Even the woman i know who thinks the CIA is running al-Shabaab doesn't think Bush did 9/11.

im always disappointed by alternate explanations of 9.11 they lack the poetic reach of really interesting conspiracies. like its always just 'these people/person i dislike was responsible' theres no occult or fantastic implications. pretty lame\\

voted 'i believe in a different insane conspiracy...' for those reasons. gonna cook something up hot enough to melt steel for myself to believe in, probably involve the eternal war btw netzach and hod

I hate Bush and certainly think he was incompetent and that his administration used 9/11 as an excuse to go invade Iraq on false premises but in no way do I think they actually orchestrated and/or knew that this was going to happen, that is dumb.

have always felt that 9/11 skeptics would be better off looking at the long history of al qaeda's rise and the cia's alleged role in arming them in the '80s, but that's not as much fun to talk about as the "jet fuel can't melt steel" blah blah business. (this is also true of the JFK case, where most ppl tend to focus on the unsolvable "who shot from where" business instead of the evidence of oswald's intelligence connections.)

the dumber conspiracy stuff also serves as a pretty annoying distraction from the fact that bush et al had plenty of reason to anticipate an al qaeda attack and didn't prevent it, which is kind of a major scandal in and of itself even if you assume no ill intent.

this is not a conspiracy tho. a conspiracy imo requires the accusation of malicious conspiracy. the cia didn't arm/train the mujahideen bc they wanted to prep them to fly planes into the twin towers two decades later.

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 21:28 (nine years ago) link

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 21:29 (nine years ago) link

there are subtle variations on the obama is a muslim conspiracy theory too. a. obama is actually a secret muslim secret agent, b. obama's formative years were influenced by being raised in an islamic environment, c. obama subscribes to a colonial philosophy that makes him sympathetic to muslims

these posts pretty much sum it up for me

u know what's funny is that i always assumed that the CIA supporting the foreign mujahideen was universally agreed upon but now that i read a little bit there are pretty compelling reasons why that might not be true

which of these is the Jadakiss position?

ultimate american sock (mh), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 21:42 (nine years ago) link

Of course it's true. They made Charlie Wilson's War about it. Would they have made that film if it wasn't true?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 21:43 (nine years ago) link

Also, it's pretty awesome that there is a conspiracy theory which ends up with Obama being 'sympathetic to muslims'. Because anything other than blind hate is obviously suspicious.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

afaict, having never seen the flick, that's what d'souza's movie was about

Oh, it sounds perfectly plausible to me.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 21:50 (nine years ago) link

there's more to it obv if it was just he's sympathetic to muslims it wouldn't be a conspiracy theory. it's about how that anticolonialism background generates his attempts to reshape america

x-posts, and has been forgotten, but the west def collaborated with the mujahedeen. This is a picture of Lars Løkke Rasmussen, former and unfortunately probably future Danish prime minister:

def w/ the indigenous mujahedeen, unclear whether w/ afghan arabs or bin laden - obv i don't know either way

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 23:57 (nine years ago) link

Kernel of truth, but never underestimate conspiracy theorists to take it way too far. I find it hard to believe if the CIA managed to deliver all the weapon and training without anything later being used against the west, but have also always heard it as indigenous mujahedeen.

'And my brothers and sister are there, my wife Laura's there.

'And I'm sitting next to a beautiful woman, friend of mother and dad's. And I said to her out loud "what is sex like after 50?".'
