I wonder if the problem a lot of Gen X'ers have with Jar Jar Binks is because Yoda starts off annoying ("Away put your weapon! I mean you no harm!"), but then turns into a cool nuanced character, while Jar Jar starts off annoying but stays annoying in the face of the audience's expectations.
