POLL: Best movie out of rateyourmusic.com's Top 50 of 2004

I thought this was a pretty decent year for movies, and this list was an okay summation of how cool it was...I mean, I'll probably never see Bill Bailey: Part Troll on purpose, but I still kind of wouldn't mind reading a halfway cool discussion on these movies.

I used the English version of these titles whenever possible, and am prepared to c k ear up any confusion that causes. Thus is probably not the furst of a series; I just thought tgere were a bunch of interesting movies here

I for the most part dont give a shit about the poll part (though if no one votes, my feelings will probably be hurt)

Nah it's just my hate for listyourmusic stuff, got no ish with talking bout movies, even if Shaun of the Dead is everything wrong with British blokes of a certain age

All over the zombie wombies

Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 12:17 (eight years ago) link

Surprised some of those are 12 years old tbh.

Thomas of Britain (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 12:17 (eight years ago) link

Yeah Shaun and Sideways are prib my two least favorite

Really I just need to put Tropical Malady, Nobody Knows, Howl, and 2046 on my Amazon queue rn (*already own Mysterious Skin)

i;m the worst poster e9er (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 12:32 (eight years ago) link

think I've got more to say about the films I hate on here than those I like. The Machinist is just appalling, sub-Nolan pish with the kind of banal non-twist that makes callow fanboys vote it onto lists like this

Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 12:44 (eight years ago) link

Bill Bailey: Part Troll

Slow year for movies, I assume?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 13:05 (eight years ago) link

Schizo list:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Before Sunset
Tropical Malady
Nobody Knows
3-Iron
The Consequences of Love
Head-On
2046
Kings and Queen
Mooladé

These are all p/good. I think I've seen Kings and Queen. 2046 was the end for Kar-Wai.

Might be DiG!

Dead Man's Shoes

i;m thinking about thos Beans (Michael B), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 13:23 (eight years ago) link

Head-On was my favorite of these I think. Some very good movies on this list (Pusher II is my favorite of the Pushers too IIRC).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 13:26 (eight years ago) link

Dead Man's Shoes, Innocence, Consequences of Love, The Incredibles, Primer, and Nobody Knows would be my picks. I'll throw Shaun of the Dead in there as well - the least boring zombie movie, though it might also be the most irritating by this point. It was good for a laugh, though. For those of us who like laughing.

Shaun of the Dead is pretty hard on Shaun in fairness. It would probably have gotten my vote if Kung Fu Hustle wasn't on there - virtuoso film makers at the top of their entertaining.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 13:33 (eight years ago) link

My ranking:

Before Sunset
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Mysterious Skin
The Incredibles
Kill Bill Vol. 2
Nobody Knows
Sideways

I still need to see: Tropical Malady, The White Diamond, Mooladé

Most glaring absence (especially considering the site): End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones

Tropical Malady

Shaun of the Dead is a disgrace to cinema

2046 was the end for Kar-Wai

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 17:31 (eight years ago) link

This is a difficult one. My heart would definitely vote differently to my head.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 17:33 (eight years ago) link

Collateral was really cool. Voting that over Eternal Sunshine or Kill Bill.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 17:55 (eight years ago) link

i might go with PUSHER II tbh, it's the best of the trilogy and is pretty powerful. great mads mikkelsen performance.

Kings and Queen is in the running.

Collateral, The Nomi Song, 2046, and Primer all excellent

Shaun of the Dead and Kung Fu Hustle are both great (the latter a class, the former is just a really good comfort food movie.)

i really like The Life Aquatic, it's kind of a mess but the kind that i enjoy.

Downfall is long past the point when it turned from a movie into a meme but i find it super compelling.

nomar, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:01 (eight years ago) link

Pretty good list, if weirdly erratic. At least enjoyed:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Shaun of the Dead
Howl's Moving Castle
Nobody Knows
3-Iron
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
2046 (though the drop from ItMfL is huge & disappointing)
The Incredibles
Kung Fu Hustle
Samaritan Girl
Primer
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Longtime watchlist residents:

Tropical Malady
The Taste of Tea
Survive Style 5+
Innocence

leet gentlemen's club (contenderizer), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:01 (eight years ago) link

Most of these are terrible. Out of the ones I've seen, Howl easily tops it.

(I quite like Bill Bailey tbh)

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:09 (eight years ago) link

It's embarrassing how few of these I've seen, but Innocence probably made the biggest impact on me, such a deeply unnerving film.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

Of all the films here that I would have said that I liked at the time, The Life Aquatic is the one I'm least likely to revisit, largely due to having grown tired of Anderson's quirks in the year's since. Collateral is one I should probably rewatch, though.

Had no idea that people had turned on Shaun of the Dead. Is it another Britisher thing I wouldn't understand?

Telephone Meatballs (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:20 (eight years ago) link

pretty sure there's no turn involved in my part

English-on-English hate is a perennial resource - sliced and processed into TV, Film, Music it makes up a significant fraction of cultural exports.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 10 March 2016 10:15 (eight years ago) link

I am not English and English cinema is mostly horrible.

Most people here are quite positive about the quality of television. Though not so much now, especially with the hipster HBO crowd.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 March 2016 10:30 (eight years ago) link

Yeah Im not English either, nor do I have to be to discern how obnoxious Shaun's sense of craft is

Okay, looking at a more comprehensive list of 2004 movies, the most glaring omission in this poll is I Heart Huckabees, which would've been my vote if it was available. That or Seed Of Chucky.

Anus The Untouchable (Old Lunch), Thursday, 10 March 2016 14:41 (eight years ago) link

fart fuckabees

Keks + Nuss (contenderizer), Thursday, 10 March 2016 14:57 (eight years ago) link

Todd Solondz's Palindromes came out on 2004, right? I liked that.

I haven't seen Shaun Of The Dead since it's original cinema release, I remember enjoying it at the time but kind of have a knee-jerk negative response to the thought of it now- I guess because of the rise of LOL ZOMBIES AND BACON/geek culture hegemony in the intervening years, also the various terrible films that Simon Pegg has done without Edgar Wright since? I watched some clips from Shaun on youtube just now though, and it still seemed pretty funny

soref, Thursday, 10 March 2016 15:06 (eight years ago) link

I really enjoyed the movies on this list that I saw:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Shaun of the Dead
Kill Bill Vol. 2
Sideways
The Incredibles
Collateral
Hotel Rwanda
Kung Fu Hustle
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

notable omission I also enjoyed: Ray
