So I can know what I did wrong.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 17 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently if your name is Nick, and you say to an Arab person that your name is Nick, in Arabic, it sounds unbelievably rude.

Fortunately my name is not Nick.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

There's only one way of testing this obviously.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

haha Momus to United Arab Emirates!! status quo be damned!!

jones (actual), Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Sew a Canadian flag patch to their burqas to try and avoid "trouble."

Nick A., Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

even wearing a burqa would make you look stupid, as they're an Afghan thing, and you'd be really nicking with geography if you thought Afghanistan was in the middle east.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh! I just accidently revealed my true identity - George W. Bush.

Nick A., Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

DV, So Nick was "nicking?" ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 17 October 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only is Afghanistan part of the Middle East, along with Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Western Sahara, Yemen but Burqas/Abayas/Chadors or whatever you want to call them are also worn in Saudi Arabia, Yemen & Iran and at least veils (often referred to as Burqa) in Morocco, Libya & Algeria although in some parts of Algeria it is apparently the men who are veiled.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 18 October 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

although in some parts of Algeria it is apparently the men who are veiled.

I really like the idea of putting men in beards into veils. If only they were to implement this idea in Western countries.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 18 October 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha yes good idea nicole i can think of some excellent examples where a veil would be a blessing.

donna (donna), Friday, 18 October 2002 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anything not offend them?

David Allen, Friday, 18 October 2002 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 18 October 2002 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Toraneko, maybe you should go on holidays to some other middle eastern countries, like the Ukraine.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Women veiled in Morocco? I've seen hundreds of photos to the contrary, at least.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Morocco has a law where women have to be veiled, but only if they are fugly

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

angela (angela), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

inserting the word "sort" into its correct place in the preceding response is left as an exercise for the reader.

angela (angela), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

toraneko, could you explain why you classify all those countries as part of the Mid East?

H (Heruy), Friday, 18 October 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I typed Middle East into Google and looked at the results.

eg. at http://www.wtgonline.com/navigate/region/mea.asp it says
Armenia
Bahrain
Georgia
Iran
Iraq
Israel
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Oman
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Syrian Arab Republic
Turkmenistan
United Arab Emirates
Yemen

and on http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/continents/Mideast/label/countrieslist.shtml it says:
Afghanistan
Azerbaijan
Armenia
Bahrain
Cyprus
Egypt
Iran
Iraq
Israel
Jordan
Kyrgyzstan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Oman
Pakistan
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Syria
Tajikistan
Turkey
Turkmenistan
United Arab Emirates
Uzbekistan
Yemen

At Yahoo it says:
Bahrain
Cyprus
Egypt
Iran
Iraq
Israel
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Oman
Palestinian Authority
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Syria
Turkey
United Arab Emirates
Yemen

at http://menic.utexas.edu/menic/ it says
Afghanistan
Algeria
Bahrain
Egypt
Iran
Iraq
Israel
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Libya
Mauritania
Morocco
Oman
Palestinian Authority
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Sudan
Syria
Tunisia
Turkey
United Arab Emirates
Western Sahara
Yemen

According to Unesco, Central Asia is
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan
Tajikistan
Turkmenistan
Uzbekistan

They refer to
Algeria
Bahrain
Egypt
Iraq
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Libya
Morocco
Oman
Quatar
Saudi Arabia
Sudan
Syria
Tunisia
United Arab Emirates
Yemen
as the Arab States

at http://www.jica.go.jp it says:
Central Asia consists of the five nations of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan, while Caucasia comprises the three nations of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia.
...and...
The Middle East region consists of 21 countries stretching from Afghanistan in the east to Morocco in the west and from Sudan in the south to Turkey in the north.

I hadn't heard of half those countries. I only thought of the Middle East as being:
Afghanistan
Egypt
Iran
Iraq
Israel
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Libya
Oman
Palestine
Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates
Yemen

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 October 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 October 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I have thought of a great embarrassing thing to do in the Middle East, which is to fly to Iran and say "I think you Arab guys are great".
