I don't know if she was incredible, but she was a real presence. We need Eric H for ILE gays Network love. She tried hard to humanize Joan Crawford, failed and turned her into a monster, and it worked anyway. My rundown:

No mention of Don Juan Demarco?

Barfly best 'late' performance i've seen for sure.

she's a delicious villain in the Lester Musketeers too.

A Place for Lovers directed by De Sica and with Mastroianni? Probably soapy and ridiculous but I want to see it for the fashions if nothing else

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 January 2016 18:39 (nine years ago)

she's the nicest of many nice things to look at in The Thomas Crown Affair

Brad C., Thursday, 14 January 2016 18:39 (nine years ago)

Certainly an essential part of the weirdness in Kusturica's Arizona Dream. Def curious to see what she did opposite George C Scott in Okl Crude, which was often on TV when i was a kid, and with Stacy Keach in "Doc," which seems hard to locate.

Watched Little Big Man again over the weekend cuz of this revive. It's more or less an overtly comic picaresque, albeit one with frequent and abundant detours into a kind of grim reevaluation of western tropes particularly in regard to the racist genocide of native Americans, which is repeatedly witnessed with wide-eyed horror by proto-Dances With Wolves protagonist. Dunaway's appearances bookend the film and she does fine with a not particularly nuanced role. The comedy is often goofy and obvious, which is a strange contrast to all the other grim shit that happens, making for something that veers wildly in tone. No idea how this was received at the time.

The Eyes of Laura Mars is excellent giallo, I should have voted for it instead of Chinatown

I have no idea. I distinctly remember seeing the back half of this film on TV as a teenager and thinking it was somehow a more serious revisionist western (in the vein of Peckinpah) than it actually is. It's really more like a dopey Dickens story with the massacre of Native Americans/Old West as a backdrop.

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 January 2016 19:31 (nine years ago)

Highly recommend the novel. Have read it several times. I believe Film Forum programmer Mike M. is also a big fan.

movies i saw in high school, during class, under state coercion: little big man, the longest day, apocalypse now (conrad unit), spartacus (ancient greek unit -- teacher recognized his error about 20 minutes in but had no backup so we went the distance), the de niro/branagh frankenstein, the fishburne/branagh othello, the washington/branagh much ado, all quiet on the western front, sleepy hollow, finding forrester, anne of the thousand days, remember the titans (many times), stand and deliver...

one year passes...

Saw a damn near pristine 35mm print yesterday of Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970), written by Carole Eastman (same year she did Five Easy Pieces) and the first feature directed by Jerry Schatzberg, who'd been a big-deal fashion fotog (and snapped the cover shot of Blonde on Blonde) in the '60s. The quick summary is "breakdown of a neurotic fashion model," with lots of elliptical nouvelle vague-style editing and structure, but Dunaway goes to extremes I haven't often seen from her. Lots of humor too, which feels authentic since J.S. knew that world (and gave Eastman interview tapes he'd made with an ex-model upon which to base the script).

Schatzberg (who is 90!) did a Q&A after. Dunaway had committed to the film while they were having a romance, which had ended by the time the cameras rolled (she left him for Mastroianni). Asked if it was a "sober" or partying set, Schatzberg said "I don't know if you can call any set with Faye on it sober." The film was nearly shelved by Universal, but French acclaim partly saved it.

there's no video release available in the US, but what looks to be an uncut version is on YouTube.

Eyes of Laura Mars: she's already doing Joan Crawford here. The movie revels in the glitz and sleaze of '78 NYC, which saves it (mostly) from the shabby serial-killer plot.

I wonder how many people who see that movie fail to ID the killer. It seemed disappointingly obvious on a recent viewing (though maybe I was recalling it from a viewing decades earlier)

Josefa, Monday, 14 January 2019 22:08 (six years ago)

I thought it was too obvious for them to do.

two years pass...

I guess the location cinematography looks okay, but god the performances are embarrassing in The Eyes of Laura Mars. One of Kael's more inexplicable enthusiasms (going to look up her review).

I wonder how many people who see that movie fail to ID the killer.

Well, they work really hard to make you think it's one character; I was sitting there going back and forth between "either this is so heavy-handedly obvious it has to be someone else" and "they're doing a double-reverse; the obviousness is meant to deflect me so I'll be surprised when it actually is him." But even having seen it once years ago, I failed to ID the killer. Also failed to decide if Jones, Auberjonois, or Julia gave the worst performance. Dunaway and Dourif were only intermittently awful.

clemenza, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 02:35 (four years ago)

Read Kael's review, and I really felt the exasperation people can have with her. She goes on about some perceived resistance to the film because it unnerves us, and we like everything neat and tidy. Didn't unnerve me at all--it's just a bad film. (I might be wrong, but I think she had some degree of friendship with Irvin Kershner...I'd have to check that; bad idea if I'm remembering right.)

There might be a poll for the most lurid late-'70s thriller: Laura Mars, Lipstick, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Hardcore, Cruising, Star '80 if you move ahead a year.

clemenza, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 14:01 (four years ago)

six months pass...

Oh dear, I have to disagree with Dr Morbius about Puzzle of a Downfall Child, Dunaway is so so bad in this. She seems to… think that… putting random… pauses between… her… words equals… naturalistic acting, when it actually makes her sound anything but natural. The script is partly to blame, which is surprising considering it’s the same screenwriter who did Five Easy Pieces, a film that looks better every time I see it.
