here's where you can vent about their slackness in not repaying it yet even tho is well overdue

my friend who (was) also my boss type person owes me £1300 and i need it back for a deposit on a flat, the slag! to make matters worse he's gone AWOL and ill which hardly fills me with confidence...i wouldnt have lent him it if i'd know it would be all this grief 3 months later, grrrr

Haha no comment!

Go round to his house, get him out of his deathbed and escort him to the cash machine!

It's strangely timely that you should post this. A mate of mine recently did a TEFL course and buggered off to Spain to try and get work. I'm now getting texts from her asking me to put money in her bank account coz she's "desperate". I dunno what to do, I seem to only hear from her when she wants something and if I put money into her account how will she return it? What if she dosn't get a job? On the other hand I hate to think of her alone in another country with nobody else to ask.

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Sod off Tom - I actually brought the money home the other day, it wasn't my fault you weren't in and I was forced to go and spend it on black russians.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck that, she made her own decision - its unfair to expect you to bail her out all the time, i thought thats what parents were for...not that my parents are equipped for bailing out themselves. dont be a sucker like me Plinky!

blueski, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

About two years ago I lent a mate a medium-sized amount of money to pay off some very nasty people who he owed it to. Have I heard a whimper from him about it since? Have I shite...

Of course, I got my own back from "borrowing" a slightly bigger sum of money from him not long ago, which I have no intention whatsoever of paying back, because I'm a bastard.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm owed £1800 from one of my mates. It was a choice between:

a) me giving him an £1800 loan, or
b) me having to go and visit him in Chelmsford nick.

He is paying it off (I got £140 last night), but far too slowly for my liking. Unfortunately, the amount of money I lent him now means that I can't afford someone to go round and kneecap him for me. Oh well.

lol p xx, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

man, i ditched this 'friend' of mine after he stiffed me for like 20 quid. even screamed the C word at the motherfucker. are you all rich or something? how can you lend anyone over a grand?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck this, i'm ditching all my friends tonight. £1800???? shit!!

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Starry didnt mean to be sarky - its ok anyway i've not even worked out how much it is and I know you'll pay eventually, thats why I didnt NAME AND SHAME you in my post :)

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank blueski, I was thinking of just putting like £20 in her account to ease my conscience and make sure she doesn't starve or anything but I think I'm still gonna feel guilty - she has that effect.

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

too many friends
too much money
feel v. foolish sometimes

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i sympathise Plinky but there's only so much you can help 'em - especially if its hard to tell how truthful they're being...your friend may well be hard up and out of luck on the Costa Del Bom but you've only got her word to take for that right?

blueski, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, I s'pose. I've just been to the bank - I put in £30, I don't really need that new top to wear on my b'day and I'd have felt bad thinking of her alone and hungry while I'm out for my b'day meal in new clothes. I did ask her what she'd have done if I'd said no, she said she's no idea! Going all that way without enough money is just plain dumb.

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

so what is the definition of 'way overdue'? What seems to happen is that people feel there is a staute of limitations after which their debt to you evaporates. That seems to be the case with most of the people who owe me money.

(that said, a friend recently voluntarily paid me back money she'd borrowed 5 years ago and which I'd written off)

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i am happy to lend people money if i have it to spare and they genuinely need it...i just hate this situation where at the moment i dont even know if this friend of mine has it or cares whether i need it - previous form suggests they would care and would endeavour to avoid tension between us if possible, which makes their current behaviour (total lack of contact and action) all the more mystifying

meanwhile i say hello to another old friend - meester overdraaaft

blueski, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I loaned a friend about $700 (and we have written and signed agreements about this) to help her pay her rent...and she got evicted anyways.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Sara owes me £1.26.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I owe £70 for phone bill, to boyfriend.

But friend with art mag owes me £150 for two reviews, and will not get the copy he's assigned me until he COUGHS UP.

Freelance journalism is pants sometimes, there's only one title that's ever paid me on time in a consistent way. It angers me when, at lean times of the month, I accrue so many bank charges because of late fuckers I sometimes feel like I should invoice late-payers for reimbursement as is *impossible* to budget when people are flakey.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Loaned a friend £500 when I was flush with a £15k redundancy pay-off. She said she'd pay it back as soon as HER redundancy came through (she was getting £40k+).
She's had her money for 6 months but no sign of my dosh. Meanwhile, a total of 11 months have passed since lending her the money and I'm now skint.

I'll have to call it in but I think there will be all sorts of delay tactics because she's a tightwad.

Android (Android Elvis), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think anyone owes me money and I'm sure I don't owe any! yay!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

A very much not friend owes me $600 -- however, the knowledge that no friend of his is a friend anymore, that he has nowhere to stay and that his own family regard him as a piece of crap is perversely satisfying to the unbridled evil that is my soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister owes me $8000 which I will never see.

Another friend owes me $1000, another $2000 (to get him out of jail, no less), and yet another friend's parents owe me $1200... Apparently, I'm a soft touch, so if y'all need money, you know who to ask.

luna.c (luna.c), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad owes me 750 euro.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

My boyfriend owes me money, but he set up a monthly direct debit to pay it back in installments. Sorry for being sensible.

I should point out that I do trust bf, utterly.

Madchen, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i owe a friend $150.

oy, i owe my parents so much ...

maura (maura), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

My boyfriend owes me money, but he set up a monthly direct debit to pay it back in installments. Sorry for being sensible.

Don't apologize for that. I would like my friend to pay me on an installment system (this was a part of our written agreements, but the schedule has slipped hopelessly). For Christmas (shortly after the eviction) I gave her a book on personal budgeting and finance, but have no idea if she's even read it.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i have loaned money when i have been able, and some of it has never been seen again or even mentioned. it is this that brings out peoples true colours in regards to ethics / money / friends.
i owe friends money at the moment, and am in no position to repay but i do endeavour to keep the topic happening now and then, to let them know i havent forgotten and it will be repaid. the loans to me were given with the understanding that my repayment ablitity was restricted for some time, but i still have it all nagging at me daily and cant wait to get the debts out of the way.

donna (donna), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I owe Signor Passantino a fiver, I think.
