I firmly believe that Tim Horton's Canadian Maple or Double Chocolate donuts can do anything.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Krispy Kreme, cream-filled glazed.

the wonderfully flaky chocolate eclairs available at...damn, what is the name of that killer grocery store w/the green exterior on Queen Anne Avenue in Seattle, across from Pagliacci near Seattle Center? Lyra, help me!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohmigosh -- cinnamon dusted ring donuts.

Does anyone know where all the London Dunkin Donuts stands have disappeared to?
There used to be on on the corner of Glasshouse Street (Picadilly) and another nr the along Oxford Street, near Soho Square.
Their coffee was shite though.

Maple donuts. But they've disappeared. I haven't seen one in ages.

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to get maple frosted donuts at Dunkin' Donuts - about 2 years ago? - but then one day they just stopped coming... And the depression set in...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

YES EXACTLY!

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'chocolate eclairs' aren't real donuts, matos!

geeta, Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

my own cake donuts. failing that, someone else's. failing that, bavarian cream.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

as much as i don't like tim horton's (see other thread) i must confess those sour cream and chocolate timbits or whatever are a joy to consume. at 10 cents each it's a worthy investment if you really only need to use their 'customers only' washroom, or a reason to stand around and stare at all the hell's angels massed outside.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

double chocolate timbits were a bit of a dissappointment compared to the surprise of how yummy the sour cream ones were.

I like the sure and steady (and not too flashy) cake donuts. Anything with sprinkles on it should be spat upon without remorse.

french cruller or a really yeasty, doughy raised donut. how can it be wrong when it feels so right?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 17 October 2002 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple Cider donut with sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 17 October 2002 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to work for Tim's. The best part of the week was driving to the orchard up the road to buy a few bushels for the apple fritters. It was fantastic in there - nothing but nothing smells better than cedar and fresh apples! So no need to guess which donut is my favourite.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Boy, I told exactly the same orchard story (way back whenever) on that other thread. Apparently working for the 'Ho' for a year has left me with exactly ONE anecdote.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

other then to tell us why they didnt treat you well. None of my friends complained but they had a super manager.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

are donuts strictly an American thing. I don't think I understand donuts. I fear them.

where did you find these?? they make them at a little orchard outside my hometown and i've never found them anywhere else. :`(

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 17 October 2002 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I would looooooove to sate my curiosity re: the all-mighty Krispy Kreme doughnut (any / all varieties), since just such an establishment opened not more than 5 minutes' walking distance from my place. HOWEVER, I severely underestimated the gluttony of CT denizens and the allure of alien baked goods. You see, this establishment (the only one in CT, perhaps even in New England) has inspired folks to wait in lines for 2-3 hours for donuts. For a week or so, the drive-thru line stretched about 40 car lengths. People would park in the Ames parking lot next door to walk over and stand in line. Folks parked on all streets adjacent to the KK. Cones were placed; cops directed the massive throng of eaters. A woman parked in the drive-thru at 2 PM THE DAY BEFORE the grand opening.

What this means is that my favorite donut, to this point in my meager KK-lacking existance, is the Apple & Spice jobbie available @ Dunkin' Donuts AKA the only place where I won't have to spend 3/8ths of my workday waiting for service.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 October 2002 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I suppose I shouldn't talk shit about the whole Tim Ho's franchise, all though when I was there, they were just beginning their whole menu diversification thing - and it made life miserable in stores who were still staffed just to dole out quick coffee/donut orders. But the owners that we had were probably exceptionally harsh ones: they made money hand over fist, but they didn't pay well (I know that because I did the payroll and bank deposits), they once had me work 21 days in a row, they split my paycheque in two as I worked for both of their stores (for their convenience, not mine) but didn't bother to adjust the taxes so, me being just a naive kid, ended up owing over 600 dollars at the end of the year. Umm what else... they played favourites with their staff, they meddled with people's personal relationships, they brought their damned 12 yr old kid into the store and let him boss people around, they understaffed the stores to such a degree that you could work 8 hour shifts with the same person for three months and never have time for even one single personal conversation, they didn't have proper hand washing soap or clean cloths at the counters, the staff room was pathetic, oh god... I could just go on and on! I'll probably get sued now....

Kim (Kim), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

DONUT BIZITCH!

But only when filled with jelly.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor Kim, you had one of the hell managers. If you ever do the Maritimes, drop off at the Tim Horton's in Sackville, NB, as in right downtown not the one by the highway. They'd already be pouring my coffee as I cross the road, if they aren't all out back having a smoke.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Plain. The plain ones you get from the carts. Really!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 18 October 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to say anything good about the Happy Valley, but Atkins Farm, across from Hampshire College, sells cider doughnuts that God himself must bake. So moist, so good, and they actually taste like apple cider.

Benjamin, Friday, 18 October 2002 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Krispy Kreme are INSANELY overrated, and I think that half of the pleasure of those doughnuts comes from the name.

Doughnuts in Germany are so godawful that you almost forget how godawful German bagels are.

The best doughnuts in the entire world are available at Carlson's Bakery on West Street in Annapolis, Maryland.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 18 October 2002 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The savoury doughnut served in a big bowl of yoghurt which Jonesy and I ate at a curry house last night. Yum.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 18 October 2002 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A) close enough and B) I'm not really thinking of an eclair anyway, I'm thinking of a chocolate-topped, cream-filled 'nut. still can't remember the name of the Seattle store

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tesco Chocolate flavour cos they taste of LIQUOR.

Graham (graham), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The savoury doughnut served in a big bowl of yoghurt which Jonesy and I ate at a curry house last night. Yum.

Yum indeed. Known as a vada or vadai, I think. Along with the uthappam, best curry of the year. And we may not have seen Steve Lamacq in the pub last night, but we did see his greying mentor in the restaurant.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Lamacq's mentor is a savoury donut? RESPEC!

Graham (graham), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunkin' Donuts = dud, for the abovementioned discontinuation of the maple frosted donut, but also because they stopped making the holy almond croissant, which was filled with some kind of delicious almond paste. Damn them.

Nick A., Friday, 18 October 2002 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

all donuts are godlike!

There's some good things about the Valley. I'm driving distance from Atkins Farms right now. AF Cider doughnuts=Ambrosia

surely "doughnut" shd be high on any list of "reclaimed" words?

three months pass...
Fresh Cinnamon donuts from Outhouse Orchards on Hardscrabble Road in Croton Falls, NY.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmmmmmm...fresh hot Krispy Kremes. (The basic doughnut, of course. Cream or jam fillings merely weigh down the divine feathery goodness.)

There's one Krispy Kreme in the Washington area, on Route 1 south of Alexandria. My sister claims she was driving by the place once when the Hot Donuts sign lit up. According to her, people were making u-turns to get those fresh hot goodies.

I was wondering when donut bitch was going to say something about donuts

Now I'm picturing DB...covered only in a dusting of cinnamon sugar...
;^}

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 25 January 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm armed with Nutella and coconut flakes. Don't get me too excited. I'm warning you.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I had my first Krispy Kreme last Thanksgiving. I opted to eat the whole dozen and didn't eat the Thanksgiving meal that I had laboured over for three days. The guest who brought them later confided that she was going to leave them as a thank-you gift to have with my morning coffee. What a fool she was!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

But what I really crave (probably 'cause I can't have them without driving for several days) are Tim Horton's Honey Cruellers. When I fly into Toronto my first stop is always at the nearest Tim Horton's - and it's my last stop before flying back to the States, too.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Krispy Kremes taste like plastic once you've had a real donut

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What constitutes a "real donut," pray tell?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ones that are made fresh from fresh ingredients in small batches from a recipe that doesn't fill the donut with air.

in other words, the artisan approach - ones made by "real people" on farms. especially if they're, y'know, Amish or something.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...are those more cakey rather than yeasty? What is the leavening? While I won't debate that homemade by the Amish are probably infinitely superior to those mass-produced, I have been frustrated by the few time I have attempted to make donuts - I like line to be light and air, not cakey and so forth. And not drownding in covering, either.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Cakey, exactly. I have no idea if the Amish make donuts.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

*laughing* Ah, there does seem to be two fields of thought in donut preparation. Do you like your plain or with spices or topping or what?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 25 January 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

spicy tuna

OH WAIT WRONG THREAD

Nutella!? *swoons; blissful inviting expression on face*

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been craving donuts all morning and this thread is the last goddamned straw. The ultimate donut combo is 1 (one) vanilla French cruller and 1 (one) chocolate-frosted devil's food with nuts. If you are trying to fatten up you may add maple bars as needed to the above order. I am not trying to fatten up but I am trying not to do my pre-tour nervous smoke-a-lot thing so I'm guessing I'll be piling on the maple bars if I can manage to coax myself out of the house. No mean trick it being righteously cold outside. Please comfort me kind ilX0r people I am stressing out.

I am a fan of cake-style donuts. Specifically the whole wheat orange ones at Cupcake Cafe.

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 26 January 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

most donuts have their strong points. particular faves include plain cakes, plain old-fashioned, maple bars

ron (ron), Sunday, 26 January 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Krispy Kreme regular glazed (hot!) or cream-filled. Jelly donuts hit the sweet spot too.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, I was the first person to respond to this thread. I guess I have strong opinions on this subject.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I had one of those new cheesecake donuts at Dunkin' Donuts. It was...confusing. Not unpleasant, but I still prefer Boston Kreme.

I had a job once where in the morning there would be a spread of many dozen donuts laid out in neat stacks along a large table, much like that one scene in Twin Peaks.

I live near a few Swedish restaurants, though, so I'd have to say I'd prefer hot cinammon rolls at the moment. It's 4 AM here, so warm rolls in 0300 hours.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Cinnamon rolls, too. At Swedish bakeries. It's late/early.
