"It's really meant to be enjoyed with food"

what a miserable attitude towards life

brimstead, Saturday, 7 November 2015 23:03 (ten years ago)

not the food part, the "it's really meant to be" part

brimstead, Saturday, 7 November 2015 23:04 (ten years ago)

dude seriously the nicest most friendly least attitude-flexing wine bros still always pull out this line

tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 7 November 2015 23:53 (ten years ago)

I thought wine was all about the flavors. How the hell am I supposed to taste it when I still have the flavor of beef jerky in my mouth?

austinato (Austin), Saturday, 7 November 2015 23:56 (ten years ago)

At a winery rn. Tasting without food.

the grimes of claire boucher ('90s on) (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 7 November 2015 23:59 (ten years ago)

Bags of beef jerky for sale, though

For the purposes of this poll do Slim Jims (tm) and Cheez Wiz (tm) count as food?

Aimless, Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

I have no palate and will drink Riunite on ice or sommelier-recommended wine at a fancy restaurant with equal gusto so "just drinkin' wine" pretty much sums up my entire, possibly gross, approach.

carl agatha, Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:17 (ten years ago)

Beef jerky is gross.

You're completely normal, carl.

austinato (Austin), Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:19 (ten years ago)

maybe one day i'll "develop" whatever the hell it is that lets people notice and appreciate "pairings" and "compliments"

brimstead, Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:22 (ten years ago)

let me try again. what is the problem with having wine sans food besides "you're not supposed to"?

brimstead, Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:25 (ten years ago)

do wine bores view drinking wine without food like you're guzzling down marinara or something

brimstead, Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:26 (ten years ago)

I’ve become used to the notion that not everybody assumes wine is meant to go with food. But I find the idea of divorcing the two unsettling to say the least. Personally speaking, I love a glass of wine when I’m cooking, as an aperitif. The idea of not finishing a glass after pushing back from the table? Perish the thought! But I can conceive of very few social situations not involving food where I would want to drink wine. It’s not that I’m antisocial; I’m just pro food-and-wine.

tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 8 November 2015 00:48 (ten years ago)

a drink on its own is of course great, any kind of drink can be a standalone thing

that said I think wine may be better suited than other drinks to enjoy with food and I am not a huge wine drinker so when I do drink wine it tends to be with food

marcos, Sunday, 8 November 2015 01:08 (ten years ago)

I simply believe that the pleasure of food and wine, enjoyed in harmony, is exponentially greater than the uncombined parts

this is all that really needs to be said

At home, I think of wine primarily as a grocery item, perhaps an overly expensive one with an outsized meaning, but ultimately part of the ensemble of a meal.

lol foodie talk like this just kills me

brimstead, Sunday, 8 November 2015 01:08 (ten years ago)

brimstead, Sunday, 8 November 2015 01:10 (ten years ago)

When I worked for the city, one of my jobs was watching rented out buildings during private parties.

The amount of wine consumed in conjunction with cake —and nothing else— at weddings is hilarious in this regard, to say the least.

austinato (Austin), Sunday, 8 November 2015 01:11 (ten years ago)

I was hoping this would be a massive, worldwide varietal throwdown, but OK. Obviously the first option is the correct one, yet I can't think of an occasion when the wine-drinking experience wouldn't be enhanced with the accompaniment of food, even if it's something like Planter's Peanuts.

Josefa, Sunday, 8 November 2015 03:03 (ten years ago)

it's not good to drink on empty stomach

brimstead, Sunday, 8 November 2015 03:36 (ten years ago)

Is any alcohol?

austinato (Austin), Sunday, 8 November 2015 03:47 (ten years ago)

if you want to get drunk it is

Wine is had with food? Wha?

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Sunday, 8 November 2015 10:52 (ten years ago)

I pretty much only drink wine with or after food, and I don't think I've ever ordered a glass of wine for myself in a pub. The idea of drinking wine on an empty stomach is entirely offputting to me but then so is the idea of drinking almost anything on an empty stomach these days. I still really like wine, and that's okay, because I eat food every day so plenty of opportunities to drink wine exist.

Prescriptivist attitudes around wine are terrible obviously, but surely anyone pulling the "it's really meant to be enjoyed with food" line is a wine psued at best? Like actual high-end wine tasting never involves food, right?

Does drinking wine for several hours AFTER dinner count here? I mean I do that regularly. That's my real wine-drinking zone if I'm honest.

(I only really drink red as well, I think white is slightly different - I mean that's much easier to drink).

Matt DC, Sunday, 8 November 2015 11:16 (ten years ago)

arbiters of taste are ridiculous in any cultural field is the lesson to be drawn for the 10 billionth time here

John Dope Assos (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 8 November 2015 11:18 (ten years ago)

I can drink the occasional glass, mostly white, without dinner, as I did yesterday when I visited my parents early yesterday afternoon; otherwise I stick to wine with dinner, sorry. I can, though, keep drinking wine after dinner.

If I stay in on Saturday or Sunday night, I'll mix a cocktail before dinner and open or finish a bottle of red for the meal.

people who say shit like this are also the folks who use the word "notes" incessantly

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 8 November 2015 12:36 (ten years ago)

I like white wine with ice in it.

carl agatha, Sunday, 8 November 2015 14:37 (ten years ago)

Saying you should only drink wine with food is like saying you should only listen to music at night.

Yerac, Sunday, 8 November 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)

I don't know what about you ought to do but I like it better with food. around here it's really uncommon to have wine without food, even if it's just with bread / cheese or sausage.

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 8 November 2015 17:58 (ten years ago)

voted 2nd option btw

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 8 November 2015 17:59 (ten years ago)

The way this poll is phrased doesn't invite serious answers (or even respect for the question), but the simple truth is that I drink wine with my dinner and I might take a few sips as I cook dinner, but this has not always been the sum of my wine drinking habits and I anyone can drink wine in any way they please and it is no skin off my nose.

But wine snobbery is such a marginalized position among the general ruck of wine drinkers that it ought to be very easy to ignore it and just get on with life.

Aimless, Sunday, 8 November 2015 18:21 (ten years ago)

One of my best friends is a very knowledgeable sommelier, I told him abt this poll and he said it was silly :P

niels, Monday, 9 November 2015 18:00 (ten years ago)

i know the writer is an Actual Wine Person, but the whole "you're supposed to" shit is such a disgusting aspirational affectation that strikes me as distinctly American for whatever reason (prob because i am american)

brimstead, Monday, 9 November 2015 19:07 (ten years ago)

Hehe I had the same thought but from a prejudiced European perspective, that it's neurotically aspirational and stereotypically American to phrase it like that

niels, Monday, 9 November 2015 19:14 (ten years ago)

the only time i really notice this is when i am nearly finished my first glass of wine by the time the food arrives, then i think "this does taste nicer with food".

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 9 November 2015 21:19 (ten years ago)

Acceptable alternatives:

"Wine is great with food!"
"I really enjoy wine more with food"
"Have you tried wine with food? Some people enjoy it more that way."

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 9 November 2015 21:22 (ten years ago)

Wine is definitely not "meant to be enjoyed" in one particular way though, wine is very fucking old and has been enjoyed many ways.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 9 November 2015 21:23 (ten years ago)

Wine is meant to be swirled, sniffed, and dissected to the point that no one around you has any fun.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 9 November 2015 21:24 (ten years ago)

if you aren't taking ecstasy with your wine, i pity you

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 9 November 2015 22:05 (ten years ago)

I only drink champagne when I'm happy, and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty.
