do you swear much? or at all?

i do, i find swear words quite a useful form of expression at times, though i do find swearing distasteful in some instances ie; yelling out the window at children " get the fuck inside you little etc etc " or inappropriate ie: giving a speech to the local 'country womens league' or whatever.
some words i used to think of as pretty awful, and i would get all feisty if someone used them in my presence, but i have sort of gotten over it now, i think. i depends on the forum really.

donna (donna), Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear quite a bit, I think, but I try to temper it according to the audience (not that I give lots of speeches to the Women's Institute). The only word I eschew as a swear word is cunt - I only use it in the sexual realm.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

YES! i was going to start a thread on this. Like, i always get the impression that i'm breaking the fucking netiquette in here by 'cursing' or whatever. i was looking on an Eminem forum the other day and if you 'curse' then yr post gets deleted. But i find the word 'fuck' fundamental in expressing certain feelings. Maybe it's an english thang.

SeanF, Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

(i'm looking at that "chew" in Martin's "eschew" and counting down to Dan Perry's arrival)

jones (actual), Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "motherfucking cocksucking asshole bastard" far, Far, FAR more frequently than I ever say it. Because my posts are an extention of my thought processes, they are peppered far more liberally with off-color words than my speech.

When I do swear (in the flesh), it's most likely to be with the expletive: shit! A word which many do not even consider to be a swear word anymore, but my mother did, so it works for me.

ragnfild (ragnfild), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

haha banning swearing in an Eminem forum is particularly funny!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The only time I only use cuss words is for comedic effect. Like "What the FUCK were you thinking?" inserted at the right time. I don't use them otherwise because it would lessen the impact of times I do use them.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The only word I eschew as a swear word is cunt

But don't you feel it carries a phonetic transcendence that disassociates from gender-specific offensiveness?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i swear. by the moon and the stars and the sky.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be there (motherfucker)

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I hardly ever swear, but then there are days when I get so fed up I end up in a near Tourette's like state.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a problem with swearing and will do it when it feels right, but I notice how little I actually resort to it when I'm around chronic swearers.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm a total fuckin potty mouth

jayne (jayne), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I once heard a man in Clissold Park call an 8 year old girl (his daughter, I assumed) a cunt, which was simulataneously shocking and the funniest thing ever.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes. But, I try not to.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck no!

angelo (angelo), Sunday, 20 October 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i swear all the fucking time, but i only notice when i'm around children; i do my best to restrain myself, but i inevitably find the odd "fucking cocksucker" sneaking out. the look that parents give you when that happens = not nice.

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 20 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Rather too often. Trying to cut down, not doing fantastically...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 20 October 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Not gratuitously, but I do swear a little.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear way more online then in real life. I think that means I am trying to put up a cool guise. (Pretending to be cool while posting to an internet message board is a total fucking contradiction.)

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool perspectives: I was at a comic convention a few years ago. One friend commented that there were more cool people at the event than in past years. Another said that there were, as usual, no genuinely cool people there - "Really cool people don't even know things like this exist." Does this also apply to ILX?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I stumbled upon ILX by googling "coolest place in the whole world" or something similar. So there.

And no, I don't like swearing. My mother always used to say that people who swore were just too lazy to think of anything more effective to say. She may have had a point (or she may have just been an old smarty-pants), but in any case it's rubbed off on me and the worst I will usually come out with is the occasional "Oh God!"

C J (C J), Sunday, 20 October 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I certainly didn't mean that to insult anyone. It's a rare FAP where I'm not the least cool person there (i.e. no one else is a white male in his forties wearing a suit).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i never swear, my mother washed my mouth out with soap if i said darn as a child. listening to someone swear makes me think that someone is stupid because it is such a reflexive act, no thought put into what they are saying. it's also poor to hear girls swear, i suppose i am a chauvinist.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, i just realized that i stopped swearing. i used to do it constantly, and now it only slips out once in awhile, i must've subconsciously stopped in my endeavors to become more victorian.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

jennifer love hewitt doesn't swear either.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes I call people cock knockers and tell them to stop fucking my shit up, but i say it in an angelic voice.

rainy (rainy), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I try not to, but since I've moved back to NY I find myself thinking in swear words more often -- not in an angry way; it just feels like part of the dialect.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Swearing should be like salt. It should be used sparingly and only when necessary.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 21 October 2002 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with your first sentence, sound of jim.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 October 2002 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

its life, jim, but not as we know it.

donna (donna), Monday, 21 October 2002 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm salty

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 21 October 2002 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

constantly, yes

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 21 October 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Like a sailor

Miss Laura, Monday, 21 October 2002 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

swear constantly, don't even notice i'm doing it half the time

H (Heruy), Monday, 21 October 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Swearing is not a thing done in laziness or by stupid people, it is using the language to its' full extent.
I like swearing.
I swear a lot, loudly.

simon (simon), Monday, 21 October 2002 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I say f*ck and b**tard quite frequently but I absolutely can’t stand hearing derogatory words for female genitalia and I hate it even more when females use them – makes me wince. Yuk.

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 21 October 2002 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't swear that much until last few years. Learned to use some goodies after I got seperated from my now ex-wife, and have allowed 'fucking...' to become more common since finding a dear friend that does seem to use it quite often. You know what they say... "you emulate the ones you admire most".

Perry Bernard (panterus), Monday, 21 October 2002 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It's one of the best things about being an adult.
Working for a living/death/taxes = inevitable. pure shit.
Relationships = win some/lose some.
Swearing = who can stop you? express yourself.

I swear all the time whether with mates or with my dad. I used to be terrified of doing it but then it just felt so unnatural to leave pauses during my rants because I had to replace 'fucking' with 'blasted' or something. I don't use the 'c' word with him much though. I just do what feels natural.
We're both adults so what's the big deal? Respect? Deference? No issue. Swear words do not equal rude. Being a toady little cocksucker telling people what I think I want to hear rather than what I really think ... hmm, tough choice between that and the odd swear word.

Is it a bad habit? I don't think so. Constantly being told which words I am and am not allowed to use is far more irritating/offensive IMHO.
The whole argument that it shows limited vocabulary etc his pure shit. Ever heard James Ellroy speak? Legendary.

Android (Android Elvis), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear quite a lot. There are no limitations on swearing on ILX though people do it at their own risk - certain types of arguers take any minorly derogatory language as some kind of proof that the user has 'lost' and get awful uppity about it. I swear much less in writing.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

All the fucking time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

As needed. Sometimes that's quite a lot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't need a reason to swear - I just tend to do it the appropriate amount depending on who I'm around - but I enjoy swearing particularly to spite people who think it's a sign of stupidity, inarticulacy, or anything else of the sort.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(Let's pretend I made a joke about chewing cunt and move on.)

(Wait, now I can't; I'm obsessed with the image of gnoshing on a gash.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

what about mingemunching?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Beaver-biting!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

otter's pocket?

david h (david h), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Bwahaha. 'Otter's pocket' is so woodland-folk cutesy. 'Squirrel's sac(k)' is even more charming for gentlemen. On the other hand, this isn't swearing, just funny.

Profanity is great, although I'm trying not indulge to at work as there's a rabidly-enforced swear box. Earlier there were subvocalised 'fucketty-fucks' a-plenty as I was struggling with formatting a document. Riled I most certainly was.

"it's also poor to hear girls swear, i suppose i am a chauvinist.
-- keith"

Jeez, imagine if I was a real lady and never swore. I bet I'd have a nice husband and four cherubic children by now. Yum yum. Meanwhile, back at the reality ranch...

Oh! Best catch-all expletive phrase: "BUGGERY TIT-WANK!" Anatomically interesting and v. satisfying to erupt with.
