... is a weird word, is it not? Do people still use it? I don't suppose Americans have ever used it, or am I wrong about that? It's Australian Aboriginal in origin, apparently.

I've heard it used in the UK, in the context of 1. self-conscious efforts to establish if anyone is in, 2. passive-aggressive efforts to make the point that people clearly are in, but have not yet responded to, e.g., a prior call to come to dinner.

it's not even used here except in ironic/old fashioned contexts tbh. it's like corker or strewth.
