So hashtags started, as far as I'm aware, as a useful way of threading together conversations on a specific topic on popular microblogging social media platform twitter. "Let's get a hashtag for our conference so we can all tweet and share about it!" etc.

But now hashtags are... fucking everywhere, and meaningless, and passive-aggressive. Document uses of #hashtags that make you want to kill in this thread.

There is one particular person I am connected with on social media whose use of #hashtags basically makes me want to exterminate life on earth.

Kind of baffled there hasn't been a thread on #hashtags before, because they really do feel like they're everywhere now. Also I have to explain what they are to colleagues or parents at least once a month. Last time I had to explain #hashtags to my mum she responded by saying, with genuine but melodramatic exasperation, "oh god, why do people just keep inventing things the whole time?" which i thought was, you know, a but #reductive and #conservative and also #old of her.

i always found this loathsome and thought it would make using twitter loathsome but turns out none of the people i follow ever do it #problemsolved
