Red Simpson, a pioneer of the “Bakersfield sound” and an icon in the sub-genre of country trucking songs, has died unexpectedly. He was 81.
According to the Bakersfield Californian, Simpson had suffered a heart attack on Dec. 18, after returning from a tour. Family friend Gene Thome tells the paper, “He seemed to be doing better,” but on Friday night (Jan. 8), Simpson went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

http://www.post-gazette.com/news/obituaries/2016/01/09/Soul-legend-Otis-Clay-dies-at-73/stories/201601090143

Mr. Clay, a 2013 inductee to the Blues Hall of Fame, grew up in the '40s in the small Mississippi town of Waxhaw, singing in church and hearing blues and soul on the radio.

In the late '50s he sang in Chicago gospel groups, and in 1962 split off with his first secular soul songs. He had his first R&B hit in 1967 with "That's How It Is (When You're in Love)" and a pop hit in 1968 with a cover of Sir Douglas Quintet's "She's About a Mover."

In 1972, he moved to Hi Records (home of Al Green) and released "Trying to Live My Life Without You," produced by Willie Mitchell, the man behind the Green hits. The song later became a No. 5 hit for Bob Seger.

Those early albums made him a popular touring attraction in Europe and Japan, where he recorded a number of live albums. He was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

In recent years, he recorded for Bullseye Blues and he recorded a gospel album in 2007 called “Walk a Mile in My Shoes.”

polyphonic, Thursday, 14 January 2016 02:00 (nine years ago)

Really weird series of events: I posted "Va Va Va Voom" on a friend's FB wall Sunday morning, not because I knew Smiley had died (I didn't...actually, I thought he'd been dead for a few years, and that's why someone made a documentary about him), but because I'd finally burned his album onto a CD after it had sat on my hard drive for a year-plus and I thought he might like the song. Someone pointed his death out to me in a comment, then later that day news of Bowie's death.

Debbie Reynolds was 84 and just experienced the massive trauma of her child dying before her, after 48 hours or so of her life hanging in the balance. This isn't 2016 at work, just the tragic result of massive emotional strain on someone who was perhaps physically fragile to begin with. My grandmother was a decade or so younger than Debbie when my dad died, and I was seriously worried the shock and strain would kill her.

There shouldn't be a thread for Dennis Perrin tweets (stevie), Thursday, 29 December 2016 07:56 (eight years ago)

This isn't complete just yet (sadly) but it's something I've been putting together for some time: a playlist populated by songs from artists who have passed in 2016. I'll be adding and rearranging; would welcome input on anyone I've missed or necessary tracks for inclusion.

Thankful for the Fallen: A Playlist of Those Lost to 2016

Colonel Abrams also died this year, I think you missed him? I'd add at least "Trapped" and "I'm Not Gonna Let" from him to the list.

Also, since I see you have Päivi Paunu on the list, an even more important Finnish musician who died this year was Lasse Mårtenson. Here's a few suggestions for his essential songs:

- "Laiskotellen" (the Finnish entry to the 1964 Eurovision song contest)
- The theme from the TV series "Myrskyluodon Maija" (his best-known composition)
- "Hän on mennyt vuorten taa" (incredible folk duet with Cay Karlsson)

Awful year for classical music too with Boulez, Maxwell Davies, Harnoncourt, Marriner, etc all going. The tenor Johan Botha as well.

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds is giving me eerie flashbacks to this summer, when my grandma and her sister and her brother-in-law all died one after another within a span of about four days. Shit like that makes everything feel so fragile. Guh.

My mom, my wife and I just went through the long list of notable deaths, and, man, the number of people who meant something to me. Just horrifying. So many names I'm ashamed I'd already forgotten were this year. Alan Rickman, Harper Lee ... Curtis Hanson, Kenny Baker ... Alan Vega, Anton Yelchin ... Bernie Worrell, Bill Cunningham ... Tony Conrad, Garry Shandling ...
