Faulkner would disown me but booze is a distant third; that said, I don't really know how to choose between weed (inspiration) and coffee (productivity)

I don't smoke weed anymore, whereas I am a functioning caffeine addict, but I'm not sure I could stop drinking coffee for four years and still rep for it as hard as I do weed

coffee > booze > weed

Coffee is something I enjoy on a daily basis. Booze is more of a weekly thing for me, but even one drink will send me to sleep fairly quickly, so I can't enjoy it as much as I'd like. Weed hasn't been a part of my life for a very long time, but I do have a secret desire to see legalization in TX sometime in the not-too-far-off future.

weed + coffee is the best but w/ a job and kids i don't really have many opportunities to enjoy that combination, i smoke at night after the boys are in bed so the weed + booze combination is more commmon for me. that said weed + booze has serious diminishing returns beyond the first drink or two, more than that and everything just spins and gets really gross feeling

weed (smoke a spliff p much every evening, would find it v hard to give up)
coffee (down to 1 cup in the morning, to crank me up)
booze (not teatotal but prob haven't had a drink in a month or more, and if I never drank again I wouldn't miss it in the slighest)

Booze [1] >> coffee >>>>>> weed [2]

[1] I put myself on the wagon a couple weeks ago, because my tolerance seemed to be increasing. In the interim it hasn't been very hard, but if I think about it too much I get rather frustrated and irritated.

[2] The few times I tried pot I never felt anything, and therefore have never pursued it.

coffee > booze >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> weed

I was torn on the booze and coffee ranking but Moodles set my right by noting that coffee is a daily enjoyment, whereas booze, while fabulous, is something I only partake in once a week or so.

Weed really isn't even on the chart because it jacks up my anxiety to a fever pitch and is not even remotely enjoyable. I tried again a couple of months ago even and only because I smoked the smallest amount, and because my smoking companion was handling everything well (I kept looking over at them and saying, "Well, okay, they're just smiling and enjoying themselves and not curled up in a ball clawing their face off so I'm probably okay, too..."), I was able to avoid losing my noodle completely but it still wasn't fun.

carl agatha, Friday, 14 August 2015 14:52 (nine years ago) link

These are all fine substances. I would say "if used in moderation" but actually I believe in "moderation in all things - including moderation." Excess can be instructive and it sometimes leads to the palace of wisdom, like somebody said (Susan Sarandon, I think).

In my youth I drank coffee all day, every day. Now that I am fortymumble I can't have it past lunchtime or it really will keep me up late in an uncomfortable way. Booze is a constant companion and I love it so. I take a great deal of care to prevent it from ruining my life, but it's so bound up with modern life and the culture that I inhabit as to be like air. I can imagine a life without it but I don't want to go there.

Weed was pretty ubiquitous when I was in college. Now that I am a 'burb dad, with a tie-wearing job, and an apparently responsible citizen? Not so much. Frankly I miss it. Not so much for its own sake, but as a pleasant presence. It is like a cozy brain-sweater that nicely accompanies music, sex, drinking, food, nature, books, friendship, and conversation. When I happen to encounter some weed it is most welcome, but I don't have a reliable connection and don't want it enough to skirt dangerous legal territory.

The older I get the less interesting booze is. Coffee is just a staple of my life now, I go through periods where i don't drink it, but if I have a pot of grounds then I am drinking a full 8 cup pot no matter what. As for the third substance I'm pretty sure wo it I would be on a string of anti-depression meds.

This question brought to you by workplace boredom: Has anyone ever damaged his or her life through coffee?

The nearest thing I can think of is people who have a several-times-a-day Starbucks habit, but in those cases the damage is financial, as opposed to legal or health-related.

Charlie Chaplin Challenge (j.lu), Friday, 14 August 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

probably some idiot somewhere has gone super overboard on the coffee and had some sort of health crisis from over stimulating their central nervous system.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 14 August 2015 18:11 (nine years ago) link

I think this question is a little weird because one of these things is not like the other and coffee just seems out of place and not all that comparable to the other two. That said:

w > b > c

I love weed but I'm old and lazy and don't have any connections but admittedly I haven't tried very hard so it's been over a year since I've smoked. i should fix that.

I love booze but it often does not love me. Also, my mother is a drunk and I'm 90% certain I inherited whatever genetic component there is to make one predisposed to alcoholism so it's something I try to be at least a little careful about.

Coffee is good.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 14 August 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

This coffee falls into your stomach, a sack whose velvety interior is lined with tapestries of suckers and papillae. The coffee finds nothing else in the sack, and so it attacks these delicate and voluptuous linings; it acts like a food and demands digestive juices; it wrings and twists the stomach for these juices, appealing as a pythoness appeals to her god; it brutalizes these beautiful stomach linings as a wagon master abuses ponies; the plexus becomes inflamed; sparks shoot all the way up to the brain. From that moment on, everything becomes agitated. Ideas quick-march into motion like battalions of a grand army to its legendary fighting ground, and the battle rages. Memories charge in, bright flags on high; the cavalry of metaphor deploys with a magnificent gallop; the artillery of logic rushes up with clattering wagons and cartridges; on imagination's orders, sharpshooters sight and fire; forms and shapes and characters rear up; the paper is spread with ink - for the nightly labor begins and ends with torrents of this black water, as a battle opens and concludes with black powder.

I live in a place where it is easy and legal to purchase high quality versions of all of these which is pretty nice.

Overall, pleasure-wise, coffee is the least of these but the only one that I cannot live without on a daily basis. I can take or leave the other two for the most part. Weed is the one I like the most but go without the most often (like traveling to places where it isn't legal), and beer and wine are delicious but I really don't like to get drunk anymore so I rarely have more than two drinks per day.

all 3 in the same few hours is a great time!

coffee is the one i'm addicted to so i harbor resentment toward it (but mostly myself) even though it wakes me up and i can't function without it

booze is a strong contender. i feel 100x more sociable, but it's absence also makes me feel depressed when i realize i can't even figure out how to speak out loud during the afternoon without second-guessing everything word that comes out.

weed makes me feel happy and creative and insanely productive. it also makes me lift up my dog's earflap and whisper "boof." winner!

I quit drinking 13 years ago, and for the past two/three months caffeine is the closest I've been to feeling "I need this shit" with a substance other than alcohol. Walking from work to the bus station this evening I chugged down a Red Bull and while doing so I realised that I was using the same kind of arguments I used in the past to justify drinking to justify consuming caffeine.

love a good splidd now and again, but you get very little bang for your buck where i live. it's expensive, subject to drought and besides when i do get hold of some, i tend to smoke it daily. for better or worse that means i tend to go two-weeks on, three weeks off on average which is okay i guess, but i always have to consider it a treat.
i say 'for better or worse' because i find that while i'm a more creative, aesthetist person on weed, it can make me a bit lazy and less driven.

Booze on the other hand is always available. it's also fairly expensive. but i've never really managed to go a long time without it. i drink a lot less than i used to, but i still have alcohol at least once a week, often to the point of being drunk. i don't know what it's like to go out in the evening and not at least have a beer. i'm not a bad drunk either, and tend to be MORE reasonable, outgoing and accommodating than while sober. I think if I gave up drinking, it would make me a healthier person. I'd lose weight and be much more likely to give up cigarettes, since these days I rarely smoke unless I drink (but if I do drink, I chainsmoke). That said, I worry I'd have trouble socialising and that social anxiety would consume me if I went out and stayed sober - I'd be less likely to initiate conversation etc, which i'm quite good at when under the influence.

Coffee is a means to an end - I have a cup in the morning, every morning, but since making it a daily habit I've noticed my teeth getting worse and worse. I'd happily give it up, but it just tastes nice and wakes me up a bit.

Years of drinking too much unremarkable coffee all day long at work (simply because it's available and I'm bored, and basically addicted) has really dimmed my enthusiasm toward the stuff - I don't even keep it in the house anymore. Still appreciate the head rush but the truly memorable cup of coffee grows more elusive.
