fashion as possible

plus as lurid as it was, most network shows are way more sadistic and ultimately gross in their depiction of that shit, in the guise of law-and-order cleanliness, than most of banshee's truly hideous gore

Love banshee. Only 3 episodes into the final season. Fight scenes are incredible, and the whole thing just always seems tongo that bit further than I expect it to. I mean S1 the sweet little Amish girl hanging out in bars at the weekend ( not that unexpected) her uncle being the chief gangster of the town (p unexpected) her moving in with him and them sleeping together ( wtf what won't this show do)

Also Job is such a great character, especially the exchanges between him and Sugar. His situation in S4 ( in a cell and with a full head of hair!) I found more upsetting than the mma fight, head in a vice, hand lopped of by a machete, face chewed off by a dog madness that proceeded it.

Proctor's castrated enforcer is also top notch.

Bonkers show, and on the shallowest of notes has had probably the hottest female cast of a show ever.

i was never really clear on whether or not proctor and his niece rebecca actually screwed or if he just ogled her in that fashion

(its p gross either way obv)

They screwed

So is this definitely over?
Seemed to leave things slightly not spelt out just in case they wanted to revisit.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 15:18 (eight years ago) link

according to a podcast with the creator jonathan tropper, it is certainly over for him, because he's started work on another show. sez he wouldn't object to it continuing with someone else running it, but I doubt that would happen unless someone with money comes to cinemax and is like YO, BANSHEE BACK.

(so, basically, me if I win the lottery)

tropper said it could in theory continue infinitely bc there's so much weird shit in the town both already there and what could be added to it, which is an interesting idea. maybe doing banshee side stories in other mediums like comics would be cool

I should also say that jonathan tropper being the creator of 38 episodes' worth of pulp madness and also the writer of fucking this is where I leave you is hilarious

gonna miss this show. thx for making a thread on it cos i probs would have never heard about it otherwise

Spottie, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 16:52 (eight years ago) link

v welcome dude

i'll miss it as well. i don't know any other show that ever mixed noir and pure action and melodrama with really well-drawn, psychologically rich characters in quite the same way, and i'm not sure any ever will. (and perhaps no other creator should try, tbh.)

shows reminded me a lot of spartacus tbh.

Spottie, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 17:14 (eight years ago) link

is that worth watching? it was a starz show so i heard barely anything about it, and i'm not always down for sword-and-sandal shit (i like thrones but couldn't get into rome, for example), but my prejudgments have been wrong many times before

omg dude, yes. if you liked banshee you will like spartacus. its's even more over the top with its fighting and story telling, and sex. It's pure camp.

Spottie, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 17:33 (eight years ago) link

start it tonight
