Gatwick fucked by two drones (or maybe one, or maybe a helicopter, or aliens, but probably drones).

'no idea' when airport will reopen as police still trying to catch drones
what is the battery life on these things? how hard is it to triangulate the signal to find the operator?
― large bananas pregnant (ledge), Thursday, 20 December 2018 13:32 (six years ago)
More than 16 and half hours after a drone was first spotted at Gatwick it has still not be disabled.
Trying my best not to be clueless internet commentator criticising things he has no idea about, but, really?
― large bananas pregnant (ledge), Thursday, 20 December 2018 13:37 (six years ago)
That's pretty crazy that there's no way to neutralize these...It's a very easy way for terrorists or whatever to mess with a whole country, then !
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 20 December 2018 13:39 (six years ago)
Battery life is ~30 minutes so yeah.

― rip van wanko, Thursday, 20 December 2018 14:10 (six years ago)
Some guy in the Guardian says there are "drone rifles" which lock onto the drone's specific frequency and disable it. Unsurprisingly, Gatwick Airport doesn't have one of these.

I had read/seen that some highly sensitive sites (nuclear plants, etc) had trained hawks, eagles or something to take down drones.that's badass !

Any particular reason why a cancelled family trip to (one presumes) Finland for Christmas is less than deserving of your full sympathy?

My friends have had their trip to Austria fucked, no chance for an alternative flight for some reason.
My wife is supposed to be flying to Austria on Saturday to stay with a family there and see the traditional Austrian Xmas which is something she's wanted to see for years. She doesn't have many Xmases left so my opinion of the people doing this is let's say not good. It's perhaps a small mercy that the rail strike caused me to cancel my trip home to the Midlands this weekend so at least if her flight gets cancelled I'll be at home

Has there been any article yet about other countries preparedness? Is it just the Conservative government that's terrible at this, or is Gatwick something that could happen anywhere? It seems weirdly implacable, like Eyjafjallajökull.

I read an article saying they'd stopped trying to use eagles because the rotors on larger drones could damage their talons

Gonna air a side of me that I usually keep off the Internet but claiming there was no drone now reeks of government cover-up to me: https://t.co/Qgt0Rojpvo— Stephen Bush (@stephenkb) December 24, 2018
Read this thread that places drone strike within context of possible hybrid warfare. Maximum disruption for minimum outlay. "Wanker with a drone" angle was convenient for govt. National security - including economic - wide open & completely defencelesshttps://t.co/JnM2Rxa2OM— Carole Cadwalladr (@carolecadwalla) December 23, 2018
Now that the original Drone Truther position (there were no drones) has become mainstream, please move on to the updated Drone Truther position.

In historical perspective, the phantom drone sightings at Gatwick make perfect sense. They are the 21st-century equivalent of apparitions of phantom battles seen in the sky at moments of national crisis, such as the apparitions seen over Edgehill just before Christmas 1642 pic.twitter.com/IOVIsvrTXF— Dr Francis Young (@DrFrancisYoung) December 24, 2018

The worst way to look for an aerial drone is from above with all the ground clutter.
Any drone with more than an hour flytime would be gasoline powered, and would glow in thermal vision from below.
