Antique Car: Get your specialty plate and hit the car show circuit, Class of 1990

Inspired by the 1990-91-ish Plymouth Laser posing with Surm in this month's WDYLL and the now years-long trend of cars being, IMO, generally uglier and more homogenous and plastic and etc., and, in light of all this, the increasing ridiculousness of (in the U.S. at least) "Antique Car" specialized plates available to cars of certain vintages, I wanted to take a look at the cars of the Class of 1990 that would, under Arkansas statute, be eligible for the Antique Car plate.

Here's a handy list!

Arkansas eligibility standards:

"For historical or special interest vehicles or any vehicle that is twenty five (25) years old or older, which is essentially unaltered from the original manufacturers specifications"

Will you get invited to ride in the parade in your 1990 Mercury Sable wagon?

There's someone in my neighborhood who drives around in a rustbucket 84-85 plymouth voyager with historic plates.

Is the Antique Car thing over?

I think the main thing in Arkansas is that if it's over 25 years old, you can get that plate and then no longer have to continue paying annual property tax on your vehicle. You've done your part.

andrew m., Thursday, 4 June 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

I guess there will always be people who want to make a 84-85 Plymouth Voyager shine and hum like the day it was born.

andrew m., Thursday, 4 June 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

Not mine. I drove the '82 Corolla Tercel (babe repellant) during this era.

Bound to be a British equivalent to the Antique Plate thing, right?

But what about more recent, shit "antiques"?

andrew m., Thursday, 4 June 2015 18:50 (ten years ago)

two weeks pass...

Nice one. Saw one of these Toyota babies with antique plates a couple of days ago around here:

andrew m., Monday, 22 June 2015 20:48 (ten years ago)

i LOVE that. Toyota knew how to make a big car back in the day.

surm, Monday, 22 June 2015 21:09 (ten years ago)

As a child, I had a Majorette die-cast toy of a Toyota van like that. All metal except for the interior stuff and the wheels. Hot Wheels size, but heavy enough to crack a window if thrown hard enough. Had a opening rear hatch too.

Oh man I forgot how many Berettas were on the road back then. So many. And probably haven't seen a running one in 15 years.

andrew m., Tuesday, 23 June 2015 21:20 (ten years ago)

whoa man, dylan bringin' it. those 2 cars that you had - the first one reminds me of a beautiful gold Saturn sitting on my street. and the second - the red car - that's pretty hot.

but that Prelude fuckin' takes the cake.

dylannn, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 08:34 (ten years ago)

foxbody mustang prob one real classic of the time? still seen in showroom condition and still torn up by kids that find them for cheap. still cheapest easiest to make fastest car available and all of the dsms are in the junkyward

i mean classic only considering domestic manufacturers. because there are still plenty of civics and preludes and 200sxs carefully preserved all over north america.

around this year my dad had a 1990 mazda mx6 gt turbo which in my memory was actually badged as a 626 but was a coupe. all digital display. i remember the speedometer with great big digital numbers in sickly orange, the spooling turbo icon. it had four wheel steering like a skyline. a little button to set suspension mode to sport. sunroof. tape deck. white with red pinstripe down the side. alloy rims.

i can't find a picture of anything exact but a bit like this:

because of the 25 year ban on import most of the jdm cars in north america fit into this category

dylannn, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 20:46 (ten years ago)

my point is 1990 had some cool cars and i don't mind antique plates on them even if since of the plates are on plymouthplymouth voyagers

wait so am i allowed to talk about just like general vintagey cars here or is that another thread

...cuz i saw this car on The Americans that i like, want. to eat. or drive. or something.

surm, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 21:23 (ten years ago)

I know thread title says 1990, but the bigger point was to be like "wow that car could get antique tags?!" and general vintage car entertainment.

andrew m., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)

Always like the shape of those Reattas.

andrew m., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

andrew m., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

Just got curious what Reatta meant. Apparently it means a Buick manufactured from 1988-1991.

andrew m., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)

I would absolutely get antique plates for a Lagonda if I was insane enough to own one.
