1. there is no undercut, that shit is garbage. it's all of my scapula-length hair in a bun so that I get to have a visible jawline again for a minute without the commitment of cutting it

2. fucking hell when men do things that used to be mainly the province of women do we really have to put some needless masculine modifier on it? My hair is not in a fucking man-bun, it's in a bun, just like my grandma (though without the rolled up pantyhose to give it volume).

the disconnected undercut seemed to move through the classic metropolitan queer -> hipster -> 'i see young republicans who work in Big Law rocking this now' passage of style incredibly quickly. man-bun hasn't quite reached that final stage yet, has it?

semi-serious question: have trends like this always gone through this continuum so quickly? the whole 'workwear and beards' thing was actually an okay look for a few months until literally every bloke in London started sporting it, and then it just got embarrassing. does ubiquity settle in faster than it used to?

Trends are definitely speeding up.

Although I'm not a fan of the disconnected undercut or man bun, it is good to see a bit of variation from the ubiquitous shaved head of a few years ago.

i guess there's only so many ways to cut your hair, and if you want to make a statement/look hip without completely fucking up your life, these styles are the way to go for a lot of people.

Interestingly, I overheard people in my office the other day talking about someone and saying 'he's got a this huge beard and shaved sides. he looks just like a lumberjack!'. I guess hipster ubiquity doesn't really reach as far as Bristol. People still dress like they're from 1999 over here.

Yeah this is accurate in my experience. My criteria for accepting/appreciating a man bun seems to be the same for accepting/appreciating long hair on a man; namely, that the dude is attractive to begin with and can therefore pull off whatever hairstyle he chooses. But manbun > long hair worn long imo, on anyone. My current celebrity crush is sporting one and fuck he looks good.

couple of thoughts on man buns

1) it's not as annoying to me if the person genuinely has long hair. if the guy cuts his had short on the sides and leaves a little bit of length on the top for the sole purpose of wearing a bun, yeah, that's trying a little too hard
2) this is not a "hipster" thing. the vast majority of guys with buns, in my world of young people, are jocks and meatheads

yeah the disquieting thing about man-buns is that they convey chillness yet the bun-men aren't more chill than the average man

A lot of looks work if you're a really good looking guy. The key imo is a great hairline. If receding at all it doesn't work. Man bun def not a hipster thing in my experience as well.

i don't watch either of those shows religiously, i'm just saying in the brief bits i've seen of their current seasons, it seems like the 2016 model of "douchey reality show contestant you root against" tends to have a manbun.
