How you broke in

Ronan's thread "Difficult to break into" made me think, why not ask people who have broken in how they did it.

So, if you work in the creative industries (writer, editor, painter-decorator etc.), how did you work your way in? Did you have a 'first break'?

Please do not mention the lizards.

Right place right time. Simple as that.

That is not v.specific Mark.

I don't know if I have or not.

I haven't. I got into my last job by attending an interview I knew I was unqualified for because it was the only thing advertised that week that was remotely close to what I wanted.

Fortunately, they idn't find anyone to fill the post, and liked me enough to create a kind of junior version of it for me. Not that it worked out in the end, but I have to take at least some of the blame for that. Sigh.

I haven't broken into anything, except maybe the deep fields of mediocrity.

I started a comic fanzine. After reaching the peaks in the realm of British comic fanzines (still a step or two short of King Of The World) a distribution company that wanted to get into publishing hired me and my mag, to launch a comic line. I think the principle of doing it on a small level (whatever level you have access to) and if you are good at it you will make progress is probably a pretty common pattern.

The Hollywood way- Sex

ah, of course. Do you want to hear about my romps* on hotel beds with Alan Moore and Bryan Talbot?

*possibly not an entirely appropriate word for smoking joints with them. Alan had a half pint of pernaud and (his words, shouted across the hotel bar) "thousands and thousands of drugs" and passed out.

Through the garden gate. It was open.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I broke in with a crowbar and a revolver.

Not a sponge and a rusty spanner?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

If I wait for an invite, I'm not likely to get in am I?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate you all.

Nepotism. And by meeting my deadlines.

My brother convinced them it was a good idea to take in some summer students as cheap labour for low risk projects. So last summer they took three of us in, two of us as programmers (one C++ and one JAVA) and business analyst. Me and the BA were offered jobs back, the Java programmer was the son of the SVP's neighbour and a complete waste. This year we hired two more both of whom worked out. Its cheap labour and a good way to keep the office looking younger.
