Difficult People also good. Although Precious still isn't funny.

Guys, Im so in love with the path although Id be super happy if Hawk didnt exist.

It's always (sunny successor), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:25 (eight years ago)

do you find him extraneous/irritating? he gets more of a character arc eventually but I can understand

a landlocked exclave (mh), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:51 (eight years ago)

I mean I liked him when he was hooking up with that girl from school but then he just turned into a little shit. Mini-Cal. Way too much of the first half of season 2 centered on him.

It's always (sunny successor), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 18:53 (eight years ago)

irritating but that's kind of the point! kids get corrupted by influences that seem ok to them but have this dark shitty side

all of the second season was Cal putting on this facade of being decent and completely falling apart at the seams, and I feel like Hawk saw only the former and was really looking for a role model

a landlocked exclave (mh), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 19:14 (eight years ago)

i'm thinking hulu redid their interface (at least on appletv) to facilitate their new live tv plans but, wow, they really just threw out the old design completely

mh, Thursday, 11 May 2017 18:01 (eight years ago)

you gotta dig around but a bunch of pedro almodovar are on hulu right now

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:28 (eight years ago)

I gave up on The Path season 2 about 5 episodes from the end. Still mean to get around to it but life is getting in the way.

Watched Top Of The Lake this week, because I remembered it getting good reviews and frankly I can't convince myself to watch The Handmaid's Tale just yet. TOTL was OK but had multiple glaring plot holes and a whole bunch of unnecessary tangents (ex: Holly Hunter's character had ZERO to do with anything and could easily have been excised from the first draft of the script entirely).

I was just complaining about this on the Filmstruck thread. Apparently it rolled out on some platforms a few months ago, everybody hated it, but it's only hit Roku users a few days back. Hooray.

Just watched the The Dana Carvey Show doc Too Funny To Fail. So great! I loved the show at the time, but didn't realize what a murderer's row of comedy they had assembled. Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell in their first TV roles ever. Louis CK and Robert Smigel running the writer's room. Jam from Parks and Rec! Charlie Kaufman?! Such an amazing show, and a hilarious lesson of how to get Disney to cancel your show as quickly as possible.

DJI, Monday, 30 October 2017 02:01 (seven years ago)

Heads up, all 8 episodes of the actual Dana Carvey Show are also on Hulu. Which you’d think they would be promoting in tandem with the show.

I've only watched the first 7-8 episodes or so but the EDM goths are by far the highlight. I forget the context but at one point one of them yells "PREDICTABLE!" in a growly death metal voice and that's been getting a lot of use in my own household lately.

Pitter patter

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 03:26 (five years ago)

There's a documentary up called Dina. I'd never heard of it before but it won a bunch of awards in 2017. It's about a middleaged autistic woman from the Philadelphia suburbs who winds up getting engaged to an autistic Walmart employee with aspergers. The met on the bus I think, can't remember. Anyway, story starts shortly after their engagement, and the filmmakers (who apparently had known Dina's family her whole life) get so many close shots of their developing relationship right from the post-engagement point, like them hanging out and watching movies and eating pizza in her apartment, meeting each others parents, and a long day's bus trip to Ocean City, New Jersey where you get to really savor/ponder the nature of their communication, question their feelings, wonder about their attraction. Just really intimate, golden documentary stuff like that. But there's this twist in the middle when it's been established that they like each other and everything, but you find out he's a fortysomething year old virgin, and then the story sort of shifts to being about this woman's efforts to try and get him to bone down despite his terror about it. And he clearly loves her but he's just not having it, much to her frustration. There's a scene where she gifts him a book on The Art of Lovemaking, and jesus christ the way his expression changes and he turns into this totally terrified individual trying to deal with her advances and struggle to explain how he can't quite seem to parlay his masturbation habits into a sexual relationship with a woman, and you get to see her struggling to explain her frustrations of "having a history of lovemaking with other men." From there, you get to witness their super cringey wedding and super cringey honeymoon at a tacky romance motel in the Poconos called Cove Haven, followed by a genuinely poignant character backstory reveal the day after (complete with 911 call recordings!). Anyway, it's great. Watch Dina.

del griffith, Thursday, 5 September 2019 02:53 (five years ago)

Got enjoyably wrapped up and have now watched most of Letterkenny. I'm kinda fascinated by the, umm, impulses about values that it's trying to combine, where it want to insist on rural characters' progressiveness and moral sophistication, and also let itself be an all-in love letter to strong-and-silent masculinity, and the pitch that progressiveness as a kind of common-decency egalitarian code — I mean, it's just the usual classic mythology of the competent, upstanding, fair-minded, salt-of-the-earth North American, but the show manages to arrive at it in such a strange and caricatured way that it somehow becomes super-weird again? But it buys into it so much more than it interrogates it, it's got a real Wayne Gaze and can't help making it as persuasive as possible

ን (nabisco), Thursday, 5 September 2019 21:47 (five years ago)

Like by the Christmas-party episode it really does become conservative traditional Wayne tolerantly but uncomfortably grimacing at everyone else's emotional and sexual and social issues, including the hockey jocks just being touched by and grateful for his kind present

ን (nabisco), Thursday, 5 September 2019 21:57 (five years ago)

del griffith, Friday, 6 September 2019 01:30 (five years ago)

C, i kinda imagine if you didn’t like it on first blush there’s a damn high likelihood it’s just not up yr alley, and honestly if this thing is not up someone’s alley it must be incredibly annoying

ን (nabisco), Friday, 6 September 2019 04:13 (five years ago)

Can confirm, it's incredibly annoying to me.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 September 2019 05:48 (five years ago)

N, I find something like I think You Should Leave incredibly annoying, but I remember it was the pacing of LetterKenny being difficult. The episodes seemed really long for some reason.

Yerac, Friday, 6 September 2019 12:09 (five years ago)

The best character on letterkenny by far is Stewart, the EDM goth kid. I’ve watched maybe 8 or so episodes and most all of the funniest moments have involved him in some way

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 6 September 2019 13:14 (five years ago)

Just the fact that there are four social groups in Letterkenny and they're hicks/farmers (logical), Christians (logical), hockey players (logical) and... cybergoths is insanely funny to me.
