Who will win the Palme at Cannes? [2015 edition]

Nemes has worked as Bela Tarr's assistant, which is kinda promising? Gigantic YAY at finally seeing that legendary new HHH on there.

But as a Scandinavian, I decided to vote for Trier. The first Norwegian entry in... a looong time, I think.

I guess there's an entry still TBA, but the poll has never been the point of these threads anyway.

the Coen Brothers are the jury so i'll go with Sorrentino, which is the closest to them in spirit. or maybe Haynes?

I'd say the Villeneuve sounds pretty Coen-friendly.

Two female directors in competition, a female directed opening film for the first time since 87. Tiny steps in the right direction. There also aren't any obvious directors in Un Certain Regard like Jessica Hausner or Claire Denis where you go 'How on earth can you claim you choose from quality when you chose fucking Roman Polanski over her????'

it's still 4 female directors out of 30 in official selection + certain regard, that points to very little effort.

No, Polanski stunk up competition a few years back, kept better female directors out. I just don't know what female directors they missed this time, which is the first time in a couple years. Normally it's pretty clear.

Also, it's five out of thirty + the very high-profile opening slot. Better than usual. Babysteps.

Ok, apparantly Maren Ade had a new film coming. Hopefully that will be added, otherwise, that does look bad. Other snubs include Sokurov, Desplechin, Miguel Gomes and Apichatbong Weerasethakul. But a couple more will be added, and a couple might not be done in time. And a couple might be crap. Who knows?

Big names always have a leg up, and except for being meh on Carnage i think Polanski's kept the quality up lately. Of course there should be more/some women.

Cannes' taste in women is also historically dodgy.

The "big names" defense doesn't entirely hold up, tho, when Cannes' cachet makes them a potential famemaker.

They could thrust notable female directors into the limelight, instead of repeatedly inviting Naomi Kawase.

Still the Water was pretty crap. Only one of hers I've seen.

Kawase has made some pretty good films before Still The Water.

Which one is the best? Also, if the festival insists on finding room for Kore-eda, then I don't think I have a problem with Kawase.

Hopefully Alice Rorhwacher will become a regular after The Wonders won Grand Prix. Saw it yesterday and it's goooood! 2 hours of wondruous natural lightning caught on celluloid. Best penultimate shot in a long time.

isn't there usually a bunch of politics involved in just like ... The Nature Of Competition. everybody was outraged by the last Denis being in UCR rather than the main slate but it was (apparently) because she'd preferred it that way. I'm hyped for a bunch of stuff vying for the Palme but it isn't crazy that he's hanging with the art kids instead of going head to head with Michael Caine flicks.

Still the Water was bad, but I don't get what makes her significantly worse than recent Kore-eda, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa has another in competition as well despite Real being one of the craziest awful films I've ever seen.

He has won the lion, so he's not completely without wins, but his film seems awesome and also the one that needs palm-boost the most.

Indeed, by Noe's standards, especially compared to his last Enter the Void, Love is pretty innocuous, hardly shocking at all. This may seem like a surprising thing to say about a movie that features a tight close-up of a penis ejaculating into 3-D space at its audience.

Son of Saul looks incredible. I'll choose that as the winner. Favourable comparisons with Klimov's Come and See which is possibly my favourite film of all time.

Miguel Gomes' new one sounds like absolutely amazing. 6 hours, collection of vignettes, both fictional and documentary, in 35mm and 16mm, filmed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul's cinematographer. Can't wait to see it.

Iceland for the win, there. A bit of Danish money involved, so the media here is acting like we won it. Iceland is kinda winning a lot at the moment, Benedikt Erlingson's very good Of Horses and Men won the Nordic Film Prize last year, and Dagur Kari's Virgin Mountain won three prizes in Tribeca last month.

Well, he won UCR in 2002, and has won Jury Prize and Golden Palm in competition. I can understand if jury wanted to award someone new. Except that Kiyoshi Kurosawa has also won a lot of prizes, and his latest films have been pretty horribly looking, so especially a directing award seems odd. An interesting sign.

With regard to Carol my problem
Is that I feel like I've already seen the film, will know exactly how it will pan out before I've even seen it. I mean I know this is daft but I say this as a huge Todd Haynes fan.
