This was a genuine surprise. I know she's been off the telly for a few years but at that point she seemed so robust and energetic and full of humour for her age. RIP. She's a legend isn't she?

few decent tunes, many crap tv shows, by all accounts a horrible woman

Massive tory
― JLB Credit (Jack BS), Monday, 3 August 2015 09:14 (ten years ago)
I never liked her voice much. Too overwrought. Burt should have got someone else to sing "Alfie". At least she was a Tory.
― Freedom, Monday, 3 August 2015 09:58 (ten years ago)
Give her a break she was working-class.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 3 August 2015 10:08 (ten years ago)
Also she entertained millions on Saturday night ITV. I know that doesn't sit well with all of the 'I don't watch TV only HBO box sets and iPLayer on a laptop' vermin.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 3 August 2015 10:11 (ten years ago)
I thought she was politically promiscuous?
― quixotic yet visceral (Bob Six), Monday, 3 August 2015 10:11 (ten years ago)
someone on FB mentioned she had a lot of dodgy connections and he expected there'd be a lot of worms coming out the woodwork soon, but i didn't know what he was talking about.

^assuming they mean her many many friendships within the perv wing of the light entertainment industry...

btw on the US prints of Alfie, Cher sings the theme

"Give her a break she was working-class."
Was this a response to my comments about her voice, or the general comments about her being a Tory? In either case, it's rather strange.

Every famous person in Liverpool has dodgy underground connections, right?

Yup - didn't really know her as a pop star (and no real reason to begin doing so). This is p/good.

I think I saw this on an old ILX thread a while back. It's sort of charming, especially with the sound off

Just remembered how Cilla Black used to eat oranges with Oxo cubes rubbed onto them as a snack. Absolutely unhinged pic.twitter.com/F2g4mpkVjz— Steven Bonaventure x (@absolutegazelle) April 4, 2026

I know they both come from the same town so I shouldn't be surprised, but I still was a bit taken aback at how much her speech pattern resembles that of Paul McCartney.

Professional Scousers.
― Clarinet Cop (Tom D.), Saturday, 4 April 2026 22:06 (one week ago)
I was watching that One Hand Clapping film the other night and McCartney barely had a Scouse accent in it and Cilla doesn't have much of one here either.

Not just the same town but the same part of town, IIRC. My grandparents, especially my grandmother had the same cadences. My dad went to quarry bank about 10 years after John and paul but lost his accent after moving south.

There's a story Macca tells at the 7:30 mark in Man on the Run which has the same beats as Cilla's OXO. Not to be confused with Celebes Ox.

'I felt very depressed. So I said "Well, I'll just have a wee dram of Scotch. Why not? I might have another one. I've got nowhere to go."
