cats all the way.

the only dog breed I feel any affection for is basset hounds. the rest = gtfo you are annoying with yr barking and slobbering and shitting all over the place.

Οὖτις, Monday, 2 November 2015 23:36 (nine years ago)

We own two cats and a dog and love them all equally. Choosing would be a terrible Sophie's Choice kind of thing.

Darin, Monday, 2 November 2015 23:40 (nine years ago)

cats for myself, dogs for friends/family

get a similar feeling after spending some time with someone else's dogs as I do with someone else's kids..."omg they're so cute but I'm really glad I can skate outta here and not have to deal with all that shit 24/7".

ULTIMATE: Dogs vs. Cats

soref, Monday, 2 November 2015 23:59 (nine years ago)

Sorry, I guess the search engine must require very specific character entries. I looked under "cats dogs" and nothing came up.

Darin, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 00:07 (nine years ago)

I love walking through greenbelt with my Labrador, even when it is pissing it down or a murky pea-souper like tonight. There used to be an old woman I have not seen for years, but her cats used to follow her for walkies along with the dogs, that was an awesome sight.

xelab, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 00:47 (nine years ago)

dogs are totally awesome but there's nothing like a cat. cats ftw

Yeah, if I am walking one of the dogs round the block, a couple of the cats will usually come with me. I think the older dogs find this a little embarrassing.

trishyb, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 05:39 (nine years ago)

Dogs are annoying but cats are pointless, voted dogs.

Caput Johannis in Disco (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 10:54 (nine years ago)

Grew up with both - at one point three dogs and two cats - but have only had cats since 1999, and Em and I have only had cats since we moved in together. Would have a dog in a heartbeat if we had a proper garden and didn't both have to work. I probably side just with cats, but it's pretty damn close. Nora met two labradoodles at the weekend and she loved it.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 12:12 (nine years ago)

latebloomer, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 12:14 (nine years ago)

I am more temperamentally predisposed toward being a cat owner, but I love cats and dogs equally. They're both awesome and rewarding.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 12:24 (nine years ago)

Cats smell nice, have soft fur, make dainty little meowing noises. Dogs smell like balogna that's been farted on, have greasy hair, and make a goddamn racket every time someone walks by the house.

My current cat bites me all the time, but he's really an anomaly in a long line of excellent animals.

Cat's

ciderpress, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 14:21 (nine years ago)

Food or breathing?

Both are great. Dogs are easier to understand but scarier if you suck at pet stewardship, where cats mostly just get depressed and fat if you should have stuck to Tamagotchi.

I've found that cats are easier to take care of than house plants.

I love both more or less equally, but I haven't had a dog since I left my mom's house for college more than 25 years ago, whereas I've had cats ever since I was married.

Resting Bushface (Phil D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:30 (nine years ago)

Me and my partner once looked after her brother's house while he was on holiday. He had something like 9 dogs 17 cats and he took 3 of his dogs on holiday to the Scottish Highlands with him. His wife was in the cat protection league and he was a serial dog rescuer. He had partitions to separate the cats + dogs and it was a good set-up but it was still constant daily chaos. I would say it was enjoyable for a week but I couldn't live like that f/t.

xelab, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:46 (nine years ago)

If I really had to choose, I'd probably go with dog due to the sheer intensity of a canine relationship. The lows are pretty low, but the highs are incredible. I'd compare dog ownership to parenting and cats to chill roommates.

Darin, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:52 (nine years ago)

this is a topic of significant dispute in my household

responsive awkward wannabe humans who grin and cuddle vs bird hoovers, imo

twunty fifteen (imago), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:57 (nine years ago)

there is definitely a parental level of responsibility with dog ownership, sadly too many people do not quite grasp this

xelab, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:58 (nine years ago)

We must have different relationships with our cats than a lot of people do, because they can't stand to be more than a few feet away from us.

Resting Bushface (Phil D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:59 (nine years ago)

I must give dogs their due, they really know how to enjoy themselves.

Caput Johannis in Disco (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:59 (nine years ago)

Caput Johannis in Disco (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 16:00 (nine years ago)

Cats are weird and antisocial and creepy.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 16:57 (nine years ago)

They slink around and always look like they're plotting against you. Hate cats.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 16:57 (nine years ago)

Dogs forever.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:08 (nine years ago)

I got no beef with people who don't get cats and don't own them. It's folks who love cats because they are fat and immobile that suck.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:10 (nine years ago)

If I got to know a cat I'm sure that I'd like them much more. I like most animals except rodenty type things and birds who are also creepy and dead in the eyes and can get fucked. I just get really uncomfortable around cats because they're so foreign to me and completely different to dogs who are the best.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:16 (nine years ago)

Tbh I think I'm a little afraid of cats.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:16 (nine years ago)

yeah this is otm. if you interact with your cat, talk to it, play with it, etc., instead of just putting down food and ignoring it most of the time the way a depressing number of ppl i've known do, your cat will probably be responsive and friendly.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:28 (nine years ago)

reading about how cats communicate via blinks was a high point in cat ownership for me. my wife and I still attempt to communicate via series of blinks when we can't speak freely.

death to all mammals.

monster mash, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:30 (nine years ago)

Different animals for different tasks.

Dogs: wrasslin', walking, having an adventure, going in the car, good times, running around on the beach.
Cats: sitting at (and on) the computer, napping, riding around on my shoulder, telling secrets.

Although, our cats and dogs have lived together so long they've rubbed off on each other. The cats will come and beg from me while I'm cooking, even though they don't eat raw veg, and the dogs will try to curl up on my lap, even though they weigh 20kg.

trishyb, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 19:00 (nine years ago)

Yeah, watching our cats and dogs pick up each other's behavioral ticks in amusing. One of our cats has bullied our dog into cuddling with her after an eighteen month aggressively affectionate campaign.

Darin, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 19:18 (nine years ago)

after 5 minutes of leaving the room they were in, 1 cat came and lied by my feet, 2nd cat came and snuggled up to my chest and is purring loudly. cats def aren't as social and people-loving as dogs on the average, but categorical "cats are antisocial/just want food/will eat you when you're dead and not shed a tear/etc" statements just show a limited experience with cats by whomever is statementing. they have a very short time window of being socialized to humans and if that's missed, their natural instincts to be VERY suspicious of ANYTHING alive takes hold and never lets go.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 21:37 (nine years ago)

when ppl say cats are antisocial i tend to think "well, they're animals." cats were domesticated much later than dogs and served a very different purpose (ppl kept cats around to catch vermin, which required less interaction w/ humans than typical dog tasks like hunting), so they definitely interact with us in a very different way. even the most loving and social cats i've had have moments where they just want to go off and wander around by themselves, whereas most of the dogs my family has owned don't seem to get sick of hanging out with humans.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 22:06 (nine years ago)

I think it's Siamese that are known for being more "dog-like" wrt people. I'd love to have one and see if that's true, but what are the odds of one turning up at a shelter when I'm looking to adopt...

iirc the most dog-like cats in terms of behaviour are the hairless sphinx cats, also their inability to retain heat makes them crave closeness with their owner

I couldn't own a dog, it's a shallow cliché but one main reason is picking up faeces in the street

how many of the people who voted actually own or have owned either, though. some people have never experienced owning a cat or dog, and they base their opinion on casual interactions with other people's pets or stereotypes.

i have lived with both cats and dogs. i love dogs. my favourite was one particular dog that thought it was a cat

Yeah, I always feel sorry for the dogs I meet out walking whose owners don't want to interact with other dogs or with other owners, so they don't let their dogs interact with them either. And I don't mean people with dog-aggressive or nervous dogs. I'm talking about dogs who I see in the distance who are ears up, tail wagging, desperate to come down to where the action is, but their owners don't want to, so they miss out. I think it's easier to be a cat owner if you don't want to deal with people or the outside world in general.

trishyb, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 06:31 (nine years ago)

Was hoping more people would choose the right answer ("they're both awesome").
