Former L.A. Dodgers teammates skipper their wild card teams in an all-Cali series. What do you think so far?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The atmosphere here is pretty wound up. I think a lot of people are still surprised they are where they are! But they've loving every minute of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Angels are the more appealing team. They have that whole scrappy underdog vibe. And even though they're a bit of a bandwagon team for their suddenly very supportive fans, I'll be rooting for them as I'm rooting against the smug and pompous Giants. If the Angels can come back tonight (4-3 in bot 6), they'll be in good shape. None of the Giant's pitching other then Schmidt was that impressive in the LCS.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Do people in OC drive around with little Angels flags on their cars?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

God I hate those little plastic inflatable bats or rally batons or whatever they are. And what is that rhythm?? It's in no time signature I am familiar with.

Brad Fullmer's the only thing that's interested me so far.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"thunder sticks"

Tim McCarver is soooo annoying.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Brad Fullmer's the only thing that's interested me so far.

Why? Because he's so obviously on steroids?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, you and steroids. Next you'll tell me that Sosa & Bonds are on 'roids, c'mon.

By the way, it might improve your interest in the game if you sing the Mr. Potato Head jingle whenever Barry Bonds is @ the plate, or on screen for that matter.

And, Tracer, surely Ben Weber is much more interesting than Fullmer (or Erstad, his less interesting twin brother).

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 20 October 2002 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

not Sammy!

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

dave are you suggesting creepy people are inherently more interesting? (nb I may not be disputing this)

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 20 October 2002 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this another one of those silly repackaged compilations? Just get 'Grotesque' man.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

STOP PREEMPTING MY DAILY TELEVISION REGIMINE YOU BASTARDS.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 20 October 2002 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Alls I'm saying is that a guy stereotypically resembling the sort you find on a sewer grate nursing a paper-bagged bottle of Mad Dog while sitting solemnly underneath last week's Times throwing fastballs in the low 90s while wearing Bono glasses could be deemed interesting.

Of course, the most interesting player in this series is Tsuyoshi Shinjo.

Felicity is blinded by her Cubbie love to see The Truth About Sammy (starring Leslie-Ann Warren and Richard Roundtree).

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 20 October 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Truth About Sammy:

Milwaukee(AP)-- Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa hit a monstrous 1630 ft. home run in the All-Star Home Run Derby Tuesday night. It was the longest of Sosa's 32 home runs on the night, 7 of which went over 850 feet. "Yeah, I guess there was some good wind tonight," said Sosa. "But I really feel like my hard work is paying off. I work hard, I really, really do."

Sosa declined to comment on charges he has been taking performance enhancing drugs. He also declined to comment on the incident with a SI reporter who asked Sosa to take a drug test to prove he was clean. "Why should I have to prove anything?", asked Sosa, who then stepped to the plate and decapitated a spectator with a foul ball down the third base line. " I got nuthin' to prove to you, I'm clean."

Sosa then went into an unexplained rage and hurled home plate into the stands while screaming "HULK MAD!!! LEAVE HULK ALONE!!!"

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

explanation for Sosa-Hulk: Jim Rose is probably asking the questions

the reason Brad Fullmer rocks is because he's a composite of two baseball archetypes mostly lacking in this Series: the psycho and the gamer. like you'd grafted Jimmy Piersall onto Jim Thome and given him a tiny pin-head.

NB1: Kenny Lofton will make a play during this series that turns the game around for the Angels. mark my words. the guy is a playoff wonder.

NB2: could Fox have come up with a more deadeningly leaden commentator combo if they'd tried? where's Singleton?? fuck, i'd take Bob Uecker at this point.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 October 2002 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Josh, you are truly a courtesan's courtesan.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

NB2: I don't mind TIm McCarver so much. He explains baseball things to the uninitiated and has some good stories about catching Gibby. Joe Buck is a total dud.

What I like about this year's all-wild card Series is that it shows, in baseball, any team can win on any given day. Career bullpenners are going to make the difference, which I love, given my subscription to Teen Set-Up Guy Beat Magazine. Poor Witasick is going to get a bad rep if has to mop up this game like he did in Game 6 last year.

I get an ulcer whenever they mention Schoeneweis. When is Mike Sciosia going to notice that when his left-handed quack isn't throwing beachballs, he's issuing walks to the lefties he supposed to get out? They could get Chone Figgins to do that.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

pls post lyrics to mr potato head jingle thx

Josh (Josh), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find them! One line is "Mr. Potato Head and his bucket of fun!", but that's all I can recall / sing, and my friend does a better job singing it, anyway.

And did you SEE that ball he hit?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

how many times did fox have to show salmon saying "i've never seen a ball hit that hard"

JAYsus

go angels.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

And did you SEE that ball he hit?

mmm hmm.

I nominate future sports trivia answer Francisco Rodriguez as the most interesting player of the Series so far.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Fox has the uncanny ability of running things into the ground for the sake of our MTV era.

That said, I wonder if that ball has come down yet.

Reason #462 to hate Lofton: he is a terrible outfielder.

We need more K-Rod vs. Barry.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe K-Rod has just tied Randy Johnson for most postseason wins.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lofton used to be good, seriously - all y'all old farts remember the good old days when he'd use those point-guard legs of his to throw himself over the center field wall in Jacobs Field to take away homer after homer after homer. Right? Or has he always been a flashy disaster?

Worst development in baseball the last ten years - the first initial-truncated last name nickname. It's lazy, and it sounds like asscrap. It ONLY works with Kenyon Martin, and that's where is should die.

Joe Buck is a beautiful broadcaster - I heart his deadpan ways. (I was weaned on Sean McDonough, in case you were wondering.) Unfortunately, McCarver's sub-Walken tendencies take away from Buck's schtick, and you can get anyone with half a brain & a working tongue (that is, NOT Steve Lyons) to 'splain baseball fundamentals (esp. given 4 hours), so McC's tendency to talk to the viewing audience like a group of drooling 4th graders is a wee bit grating. Any of you baseball noobies chafing under Mr. McCarver's tutelage?

Plus I can't escape the self-important bastard - he's doing Mets games, he's doing Yankee games, he's doing Fox games, god I just want some peace IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? Were it not for Ken Singleton & Jim Kaat being 1/56th of the Yankees broadcasting corp, I would die. Seriously.

D-Rap (popshots75`), Monday, 21 October 2002 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Buck is a hack. McCarver is like some kind of evil scarecrow.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 21 October 2002 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Lighten up, D-Rap, you old fart. Kenny Lofton was a good pickup, but he is a bit overrated now. Sometimes his running speed seems like a liability for him on defense.

I was weaned on Jack Brickhouse, in case you were wondering.

One thing I'll say for Joe Buck is that he will totally commit to his calling errors in his deadpan manner ("That's the game. . . . . . . . . [long, long pause] . . . . Giants coming up in the ninth").

All the good analysts seem to be under contract to ESPN. Vin Scully would be a dream; too bad FOX probably doesn't think he's pretty enough anymore. The only other Fox analysts I know well are Rex Hudler (Angels), Dave Ott and Joe Carter (Cubs) and they are uniformly awful. Given the four, who would you prefer? You can always turn on ESPN radio.

Steve Stone is coming back for the Cubs next year. It's a good thing.

Looking forward to Livan Hernandez slugfest on Tuesday.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wow...

Livan Hernandez slugfest on Tuesday.

yes, that Livan is indeed a slugger. ^_^

if y'all want to hear the game called well, check out the KNBR broadcast with mike krukow and duane kuiper.

lotsa angels fans here on the ilx (no surprise what with the stranglehold of the media empire shaping most of y'all's listening habits). y'all can look forwared to eternal viewings of a rally monkey animated feature in your fiery hell. danny elfman soundtrack.

can't wait to see how the angels and all their brand new fans (if danny devito roots for your team, you are indeed fucked) come to pac bell where salmon's OC homers wouldn't clear the left field warning track in this musty bay air.

after all that pre-WS shit that percival talked it gave me great pleasure to see him the look on his face ("mommy mommy, poopy pants") after serving that fastball up to BB.

gygax!, Monday, 21 October 2002 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Rex the wonderdog was a fun player to watch back in the day. The old KMOX combo of Jack and the frequently intoxicated Mike Shannon is a pair I'll miss. (Once going into the 11th, Shannon announced the game was going into extra innings.)

Livan is a porker.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 21 October 2002 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, I hope to God the Giants don't win the World Series. Listening to the smug fuckers in this town talk smack for the next year is going be nearly intolerable. If one lived anywhere else I could sort of see rooting for whomever, but rooting for a hometeam seems like such a painful overcompensatory attempt to "belong" (like nationalism on a local, but equally ignorant level) that I can only laff when I see those "oh look at me I'm so fucking different" hipsters rallying around their "team" right alongside the jocks who used to pants them in high school.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 21 October 2002 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(Note: ROOTING for the Yankees--regardless of wherever you actually live--is WORSE than rooting for a hometeam and almost on par with having the last name of Bush.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ but that was a beautiful baseball game.

J0hn Darn1ell3, Monday, 21 October 2002 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If the Yankees played the Giants I'd be rooting for the Yankees.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The TV broadcast is not even close to synched up to the ESPN radio broadcast (I don't know about KNBR, those clowns are just as intolerable to me as Buck/McCarver). I was watching the Twins/Angels series with the SAP button -- the spanish announcers -- which was far better. I haven't tried this with the world series but I assume it will work.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

dud, because the Red Sox aren't in it. But what else is new. Glad to see the Angels in it. What a team! They encompass everything that a great team should be.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ but that was a beautiful baseball game.

You should see the papers around here this morning. I think the OC Register is going to explode from sheer delight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i have consulted the oracle of delphi...

if rueter gets the win tonight, giants are world champions.

gygax!, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax is spot-on re: the Kuiper / Krukow tandem. (Kris is k-kranky.)I convinced my roomy that we NEEDED the Extra Ticket MLB baseball package (wherein 35+ games per week across our great nation are brought to you in all their digital beauty), and I LOVED watching Giants games when those two were @ the mic. The only redeemable things about Fox Sports baseball broadcasts (i.e. 90% of cable-broadcasted baseball) are Kuiper, Krukow, and Vin Scully doing the work of TWO people while making it seem as if the last thing a baseball broadcast needs is a color guy (which I find to be the case more often than not). The fact that Scully can just talk and talk and talk w/out rambling while ALSO calling the Dodgers on their more boneheaded moments ... it makes me wonder how a sub-literate like Rex Hudler finagled his way into the broadcast booth. ("He's a good healer," said Rex one Sunday - well thanks for THAT bit of wisdom, Mr. H. Llearn that after hitting the wall in Wrigley for the 67th time, did ya?)

The Rangers' Fox Sports play-by-play guy is pretty good, too. Same goes for any non-Carey Braves announcer. The rest of the Fox Sports posse can get eaten by Kruk, Farr, and Arnold for all I care. (I bitch because I care.)

Felicity, re: the McDonough comment (in case you were wondering), I was just trying to say that Sean's deadpan sarcasm during my nascent days as a Red Sox baseball fanny make it easier for me to appreciate Senor Buck's low-level flights of fancy. I wasn't trying to one-up or anything, madam. And I'm an OLD FART!!!!!! Well, that's half-right. (Who's Jack Brickhouse?)

I have dreams of Sean McD. coming back to do nationally-televised games, like he did when CBS had the baseball contract. McDonough's become so bitter and caustic, however, that I don't think the national audience could handle it anymore. (Not that I blame him - YOU try being a Red Sox broadcaster for 15+ years and see where your psyche ends up.) Especially if the Indians make the playoffs anytime soon - he STILL refers to catcher Einar Diaz as a "Hall of Famer" after an incident involving the light-hitting Mr. Diaz, Mr. Pedro Martinez, an "inside pitch", and some Diaz umbrage that took place FOUR YEARS AGO. He needs a good colonic and a lollipop stat.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm . . . Extra Ticket

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm watching now, that weber guy for the angels is a serious spaz.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 24 October 2002 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Fox's coverage is just terrible. They used to be the best. Remember all the cool sound design they brought? Mics in the bases, that kind of thing. But they've slipped. Now they can't even work the mixing board. Baby Bell singles to center, bringing in Snow - one of the more dramatic moments in this Series, given where they're playing and the lateness of the game. The telephoto shots of the dugout high-fives are jiggly as hell from the fans literally rocking the place - great. But the sound for the crowd is mixed down to almost nothing! As if it were a game situation, where we needed to hear the commentary! If we ever needed to hear anything these two sad sacks in the booth have to say, we certainly don't need to now - and to their credit they don't talk too much here - but the drama of the moment, the swelling of the crowd rejoining the fight, is lost - squelched out of existence.

This is turning into an interesting Series. I didn't know too much about these teams before and though I'm certain the way I perceive them has been subliminally channelled through what all the pundits say to a certain extent, they have become v. differentiated for me. The Giants are the more imperfect team, more human. Bonds is such a tragic figure that it seems impossible that they could win. But I've found myself rooting for him somehow, and his team. The Angels really are like machines made to play baseball - all focus, all strength.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 October 2002 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How about that catch by K-LAW???

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 October 2002 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

with kent and santiago batting .188 and .176 respectively in the world series...

forget the horrible starting pitching, this is why the Giants lost games 2 and 3.

if the Angels pitched to Barry more often than once or twice a game, this series would be over... at the very least, one of these guys needs to step it up and either put the Angels in a position where they HAVE to pitch to Bonds, or let them walk them and then make them pay. Santiago's TWO bases loaded double plays were completely heart-breaking.

gygax!, Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and wrt: lofton...

his waving off of bonds on the sac fly was a joke. bonds has the better arm not to mention the better shot at throwing him off being a lefty coming toward center fielding the fly. (think about it, i just relived the motions in my kitchen).

God I hate those little plastic inflatable bats or rally batons or whatever they are. And what is that rhythm?? It's in no time signature I am familiar with.

Obviously the crowd digs on IDM riddims.

Let me second the props to Mike Krukow. Absolutely deserves national spotlight -- he may be an irrepressible homer (not that I care one iota), but he's the funniest and most insightful 'sucker I've heard in ages (not saying much though).

Grab some pine, meat! &c

Leee (Leee), Friday, 25 October 2002 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Then they'll have NINE starters and still no one with a clue as to how to pitch in the 8th.

ch. (synkro), Friday, 25 October 2002 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

haha actually I like this idea of steinbrenner acquiring EVERYONE until there's no teams left except the yankees and they just turn out to play catch and shag flies 162 days a year and clemens gets so fat that he has to rub the babe's head for exercise.

ch. (synkro), Friday, 25 October 2002 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

awww, bc, don't worry, i'm sure the yankees will be back soon. ;-)

no way no way no way was that a boring series. even in the last inning there was some suspense, or at least more than we'd seen before in the postseason with percival on the mound.

dogpiles: S/D The Twins in 87 stand out in my mind.

ch. (synkro), Monday, 28 October 2002 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Putting the bat in the hands of Tom Goodwin & Tsuyoshi Shinjo w/ important runners on base = the Giants were destined to lose OR Dusty Baker was saying goodbye to team owner Peter McGowan (sic) a little earlier than most expected.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 October 2002 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but David, Shinjo is a "high fastball hitter" so it made perfect sense! (thx Joe Buck)

i'm disappointed they didn't show the inevitable royal rumble in the sf clubhouse. TS: Jeff Kent vs. Livan Hernandez's kid.

ch. (synkro), Monday, 28 October 2002 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Game 7 was the most boring game of the series, hands down. Shame Kirk Reuter's gem in relief was completely worthless thanks to Livan.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 28 October 2002 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean "high" as in "on a batting tee", right, Chad?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 October 2002 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

David R. brings up shinjo and goodwin....

what about DH-ing pedro feliz?

gygax!, Monday, 28 October 2002 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I much preferred game 5's 16-4 rout. That was *so* exciting. Where as last night's boring game only had the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning of the seventh game of the World Series. And, oh no, the game didn't last 4 hours!

The Giants bench was what, 0 for 93? Maybe they shoulda given a bat to Dusty's kid. We know he can find home plate at least.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Giants' bench was awful. Shinjo, Goodwin, Feliz, Shawon Dunston, a back-up catcher, and ...? I read the bench (including DH stints) went 3 for 23 during the series, with 3 RBIs, and this includes Dunston's HR in Game 6. Where the hell was Damon Minor? What, do you not want a lefty slugger on your bench? Or would you rather pinch-hit for a capable 25-HR right fielder type with a poor, poor, poor man's Otis Nixon?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

When the top half of the 8th ended, I knew it was over. Even when Lofton was up I knew there was no chance. Untimely non-hitting last night. Agreed on the Giants bench. I mean, Shinjo's yr fucking clutch hitter??? Come on Dusty!

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

seeing the giants kids crying broke my heart. but then I saw an angels kid crying and I was just confused. somehow I find myself unable to attribute tears of joy to little kids. maybe it was just loud and scared him.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 28 October 2002 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

How many times do I have to tell you, Josh? crying/baseball = 0

Darren Baker might have time to turn his career around but the crying is probably good practice in case Dusty heads to the Cubs.

I find it pleasingly dramatic when the college basketball cheerleaders cry and wring their hands when their teams are eliminated from the NCAA tournament. They're like the chorus in a Greek tragedy.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it's different from the praying way, ally. but whatever. everyone tonight looked like they were praying, so I give up.

That's what people do at sporting events, "God hates your team and that's why you lost, Satanic bastards" etc. No hoping, just praying to an evil, sports-avenging God.

Anyway I thought it was mean to show the little kid crying so much.

World Series baseball is so great. Loved seeing the Los Angelenos biting their nails in the ninth inning last night. Baseball is so cruel in that you never know when the game is over, you can never relax. Have to say, these are two of the most formidable teams I’ve seen in the Series in years.

What a time capsule. SF Giants fans in shambles. Glad things worked out for them a bit.

Shades of the Yankees being down 2-0 in 2001 against the Dbacks.

calstars, Sunday, 27 October 2024 22:27 (eleven months ago)

I have not known any UK Yanks fans. I have known UK Mets fans. Yanks = Man U.

As an example, the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool F.C., and the NHL hockey team Pittsbugh Penguins are all owned by the Fenway Sports Group. Aiui (happy to be corrected here) there is/was no salary cap in Premier League or in MLB so supporting the Red Sox could benefit Liverpool and vice versa if it leads to financial success for that team.

Fenway also have some common ownership with Rousch Fenway Racing in NASCAR which was a roundabout way for my brother (when he became disenchanted with auto racing and his favorite driver retired) to transfer his main sports interest to Liverpool.

WHERE IT REMAINS lol
