(I decided against polling that list because it didn't have either Inside or Martyrs but did have The Ring so screw that.)

You probably should poll it, I'm in the mood to yell at people today.

For all the weird kid movies on this list, you'd think they would've found room for Joshua.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

good list

Οὖτις, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:23 (nine years ago) link

if you hate horror movies

☂ (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:26 (nine years ago) link

I can't complain too much about a list that includes Pulse, but c'mon ...

Martyrs
The Devil's Rejects
Inside
Ils
In My Skin
Land of the Dead
[REC]
Wolf Creek
Amer
Cabin Fever
Audition
(technically '99, but still)
the Final Destination franchise

Don't even get me started on categorizing that Haneke film horror. I have the loosest, most liberal definition for the genre of anyone, but that's a laughable stretch.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:28 (nine years ago) link

Voted Mulholland Dr. because the Let the Right One In option forces me to vote for the Yankee remake (which I didn't see) as well. Bug is one that I have found surprisingly hard to shake; I liked it OK when I saw it, but I feel like it is one that might actually improve upon further viewings. I like The Host, Black Swan and 28 Days Later well enough, without ever having felt the need to revisit them. The House of the Devil is good too, but I preferred The Innkeepers. Not a big fan of Under the Skin, as I've noted elsewhere, though Orphan is the only thing on this list that I actually saw and hated.

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:32 (nine years ago) link

I haven't seen any of those except Cabin Fever tbh (haven't seen that Haneke either)

I've seen 14 of these entries and they all varied from good to great so idk

Οὖτις, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:32 (nine years ago) link

oh wait I've seen Audition

xxp

Οὖτις, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:33 (nine years ago) link

there's good films on this list, but because of those omissions and because of some willful "aren't we provocative?" genre fuckery and because of utter shit like 28 Days Later it's a bad list

out of the ones i've seen here i wd probly pick The Host

☂ (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:34 (nine years ago) link

maybe I'm just being generous cuz it puts a bunch of my favorites - Mullholand Dr, Under the Skin, Let the Right One In, the Host - near the top.

Οὖτις, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:35 (nine years ago) link

pairing the Right One movies is weird, as i think the US version is a significant improvement.

Bug has an excellent first half and then a way-too-literal circling of the drain for the last 45 mins.

Mullholand Dr is not a horror film either.

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:36 (nine years ago) link

Only three on here I actively hate (We are what we are, house of the devil, and trouble every day) but yeah missing a goldmine of other better options. If they wanted a token lunch that actually qualifies as horror in my book, inland empire would have made a hell of a lot more sense than mulholland drive.

Sorry to do this, but I like our list a lot better: http://www.slantmagazine.com/features/article/the-25-best-horror-films-of-the-aughts

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

Bonus points for no stupid ah never mind you all know what I'm going to say already.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

xps agree wholeheartedly; Inland Empire is the clear horror film of Lynch's two recent masterpieces

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:44 (nine years ago) link

I think this is better than the SF list, a few great and very good ones (Mulholland Drive, Under The Skin, Let The Right One In, Black Swan, Berberian Sound Studio), but mostly okay stuff and several I'm not interested in.
I don't think House Of The Devil and 28 Days Later are quite good enough.

It's missing Inland Empire, Haze, Amer, Strange Color Of Your Body's Tears, Martyrs, A Field In England, Pan's Labyrinth, Borderlands, Teeth and probably a few I can't remember. A few of these by directors they did feature.

Audition if Eric H is making an excuse.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

Oh god, come to think of it, I'll accept any Haneke film on this list include Amour and Code Unknown before I'll accept Pan's Labyrinth.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 11 May 2015 16:55 (nine years ago) link

There is no better monster movie than The Host, it was such a shame Bong's next big genre pic was that bloody awful Snowpiercer.

xelab, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:11 (nine years ago) link

Pan's Labyrinth - one good horror scene, and it doesn't feature Muppets

☂ (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 May 2015 17:18 (nine years ago) link

mmm token lunch

DJP, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:24 (nine years ago) link

I initially wanted to call it a "weird list", but it's really just impersonal and somewhat horror-averse. The films selected are mostly good-to-great, but the compilers were clearly more interested in corralling respectable mainstream, indie and arthouse titles than displaying any deep knowledge of or fealty to the genre. They've included few oddball deep cuts; gone relatively light on gore & sleaze; and made plenty of room for pedigreed auteurs and prestige productions. Which is fine, but not terribly interesting or useful to me, as a longtime fan.

a faded dose from rays gone by (contenderizer), Monday, 11 May 2015 17:26 (nine years ago) link

I think there are clearly a few anti-horror reps on that panel. No question.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 11 May 2015 17:27 (nine years ago) link

and yeah, the slant list is much, much better

a faded dose from rays gone by (contenderizer), Monday, 11 May 2015 17:46 (nine years ago) link

I like the list. There may be omissions but there's also not a single film from it that I watched and disliked.

daavid, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:13 (nine years ago) link

don't know what it says about me that i've voted the number one choice in the last two movie polls on ilx.

Mulholland is the scariest film I've ever seen.

p:s nerds know (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

Wait wait what the hell is "the others" doing on this list

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:35 (nine years ago) link

Keeping The Ring company in not-scary-mediocrity corner.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:36 (nine years ago) link

I think I glossed that as "the strangers" the first time around. Also, 28 weeks later is better than 28 days later. The more I look at this list the less I like it.

Did we ever poll the slant list?

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:37 (nine years ago) link

Modesty forbade.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

You have mod powers tho, right? You could easily just edit this poll with my blessing.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

Ha I think that as dudes with interestingly similar horror tastes in general, the ring is one where we strongly differ. The others is like weaksauce sixth sense bullshit though.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:39 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I can't fathom anyone having a hot second for that crazy lame Gore Verbinski movie. I allowed myself the one indulgence in the horror film poll to step out of my role as magnanimous host to chew out people who voted for that movie.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:40 (nine years ago) link

Mods can't edit polls, sadly. I might poll it after this closes though, because why not always be talking about horror.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:40 (nine years ago) link

Let The Right One In is my favourite of the ones I've seen. I liked it enough that I also read the novel and sequel short story.

jmm, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 16:46 (nine years ago) link

I liked It Follows but I didn't think it really worked as a horror movie at all

voted Trouble Every Day

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:06 (nine years ago) link

The Others is better than The Ring IMO. The Ring starts well but gets pretty dull towards the end. The Others was a neat take on the Turn Of The Screw premise with excellent acting, and yeah, the ending was a bit of a let down, but it was still excellently done.

is MH drive really a horror?

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:35 (nine years ago) link

house of the devil is cool but the inkeepers was better/scarier

voted let the right one in

It's definitely debatable but I've never watched anything quite so intangibly frightening before. Sat looking through the gaps between my fingers p much from the moment the man behind the dumpster appears. Never have corridors and blind corners been so scary.

p:s nerds know (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:46 (nine years ago) link

voted Kill List, which if you haven't seen...

it me, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:49 (nine years ago) link

yeah Wheatley/Jump are my fave team at the moment - would've been happy to see A Field in England on here but Kill List is def the more "horror"y

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

Also missing The Children, Eden Lake, The Strangers. Voting Kill List.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

I liked the Strangers a lot until the last 10 minutes, when it just sort of ... ends. couldn't vote for it for that reason

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link

should have voted for the babadook actually.

also not sure if under the skin should be here.

i thought unfriended, paranormal activity: the marked ones and the french film cavalaire were pretty great modern horror, and far better than overrated things like it follows.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 16:00 (nine years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Saw It Follows last night. Liked it, although not the scariest thing ever. Didn't understand why someone wouldn't just up sticks and move far, far away though.
