Can You Tell How Old a Person Is Just By Reading Their Posts?

I'm curious. Can you? I know the ages (at least approximately) of a few of the UK posters, but I'd imagine if I guessed the ages of some of you I'd get it badly wrong.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think you can. How old am I?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I place most ILX-ers in that grey area between 25 and 45, and beyond that, don't really think about it.

Jody Beth Rosen, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

nope. i'm completely in the dark about everyone's age. except mine. so how old am i?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

greg you are around 22?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

ha. you're good. i'm 23.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

In terms of maturity, I am about 8.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I am 21 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH......WHOOOOOAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...........OOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooOOOOOOOahhhWAHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

gazza, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting. Ned once asked me if I saw Mercury Rev live in their Yerself is Steam days, and I was like "I was ten, Ned." I always thought Graham would have been in his early 30's, but Ronan put me straight. So the answer is no. Actually, I've always been quite curious as to the gender of some people. Some of the names don't have male or female connotations for me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I turned 20 in July btw.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I was caught out on this last night - I thought Chaki was really young but he's not apparently.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i wanna know how jel guessed. it's eating away at me now. especially after "i don't think you can".

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

you can tell if you're on ILM. the taste in music DO YOU SEE?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

how do you explain anna rose, julio?

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I pick jel as being between 22 and 25

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure most regulars here have made enough references to their age for this to be spoiled as a game.

I did used to think Graham was in his thirties. I think it's because I didn't think people were called Graham anymore.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

but julio listens to old man music!

bob zemko (bob), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(as do i)

bob zemko (bob), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i am 99! and i won't go down...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I am obselete.

Graham 3000 (graham), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick Momus is (CENSORED).

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

nope. i would guess mark s to be younger than he is and nitsuh to be older. ronan and ned i'd get right though.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned once asked me if I saw Mercury Rev live in their Yerself is Steam days, and I was like "I was ten, Ned."

Hey, you still could have seen them. Didn't you hear about the Finsbury Park show in 1992 where they had a bunch of young schoolkids dressed in bee costumes beating on drums?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't even tell how old a person is when I'm looking at them. I am crap at that stuff.

Nick A., Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

greg, I figured you were past uni, but not by that much, so that's how I got to 22ish.

(btw i'm 26)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I felt the same way, Nick - at least, I was surprised that someone so young was called Graham.

I always imagine that I sometimes come over older than I am, and other times I come over younger. It varies.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Persons? I thought you were all just monkeys at typewriters, like me.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep mentioning my age (43). I find it sort of amusing to be so much older than most (at 43). There are a few close to my age (Mark S, Doc C, Marcello are within 5 years of me), but I have been to at least one ILE-related event where no one was within 10 years of my age (no one over 32).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Do me, go, go, do me, do me.

david h (david h), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

21?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

david h is 22 too.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I actually knew them in person & I STILL got all the Dunedin krew's ages wrong!
(ps : how old am I eh eh eh?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 17 October 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham used to think I was sixteen.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 17 October 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ess Kay are you like twenty-one or something?

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 17 October 2002 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

when 900 years old you be, smell as good you will not

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 17 October 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

wait, i went to uni? so why am i so stoopid?

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 17 October 2002 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm 25, which puts me neatly in that dreaded "high school=Nirvana" demographic. I guessed - like some others, I suppose - that everyone else is in their thirties (except for Daniel_Rf, who I already knew was a teenager and that continues to blow my mind - when I was his age my rockcrit sense boiled down to "Hendrix is an awesome guitar player and I like the beats on this BDP album").

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

(As opposed to now when they boil down to "Eddie Hazel is an awesome guitar player and I like the beats on this El-P album", ha ha)

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm chronologically closer than some of those you mentioned, Martin.

I can't decide whether being mistaken for younger would have been Classic or Dud -
Classic because of perceived bright-eyed bushy-tailed enthusiastic open-mindedness and a lack of taste-frozen crustacean curmudgeonisationalism?
Or Dud because you must not be displaying the relative wisdom, maturity and sophisticashun that age is supposed to bring?

Feh, be off with you, young whippersnappers, before I fetch the blunderbuss.....

Ray M (rdmanston), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I guessed 24 for Starry. This was an error, though not a grievous one.

I would have guessed much older for Mark S except that he used to be editor of Wire. Was he born an old man and grown younger?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

...would have guessed much YOUNGER for Mark S....

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S is only a little younger than I am.

Ray, I assume that the fact that I mostly hang about with people younger than me has more to do with immaturity than anything else. I'm perfectly happy with this, in that I can internally define maturity as having children and wearing things called 'slacks' and doing nothing more exciting than going to IKEA or garden centres, so I am happy to be immature.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm 16 forever

bryan adams (doorag), Saturday, 19 October 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That's 16 'til you DIE. Big difference.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 19 October 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

im 38. i know i dont sound it at times by my posts, but hey who cares.
i have children ( well, one child, well a baby actually hahaha ) but i dont wear slacks!!!
i figured most of you to be between about 20 to 3o something. can tell the uni students and the 'oldies' like martin ( kidding martin ) but it can be tricky sometimes to tell with some of you.

donna (donna), Saturday, 19 October 2002 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"I have children but I don't wear slacks!" would be a great rap lyric.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 19 October 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Go on, how old am I, you cunts!

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 19 October 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Same goes for me!

Ashley Andel, Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew is clearly 31. Ashley is 17, will be 18 next Wednesday.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm an ancient thirty-something, but it's hanging out here with all you students wot keeps me young

C J (C J), Saturday, 19 October 2002 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary is like 'Graham' - it's not a young person's name. Unless it has 'Beth' after it or something.

Surely you mean Mary Kate. But not Ashley.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 20 October 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary an old name! Who knew? It used to be Mary Ann but I nipped that in the bud around the 3rd or 4th grade; already tending toward maturity!

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

if you were mary ann we'd like you more because we'd be unable to get images of that hot panted harlot out of our heads.

i'm, of course, 900.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I've really gone about the Ilx thing the wrong way...no fake persona (Cleo Birdwell, anyone?), admitting to my real age, where is the intrigue?!

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i don't know anything about you, so you're doing alright so far.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

But are you intrigued?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

eh.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Good point, Mary.

Okay, I'm actually a 15 year old girl from China named Lin. (I have a feeling that having met about thirty ILXers might make this a hard switch to carry off.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why having a name like "C J" is so very mysterious. Nobody knows whether I am male or female even.

C J (C J), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, we do.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, spit!

C J (C J), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I am actually David Bowie. My nuttiest persona yet!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't be silly, Ned

C J (C J), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Ned, you were rubbish on Later With Jools Holland yesterday.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I rise above these critical remarks by noting that I have nothing left to prove. Now if you excuse me, I need to work with some of those hot young gar-id-gee producers. That is what Mike Skinner is, isn't he?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

how old am i?

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

twee and a half

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

better that than threemo

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

My name reeks of teen angst. How old am I?

Mandee, Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I just assume everyone on this board is older than I am. And I do believe everyone is.

liz! (liz!), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Liz! is only three weeks old?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

More like 17 years, but three weeks old is close enough!

liz! (liz!), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I think mandee is 24!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I am in my twenty-teens.

ragnfild (ragnfild), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ehh, pretty close there, Jel. I'm 22.

Mandee, Sunday, 20 October 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

tom, i just turned 22

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 20 October 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki that aint young

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt say it was.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh burn

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

?

chaki (chaki), Monday, 21 October 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

22 is so young! As is 30, when the 30 yr old in question is...me...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:26 (twenty-three years ago)

no one is disputing my 900, which makes me happy and sad.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

nobody believes you. perhaps if your melon-head was a little more withered...

rainy (rainy), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

. . . we could carve it into a jack-o-lantern

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I just assume everyone on this board is older than I am. And I do believe everyone is.
I am 14.

Livvie, Monday, 21 October 2002 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

jess you are 25.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm 13 years old.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I read in the Minerva section of the BMJ about some professor of Gerontology, who claims that nothing in the body is designed to bring about ageing. It's all to to with environmental factors. (must read the original article)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

having just read the quoted article, it seems that his arguement isn't quite as outlined as above. Some interesting points about cell regeneration and societal attitudes to ageing.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

William Burroughs thought that heroin use was the big anti-ager...Hmm...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm hoping that it's actually coffee and diet pepsi.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

So Mary, that'll be why William Burroughs and Keef always look so much younger and fresher than, say, Cliff Richard (obviously I am guessing that cliff is not a big heroin user)?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've heard Debbie Harry say similar things about heroin.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, and why Lou Reed looks like a spring chicken! I think in Junky WB proves categorically how heroin helps along the anti-aging process, well, he *is* still alive, isn't he?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel so immature now--I am 20, but why do I seem younger?

Ashley Andel, Monday, 21 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh, I got told yesterday in One Of Them ILX Chats that I got mentioned on this thread, and vain bastard that I am had to check that out- so I'd just like to give mad props to El Hipster Detritus.

Liz: I'm 17 too, but will be 18 by January, so you might still have the title of ILE's Youngest.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 21 October 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

jel that's very close!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 October 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a palindromic age, as I was eleven years ago.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i am prime!

Jeff W (Jeff W), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

haha me too - it hadn't occurred to me that at 43 I could claim to be in my prime.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)
