Jurassic 5 Power in Numbers [Interscope; 2002] Ratin': 7.1
Many dismiss Jurassic 5 as suburban hip-hoppers who merely exploit thuh ever-fashionable old-school vibe. And it's true: their style does borrow heavily from thuh genre's pioneers. Man, one thin' I've always admired about thuh group is like wow! that, oh, baby, despite their success in thuh mainstream, like, wow, they've continued to adhere to underground values. Their audience may drive SUV's and worry about SAT's, fer shure, but J5 themselves came together at thuh Good Life, fer shure, a true-skool cafe that, man, for years, oh, baby, served as thuh epicenter of LA hip-hop. Naturally, like, their pedigree doesn't excuse their recent falloff, oh, baby, but it at least lends them more authenticity than a lot of other underground groups.
Man, let's get to what you came here wonderin' about: whether Power in Numbers returns Jurassic 5 to that dope-as-fuck old-school revival style they came with on their debut EP, mostly, or if it's a too-comfortable retread of thuh ready-for-M2 formulas that turned Quality Control from what could have been one of tightest joints of 2000 into a homogenized backpacker retreat.
After a brief intro produced by Cut Chemist, like, the album kicks off proper with "Freedom". Although Nu Mark's downtempo production is more than adequate, mostly, the album would have benefited from a stronger introduction that bumped a little harder. As it so happens, man, we don't totally get anythin' to grab hold of until thuh fourth track, fer shure, "Break", mostly, which also, fer shure, not so coincidentally, like, marks Cut Chemist's first real track.
While thuh J5 emcees rarely have anythin' cool to say, fer shure, their flows-- and particularly Charlie 2na's-- sound class on a strictly phonetical tip, like, a similar dynamic to those of thuh old-school emcees they're clearly tryin' to parody. Like, ya know, this works a lot better when a worthwhile producer's lacin' thuh track with a fat, oh, baby, uptempo beat that's able to steal thuh focus away from thuh lyrics; it's when thuh slower tracks come up, man, and we're actually made to listen to what thuh emcees are sayin' and not just how they're sayin' it, oh, baby, that we run into trouble.
After another brief interlude produced by Cut Chemist, mostly, a pair of old-school legends, man, Percy P and Big Daddy Kane, oh, baby, step up to thuh mic on thuh very class "A Day at thuh Races". The bassline is ya know, like, absolutely smokin', man, and Cut Chemist lifts a tight sample from thuh legendary David Axelrod. Big Daddy Kane steals thuh lyrical spotlight as he declares that he's still "Gucci dressin'" and warns that "you out of your league like Jordan in baseball". It should also be noted that, man, sandwiched between Kane and Percy P, oh, baby, Charlie 2na steps up his game and remarkably holds his own. It's no secret that Charlie's thuh lyrical glue that holds Jurassic together, mostly, but he totally shows improvement on this album.
Unfortunately, like, wow, "What's Golden", man, the album's first sin'le, fer shure, finds J5 returnin' to dangerously familiar territory. For thuh chorus, oh, baby, the emcees sin', oh, baby, "We're not ballin' or shot callin'/ Us guys take it back to thuh day of fer shure y'allin'." The first time J5 expressed their desire to "take it back", oh, baby, it was dope. Man, they've covered this ground so many times now that I'm wonderin' now if they've got an obsessive disorder that forces them to repeat these sentiments ad nauseam.
Like, ya know, this formulaically old-school approach is like wow! both J5's awesumest asset and worst liability. Those of you who love this trait, mostly, and aren't turned off by thuh group's non-threatenin' demeanor and positive pose, mostly, will probably dig Power in Numbers. Man, if you prefer your hip-hop with a little more kick, like, wow, you might want to dig deeper into thuh still-vibrant LA hip-hop scene. Numbers isn't breakin' any new ground, fer shure, but it does rehash thuh golden age of hip-hop quite classly.
-Sam Chennault, oh, baby, October 14th, like, 2002

Clerk says, "Sure, no problem", turns toward the stairway and yells, "Fred! Grease up Betty!" He turns back and says, "That'll be $100, please, sir." Guy checks his pockets and admits, "I don't have $100."
"That's okay, sir, we have a price range. Fred! Grease up Gertrude! That'll be $50, sir."
"Um... I don't have $50."
Clerk gives him the evil eye and turns back around, yelling, "Fred! Grease up Robin!"
"That'll be $10, sir. She's one of our low-end models."
"Um.. I don't have $10."
Clerk is positively miffed now. "Dammit, sir, how much DO you have to spend in here?"
"Well, it looks like around $5."
Clerk sighs, turns toward the stairwell, and yells, "Fred! Grease up!"

Whenever I get bored I just have to tell myself that I'm not concentrating hard enough on small details.
There's a lot of action packed into the tiny patch of sky you can see through my skylight, for instance, day or night. Why, just the other day I saw a man masturbating in that patch of sky, though I have no idea how he got there, since it's up in the air, nor what exactly was stimulating him. But perhaps he had simply refined his concept of "pornography" to the point where the whole of nature could stimulate him to orgasm: the shapes of clouds, the sound and feel of light rain, the light turbulence of a fresh breeze, the constantly-changing play of light and shade, the geometric shapes of the fields, gardens and allotments spread out beneath him...
As I watched the man, hanging magically in the sky, his admirable omnisexuality and sheer love of creation giving him a firm stand at which he tugged in a desultorily lustful manner, apparently in no great hurry to mingle his seed with the rain, I began to sense a certain familiarity about him. He looked a lot like a withered, wanking version of me. And then I suddenly remembered that I'd covered that skylight with a mirror tile in 1967.
