I love guinea pigs, but only ever had hamsters as pets while growing up, and so I must choose them by default, as they are nice little critters.

Guinea Pigs are the absolute best animals ever that look the same from the front as the back

My 8-year-old daughter wanted a guinea pig. I was hesitant, but it turns out that guinea pigs are pretty awesome.

They're pretty tidy as pets go, generally low-maintenance, and if you want to interact with them they're affectionate and funny.

Hamsters are naturally nocturnal. I know some people "reset" them to be active in daytime, when people are around, but imo that's kind of mean.

Hamsters are the same as guinea pigs in terms of their heads also being their bodies. That's the source of their greatness

can't argue with that

I had hamsters and they can be pretty evil, whereas guinea pigs seem a lot more like chill little guys.

If I could choose one rodent for a pet it would obviously be the capybara.

Obviously.

AM I thinking right that guinea pigs were like Aztec staple diet or was it another one of those Central American empires?
Don't remember hearing anything similar about Hamsters.

Aztecs mainly lived in what is now Mexico. Guinea pigs come from the Andes - mainly Peru.

People eat guinea pigs in South America. I remember when my cousin told me about this when I was like 9 and had a guinea pig. I cried and he felt bad, iirc

You may be thinking of the Incas, who definitely ate guinea pigs. As Treeship notes, modern Peruvians and Bolivians do eat them but not all the time, IIRC. I heard on "Nature" (FWIW) that a rural Peruvian house might have a dozen running around as tolerated pets, and they just eat one or two on special occasions.

Dude on the left is like "shit i totes missed the memo about bringing a pet." Dude on the right is kinda strangling that poor bird. Girl with the guinea pig is just chilling out, getting a portrait done, like you do.

Guinea pig is wondering why all these people have the same face.

Are those white, puffy masses along the bottom parts of their clothes or the tops of the heads of poodles?

Treeship, Thursday, 3 March 2016 00:54 (nine years ago)
