It seems like a real wildcard to me what a Trump presidency would actually be like, although I'm still not 100% convinced he's not just running as black ops for Clinton. He's so scattershot -- people like the Hitler comparison but I think Hitler had a bit more of a total ideology by the time he was on the eve of rising to power. Trump seems to just say whatever.

yeah there's no internal consistency which is why it's obv his followers aren't following him for his ideology outside of the whole "rah rah keep out foreigners/fuck Islam" rhetoric.

I also think Hitler was motivated by genuine anger about whatever he thought was wrong with Germany and the world, and Trump is just motivated by wanting power and a wild ride.

Where is the "laugh" option.

A Trump presidency would represent the metastasis of a slowly-encroaching American madness that's been threatening to drive me out of the country for a while.

I've been gathering materials to apply to Germany for naturalization (my grandfather became stateless during the Third Reich) so while I've never been to Germany I'd move there if it seemed like things were getting bad for the Jews under the Trump regime.

I really hope I'm not being naive, but the fact that there are polls showing Trump anywhere close to Clinton in a hypothetical general election just suggests to me that polling is getting worse and worse with the slow death of landlines. Plus you've had pretty much nonstop media coverage of Trump and Clinton relatively quiet by comparison,

Trump's got a passionate, active fanbase. He's got the growing mass shooter demographic locked down, and they're definitely not the stay at home types. Hillary, for me at least, it's like "guess I have to try and keep the psychos out of power again..." This is especially poignant after 8 years of GWB. So you've got idiocy/mania vs. grudging acceptance for a lot of people. Which polls from the latest primaries show: Republicans are seeing record turnout, and Democrats are seeing a turnout way lower than in recent elections. Doesn't look like a good scene, but I doubt we'll actually see a Trump presidency.

so some things have changed in my life beyond my moving to oregon. i don't believe in democracy anymore, for instance. i'm unpersuaded that elections have the power to define what gender i am, or what science is, or any of the things we apparently invest in democracy these days.

i did for a while consider not voting because of this. ultimately i am voting. for the wrong reasons, but i've done lots of things for the wrong reasons. i'm less invested in the outcome. i know the dogged insistence some people have that donald trump will win in 2020 upsets people, that we've all had to re-evaluate what our core beliefs are and we do it in different ways. the outcome in 2020, the outcome in two weeks, it matters, but at this point it doesn't matter in terms of what i believe, but only in how i go about living those beliefs.

i don't believe in elections, but i do believe in other things. i think it matters who we choose to talk to, and who we choose to listen to. i think it matters what we will tolerate and what we will excuse. if the structure of political power isn't ours, if the economy isn't ours, if the means of effective mass communication isn't ours, then we build invisible.

all i need to do is just continue staying alive. this is a struggle, but it is possible for now. for me that means ignoring what people are saying on twitter, staying the hell away from the monthly politics threads (which are wholly absorbed in the anguish of the present moment) for the most part, not listening to the polls, not thinking about what will happen in 2020, but knowing who i am and what i believe, and doing my best to live that.
