gala has become the new red delicious, iow the biggest mass-produced variety. pink ladies are a bit nicer, imo.
― Aimless, Tuesday, 15 September 2015 19:26 (ten years ago)
I much prefer pink lady, but the ones I just bought were kinda soft.
Honeycrisp are good but goddamn expensive, like 2-3x price of ordinary "premium" apples.
Costco had these jawns called Kanzi or something that I thought were pretty good, sort of a happy medium in taste, price and crispness.

ate an apple while driving late last night, threw the core out the window, felt pretty old school

i mean whatever but it's an apple not a movement

I am a hardcore Granny Smither (Smithite?). But of the non-green variety, honeycrisps are great, pink ladys are good, galas are mostly just ok. I've got no time at all for anything with "delicious" in the name. I had a great weird golden variety several years ago, the apple was actually golden, not yellow like golden delicious.

Fall Spys are out of this world. Just the right level of tart. They seemed to go woolly pretty early on in the year last year, though.

Spys
Golden russets are the ones I was thinking of above.

Also the subtle and lovely Cox's Orange Pippin, but I've never seen those in N America.

Y'all ain't got no apple game if you ain't got Cox's.
― ledge, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 08:09 (ten years ago)
Cox's are certainly the rockist's favourite.
I read a thing at the weekend that said Golden Delicious isn't an intrinsically insipid variety: it's just had its reputation ruined by bad agribusiness. Apparently it can taste quite good from a small French grower. I look forward to being persuaded.
Russets are great, but you ideally have to eat them quickly as the outside of them goes soft quite quickly.
I'm quite a fan of the new-fangled Jazz™ though the trademark thing is a bit off-putting.

Got some Discoverys at the moment, which are really evocative of the English countryside to me. Lovely at their best, but they keep even worse than russets.
― Alba, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 09:06 (ten years ago)
For some reason I think russets should be lowercase, but other varieties uppercase.
Discovery is the popists choice I suppose?
I like the taste of russets but I can't get with that sandpaper skin - those golden russets look a bit shinier though.

wait I always eat the seeds b/c (I think) I read somewhere that they were a kind of superfood. and contain trace amounts of cyanide, interestingly. a whole cup would kill you!

I use this literally everyday. Macs and Granny Smiths are my goto varieties but gala/pink lady/honeycrisp all nice as well.

From what i read the seeds are probably OK, cyanide-wise, so long as you don't chew open the shells, but I don't see how you could unlock any superfood powers if they just passed through you unscathed.

anybody know of any good Windows 10 apps to transfer files from my iPhone?
i just want to cut and paste all of my photos/videos. i have used some shareware for this in the past but it seems like Apple keeps updating iTunes specifically to thwart the ability to copy files to your computer.

A Granny Smith apple and paper bag are helping to get these avocados to ripen in time to make guacamole Thursday. Thank you apple.
