honorable mention to the super chemical-tasting but somehow still delicious Fudge Brownies

swiss cake rolls have just the right squishiness. i like nutty bars when i like to convince myself it's a more 'substantial' food. you can really take your time with them; the layers of wafer and chocolate break apart very well. but oatmeal creme pies kind of the horse to beat IMO.

first one i ever had was a star crunch, at the beach as a kid. i subsequently considered them a first class treat for ages. they kinda don't do it for me as an adult but i like the concept.

Have gone thru Star Crunch, Oatmeal Creme Pies and Swiss Cake Roll phases, but the only one I actually want to eat today is Zebra Cakes.

I only ever get zebra cakes and swiss rolls but I remember enjoying star crunch in my lunch box everday even if i never sang it's praises.

ive had the chocolate chip creme pies, they're basically gross but not moreso than lots of the others. more or less exactly what you'd expect. would be better if the chocolate chip part were more like a chocolate chip cookie and less like oily industrial pastry goo. i know people say this about oatmeal creme pies, but i feel those have an identity of their own at this point.

Oatmeal Creme Pies are awesome too, but too much of a good thing. Nutty Bars are never enough of a good thing, I always want more.

the key w/ little debbie snacks is how cheap they were (well are still but man they held on to that dollar a box - A DOLLAR A FUCKING BOX - price for a long time and when you were practically broke you could still scrounge up a quarter and buy an individual one at the store. on that basis i'm picking nutty bars cuz you can take them apart and really nurse the fuck out of that snack. shoutout to their honey buns warmed up in the microwave for twelve seconds- breakfast of champions.

To think my mom used to pack these with my lunch. She might as well have smeared vanilla ice cream on a Tupperware bowl and said, "Start chewing!"

i had a need to eat these recently—nutty bars—and my fancy-ass grocery store is too goooooood to stock snaaack caaaakes lousy bums

when i was a kid and under the totalitarian control of my parents we would sometimes get to have cupcakes, and swiss rolls, and nutty bars, but never anything else from the vast world of possibilities. i remember i had an oatmeal cream pie once somewhere, like at school or something, and i was thinking like, how come we can't have these. it's weird how your parents leave you COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS TO REALITY because of some personal quirk or whatever of theirs that they like cupcakes but not honey buns.

Swiss Cake Rolls in the fridge are the best! Doesn't even compare to the more expensive Ho Hos.

Oatmeal Pies vs. Nutty Bars imo, the best of the best. Star Crunch might be my third choice, but I have no desire to eat another one ever.

Honourable mention to Oatmeal Cream Pies but I practically lived on Star Crunch and Coffee (hey isn't that a Prince song) during art school (a dollar a box!) to the point where a friend and I actually tried to make our own version when the local Price Chopper ran out. (Didn't even come close but effectively ruined a baking sheet doing it.)

voted Swiss Cake Rolls immediately but yeah Oatmeal Cream Pies and Nutty Bars really are the other two contenders. Nutty Bars are weirdly big, like I eat one (or ate, it's probably been a decade or more) and think it's a Kit Kat or a wafer cookie and it's not, it's a big ass bar, multi layered, like a millefeuille, like what a millefeuille would be if it actually had a mille feuilles. but I digress: Nutty Bars are really big and that's why they're a contender here. I think I forgot what I was saying.

so at this point i've resampled what i consider the shortlist: oatmeal creme, nutty bars, fudge rounds, star crunch, swiss cake rolls. (marshmallow supremes are sort of the equal of those but to me off in their own world - too fancy.) don't think i can pick a winner yet but i'm letting swiss cake rolls and star crunches fall down to the second tier - they're good but not as good. star crunch in particular has great texture but not quite the wallop of flavor i'm looking for.

the MSRP for individually-packaged little debbie snack cakes has slipped up to 59 cents ... the end of an era for impulsive nyc bodega purchases where one crisp dollar bill gets you a can of coke and a sweet treat. in the grand scheme not the worst thing happening right now but man.......

also, my local bodegas are increasingly bereft of the classic Zebra Cakes, stocking only a giant-size $1 version (way more than you ever want), or the peculiar Zebra Cake Roll, which is exactly what you'd think, and is fine but just not quite the real thing.

No idea how Fudge Rounds came in so low. That particular flavor is sui generis afaict.

This fall, Little Debbie had these Pumpkin Spice Cake Rolls with a cream-cheese like filling, and I tried them on a whim. Two days later, I returned to the store and bought the rest of their stock. They are really good.

agreed re: fudge rounds. the secret may be that the flavor is more cocoa, but the title tells your brain to expect fudge, and the fusion happens unconsciously.

At first I read that as unconscionably, which is a good adverb for Little Debbie in general.

Inflation-era development: single snack cakes have risen to a consistent $1.75 or $2 price point in Brooklyn bodegas. At the same time, as far as I've seen, they've slid towards only offering the giant-size versions, which, truth be told, is too much snack cake. So maybe it's all for the best.
