Which is the best movie aspect ratio?

Inspired by Morbs use of the term "Academy ratio" as an implicit endorsement in the Joel McCrea thread. Leaving out some of the super extreme wide options like the Disney 360-degree aspect ratio and the Gance Napoleon Polyvision ratio.

i do think 1.78+ signifies that it's a movie and therefore ~serious~ and 1.33 is TV-ish

, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 18:14 (ten years ago)

Major fondness for 1.19:1 in Murnau and Lang's hands.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 18:15 (ten years ago)

tbh I watched that Spielberg made-for-tv movie he did at the beginning of his career and stopped noticing it wasn't in a "movie" aspect ratio about ten minutes in

Upright Mammal (mh), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 18:18 (ten years ago)

龜, you need to see more ~serious~ '30s films

niels, Monday, 13 July 2015 12:54 (ten years ago)

nv I realise this and I love 4:3 for this reason but still surprised by results - wonder if mono would beat out stereo in a similar poll? (wld prb beat binaural and 7.2 etc.) so many great records in mono and there are drawbacks to stereo, but stereo has become the standard format in music like widescreen has become in cinema - even if it was a marketing gimmick at the time (50s?) to me widescreen is the "default" cinema mode, and it does seem you can do a bit more with it doesn't it?

niels, Monday, 13 July 2015 13:28 (ten years ago)

I mean voting 4:3 because many great movies are in that format seems a bit like voting mono because West End Blues is mono (even though the aspect ratio is probably more crucial in Casablanca than the sound format on the Hot 5s...)

I was just surprised I guess figured it would be showdown between different wide formats

niels, Monday, 13 July 2015 13:37 (ten years ago)

Morbs was right inasmuch as they're just tools dependent on the skill of the user, but given that 10 people were bothered i'm not surprised that 4/10 wd vote for Academy

Actually my most popular poll topic in many moons.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 13 July 2015 14:23 (ten years ago)

really the old-person move is associating 4:3 with tv

difficult listening hour, Monday, 13 July 2015 18:19 (ten years ago)

i voted academy because i prefer it; i prefer the feeling of looking through the neat little window onto a dream to the sensation of being embraced by an entertainment experience; it feels closer to the nickelodeon than widescreen does and thus gives me a lil twinge of history; it has all the best movies obv; and it reminds me less of watching tv than Prestige Widescreen does

Crawling From The Blecchage (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 13 July 2015 18:39 (ten years ago)

Anyway if poll was b&w vs. color would vote the former for basically the same reason

Crawling From The Blecchage (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 13 July 2015 18:42 (ten years ago)

mono vs stereo would have a much larger turnout and stereo might carry it because of the sense of its being "default" but if anything i know more mono partisans than 1.33:1 ones; never seen a BACK TO ACADEMY pin
