I guess we'll have to wait and see!

small doug yule carnival club (unregistered), Monday, 21 March 2016 02:39 (nine years ago)

Varies quite a bit. Fewer 10s now than when I started, but I still occasionally begin drafting a longer post on Word. Mostly in the 5-7 range now. If you went by typos, you'd probably think 1-2. Most of the fussing I do is to try to head off dismissals and sarcasm. Which happens anyway, so probably not the most productive use of time.

This post was a 6.

clemenza, Monday, 21 March 2016 02:41 (nine years ago)

yeah mine was a 2

carly rae jetson (thomp), Monday, 21 March 2016 02:42 (nine years ago)

it's probably a 3 average for me, brought down by lazy youtube embeds, jpgs, lists, C&Ps, and boredom-induced shitposts. it's hard to take message board posting seriously in this era of 15 active users, but I feel like I should start contributing more of substance to this site, maybe get a new username and start writing 1000-word critical précis about Fetty Wap mixtapes or whatever.

(this post is maybe a 5.5)

small doug yule carnival club (unregistered), Monday, 21 March 2016 02:56 (nine years ago)

it depends on the topic because if im really feeling a topic then i will put in a 5's worth of effort but mostly its just firing off whatever impulses i have in my mind without regard for filter. 3

I put in way more thought than actual effort. like "i wanna say something about this" then 20 mins later... "ah fuck it." *close tab*

Roz, Monday, 21 March 2016 03:49 (nine years ago)

How much thought and effort verbiage do you put into your ilx posts (scale 0 to 10)?

A solid 8 or 9 on average.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 21 March 2016 04:32 (nine years ago)

Varies drastically depending on when you catch me. Part of the intention with changing DNs (and posting less) was to write with a bit more thought on a few project pages. That's not been particularly successful but seems worth striving for.
I'm afraid that I tend to use ILX as a watercooler more than anything else and that produces diminishing results all too often.

ulysses, Monday, 21 March 2016 05:06 (nine years ago)

I guess I'm more lurker than not, but the 0 rating doesn't seem to apply when I take into consideration all of the messages left unposted - maybe I'm struggling to put the right words together in a forum where many do that for a living/measly check/"recognition", maybe I have a minor point to make in a strain of discussion that everyone else moved on from hours ago, maybe my opinion merely echoes someone else's with no additional insight, maybe I am the dull cipher of my darkest fears, procrastinating at a monotonous office job, passing the time while waiting for death's cold embrace.

Nah, fuck it. Zero it is.

I don't post to ILX any more unless I'm feeling a 7 or 8 in effort.

But the more salient question is, how much effort do you put into *reading* ILX posts. What's the point of putting an effort of 7 or 8 into a post, when the place is dominated by people who are only reading or responding at a 2 or 3?

Sehr Kornisch (Branwell with an N), Monday, 21 March 2016 08:22 (nine years ago)

It's kind of a compliment to ILX that I give my posts a level-3 effort because that's about my max effort wrt most things.

Horse Throat (Old Lunch), Monday, 21 March 2016 17:21 (nine years ago)

1-3 most of the time but maybe a couple times a year i'll pull out a 7 or 8 on ilm

ciderpress, Monday, 21 March 2016 17:23 (nine years ago)

sometimes 10, sometimes 0.

i also have many typos due to iphoning, especially on the many days where i'm phoning it in (get it? this post is at least a 5), which probably make it appear that i care less than i really do. but i care! sometimes.

Karl Malone, Monday, 21 March 2016 17:26 (nine years ago)

My content probably amounts to the same level of discourse as those who only put in a 3 or 4, but pretty much everything I post is at least a 7. Mainly b/c I'm second-guessing myself, deleting entire posts and then going back to the thread to start again, double-checking assertions made even casually, etc etc. Times when I just post "^^^^" are a blessed relief to me, tbh.

ogmor, Monday, 21 March 2016 18:11 (nine years ago)

In many cases the more effort I put into an ilx post the more ignored I felt it was. Probably because the more effort I put in the more I'm hoping for responses/engagement with it. I'd go into pity-party mode since the radio-silence seemed to highlight how narrow my network of local IRL friends actually is. To clarify I think my wife is constantly baffled by my insistence to keep up with conversations here instead of have them with people I can actually interact with otherwise. But I don't know anyone IRL who is nerdy about American Primitivism or early 90s indie pop for instance. So at this point I usually just stick to irregularly posting uncontroversial chiming-in style "contributions" because I'm otherwise pretty addicted to lurking. Some threads move too fast for me, too.

i am professional discourse generator, effort is strictly proportional to length of post in 99% of cases. i wrote to an old college friend, a painter, the other day, like, voluminously, and she wrote back three paragraphs and said, 'it was very challenging for me to write this much'

Nabisco is an American manufacturer of cookies and snacks headquartered in East Hanover, New Jersey.

Every post has to be triple-checked for any missed understanding of: various opaque ironies, decades-old ILX mythologies I have no conception of, US-isms, the history of participating ilxors who might be offended by what I'm saying.

"Louis, is it okay to write 'ilxors' all in lower case?" etc

I loved Evan and emil.y's answers to this. I'm terrified that saying anything could elicit any kind of negative reaction anywhere. It's difficult because I'm ravingly opinionated, but not keen for this to take its usual form (raving), so can only emit these bizarre, stilted, narcissistic approximations of speech and hope that people will be able to successfully accumulate some flotsam of character over the course of years. Everything is regretted as soon as posted. I am often laughing, but this doesn't come across at all because I'm worried writing 'lol' might seem flippant or disingenuous. lol

And threads do move so fast! Obviously it's all worth it because this is ultimately like a life museum (but less memento mori than that sounds).

I voted 9 because there's always more to do.

Ecomigrant gnomics (darraghmac), Sunday, 27 March 2016 01:32 (nine years ago)

The more I labor over a post, the less likely I hit submit.

For me, laboring over a post is often a sign I haven't a clear idea of what I want to convey or else I doubt its value. If I can follow my thought from its beginning to its end, I can write it without a lot of fuss, however long the post might be.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Sunday, 27 March 2016 03:24 (nine years ago)

i voted 6 because i think the curve has gotten all screwed up in the post-nabisco era and people are selling themselves short. i write a lot of short thoughtless things but sometimes i can really get myself going especially if i'm trying to avoid working on something else.

next version of ilx should require you, when you submit a post, you have to click on a little meter to indicate the effort level. other people could click up or down on it to indicate whether they thought you tried as hard as you claim to. we could generate graphs of who's trying the hardest, or you could install a filter where you don't see any posts where people tried harder than a 5.

nabisco wrote many good posts but I wouldn't put him at the top end of the scale. A thoughtful post can be as brief as a sentence.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 27 March 2016 14:59 (nine years ago)

awww, thanks clemenza.

alfred, fair point about thoughtfulness vs. length. to be honest, the most thought i put into a post is probably when after a lot of typing and a long sigh, i realize it's really better left unsaid, and tab away to something else.

never ending bath infusion (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 27 March 2016 15:04 (nine years ago)

That's what I mean: thoughtfulness and length aren't a binary. I like your posts too.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 27 March 2016 15:05 (nine years ago)

Nabisco's posts weren't just good because of length though. He was, as the saying goes, OTM. Also it makes me sad new posters don't know who nabisco is (not that they *should*, just sad that he's been gone so long).

I wasn't around during his heyday but still search for his name in old threads with complex topics to see his opinion.

But "what's up, my Lil niggas, we're going to Applebee's tonight" managed to be both hilarious while disarming an old myth.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 27 March 2016 15:21 (nine years ago)

Yeah, nabisco's posts were almost always on point.

To answer the original question: maybe a 6 or 7 in my case; some of my posts are more considered than others, but my ILX style (or lack thereof) is fairly close to the way I speak, although irl conversation usually involves more codeswitching and a more varied use of irony.
