Is there anything worse?
― Treeship, Monday, 20 July 2015 19:40 (ten years ago)
do you mean minimum payments, or holding a minimum number of cards, say 12?
― skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:43 (ten years ago)
surely you mean minima
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:44 (ten years ago)
(assuming you have an income) just use the credit card to pay for everything, link up your bank card to automatically pay the balance each month, voila good credit and not having to worry about minimums/a
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:45 (ten years ago)
are you talking about like getting take-out food and you need to spend at least $10 when paying with a credit card?
― marcos, Monday, 20 July 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)
^I think this is what he's talking about
― an asteroid could hit the planet (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:51 (ten years ago)
From the point of view of a store, people who pay for things that cost $1.99 on a credit card are way worse.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:55 (ten years ago)
I thought that practice was illegal.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 20 July 2015 19:58 (ten years ago)
Yeah I want to get a refill of coffee but there's a 5 dollar minimum. I don't want to get another slice of blueberry pie just to make the minimum.
― Treeship, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:00 (ten years ago)
dealing with cash is annoying but enough places require it that i pretty much always carry cash around
― marcos, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)
Yeah I need to get in the habit. I came here thinking I had a 10 but it's in my other jeans
― Treeship, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:03 (ten years ago)
Might get gum at rite aid and get cash back. Such a paaaaaain.
― Treeship, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:04 (ten years ago)
I'd take advantage of this excuse to get seconds of blueberry pie.

― Lee626, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:42 (ten years ago)
What pissed me off today was the 3% booking charge I got for paying for my kid's season ticket by card. The clerk at the ticket office said no charge if you pay cash and the cash machine was only a few minutes away but I am wary about taking 220 out of a cash machine so these rapacious fuckers got their 3%.
― xelab, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:50 (ten years ago)
blame the credit card processing companies
― sarahell, Monday, 20 July 2015 21:54 (ten years ago)
I know... I just felt like having a moan. But these fuckers are thieves. In the Uk you you can use your card in a Poundland or Greggs for a single purchase (I did one for £1.10 the other day) but for a £219 transaction suddenly these corrupt motherfuckers are after a 3% shakedown.
― xelab, Monday, 20 July 2015 23:39 (ten years ago)
someone wanted to buy a roll ($1) with a credit card today.i told him no.
― ian, Monday, 20 July 2015 23:43 (ten years ago)
I can understand the necessity of small business to do that and will always use cash on the rare occasions I actually encounter small business where I live. have to to say though there isn't a lot of it .
― xelab, Monday, 20 July 2015 23:46 (ten years ago)
oh ticket agencies with their booking charges etc. are worth moaning about ... i forget which one it is that charges a "convenience fee" for paying by cc and getting your tickets electronically which is probably the most convenient type of transaction for THEM, so they charge YOU extra?
― sarahell, Monday, 20 July 2015 23:50 (ten years ago)
I will literally go as far out of my way as possible to avoid paying ticket service charges. This includes going to the Tenderloin on midday on Sunday.
― One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:05 (ten years ago)
well, it would cost me at least $5 to go to the Tenderloin on midday on Sunday, so I guess paying the ticket service charges, as long as they are $5 or less is the most prudent choice?
― sarahell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:14 (ten years ago)
It's very annoying. Credit card processing fees are just the cost of doing business. Raise your prices if you want to make it up. Take my damn card.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:22 (ten years ago)
Yes if you are in EB probably not financially prudent protest, but I bought a bunch of Regency tickets last month and online service charge was over thirty dollars more which I really don't get. It costs money to maintain a box office. Why drive any business there?
― One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:24 (ten years ago)
idk i feel like there is a sense of entitlement to ppl who can't be bothered to have at least 10 bucks in cash on them when going out, like i feel like these are "not my ppl"
― sarahell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:27 (ten years ago)
i think there's also a class implication to people that don't have/carry cash that makes me lack sympathy for their plight when faced with a very reasonable $5 or $10 credit card minimum at a store or bar.
― sarahell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:29 (ten years ago)
The corner store that won't take your card for a $.89 soda can't raise prices to compensate - unless you'll pay $1.99 for a can of coke without complaining.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:32 (ten years ago)
I don't even look at prices!
― Jeff, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:33 (ten years ago)
maybe... but it's also about avoiding ATM fees
― Treeship, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:40 (ten years ago)
i used to try to keep some cash on me all the time because i often visited cash-only places and independent places with card-related minimums, AND because i wanted to be able to tip ppl w/o any 'signing in a tip on the receipt' shenanigans, but since i've been running on two+ years now of being hella poor, with no need to use cash anywhere i go, it's started to seem pretty pointless to even hold any cash.
― j., Tuesday, 21 July 2015 01:30 (ten years ago)
pro tip, most places w/ a credit card minimum will take a debit card instead since there's no associated transaction fee
― 龜, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 01:37 (ten years ago)
ARCO will still fee you
― an asteroid could hit the planet (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:00 (ten years ago)
It depends on the service (s) they use to process cards.
― sarahell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:15 (ten years ago)
It's very annoying. Credit card processing fees are just the cost of doing business. Raise your prices if you want to make it up.
That's what they're doing, except that they're also offering you a discount for using cash. Is the point that you want them to get rid of the discount and charge everyone the higher price?
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:24 (ten years ago)
Yes
― Jeff, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:27 (ten years ago)
As a guy who always has some cash in his pocket, I reject your proposal.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:37 (ten years ago)
wait, what are we talking about? a credit card minimum, "you can't use your card unless you buy $10 worth of stuff" isn't giving anyone a discount. the credit card fees that gas stations charge, including the 45 cent debit card fee that ARCO charges, and the discounted rates for paying in cash, is a separate thing.
― sarahell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:59 (ten years ago)
I heard that the card user gets charged 28c per transaction by the bank every time they use a debit card. Not sure about credit card. For ages I was being paid through the bank so it was easier to use a debit card. Not sure if I heard the 28c thing or had pay arrangements changed first. Could be much easier to use a card of one type when not carrying cash. But less likely to be keeping track of amount spent while doing so or how it accumulated.
