List the 5-8ish foods that make up the bulk of your intake. Why are these at the top, and what would you like to change, etc.

Forever LXI (rip van wanko), Monday, 11 April 2016 06:25 (nine years ago)

rice
pasta
potatoes
chicken thighs
some sort of curry powder mix
onions/garlic
tomatoes
silverbeet/spinach

Why bcz they are cheap and I can make loads of things in bulk with them.

Interesting. No, wait, the other thing: tedious. (Trayce), Monday, 11 April 2016 06:28 (nine years ago)

in order of good for you ness

avocados (almost every day)
almonds (almost every day)
broccoli (3x/wk)
ton o' water
limes
milk
cheese (cheap cheddar mostly)
cracked red pepper (on almost everything)
tortilla chips
whey protein

diet of Texan who can't afford much fancy stuff. I gotta drop the dairy, or cut it in half. want to add a lot more fish & leafy greens (been drinking cold press kale & spinach lately tho). more quality proteins. really need to learn to cook more, i eat like a college kid.

Forever LXI (rip van wanko), Monday, 11 April 2016 06:36 (nine years ago)

coffee
chocolate
beer

bread
potatoes
beans
rocket
spinach
tomatoes
mushrooms
soya milk

bread at the top because i have it as a major part of at least one meal a day, plus it's my go to snack food. potatoes too - rare is the day when i don't eat crisps tbh. is should probably try harder to reduce both of those (both high GI, high salt) but convenience + tastiness is hard to overcome

real orgone kid (NickB), Monday, 11 April 2016 06:43 (nine years ago)

For the last few years I've been like 90% vegetarian, and eating a lot of Tofu-based stir fries and so on. Last year I had problems with kidney stones and was told by the specialist that Tofu - and all things bean-related - are especially bad for kidney stone growth. Which is a shame, as I do like a baked bean, too.

Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Monday, 11 April 2016 07:48 (nine years ago)

Prawns
Smoked salmon
Small bag of microwaveable vegetables (winter)
Salad (summer)
Yoghurt (vanilla and/or hazelnut)
Pomegranate seeds
Nespresso

All easy to eat instantly. If I could change one thing, it'd be to become motivated to cook.

Half-baked profundities. Self-referential smirkiness (Bob Six), Monday, 11 April 2016 08:14 (nine years ago)

tomatoes
eggs
bread (would like to learn how to eat less bread tbh)
onions

i love cooking but i don't get to do it as often as i'd like, i guess i'm out 3/4 nights a week so i eat out then. my lunches at work also involve me going to a chain or occasionally somewhere nicer.

when i do cook:

eggs
rocket
tuna
chicken thighs
rice
potatoes
chorizo
various fish fillets

i use a lot of olive oil, vinegar, garlic, paprika, salt and pepper. drink a lot of water.

always amazed by people who don't eat much bread... it's so handy to just have... But not that great for you.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Monday, 11 April 2016 11:00 (nine years ago)

I tend to avoid it cos it makes me a bit sick. i'm not gluten intolerant or whatever, don't have the time or money to find out about my myriad health problems, but repeated experience shows me a few days of bread and I don't feel good.

I fucking love it though, I buy a loaf of bread with the same trepidation as most people feel when doing class a's.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Monday, 11 April 2016 11:12 (nine years ago)

I eat a lot of bread but I stopped eating white bread a couple of years ago

if it's literally the most frequently scoffed items rather than an attempt to represent one's gastronomic philosophy then it's something like:

tomatoes
mushrooms
chicken
pasta
potatoes
onions
beans
yoghurt

ogmor, Monday, 11 April 2016 13:57 (nine years ago)

i omitted alcohol - the amount of beer and wine i drink in a week could pay for my food budget twice over

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Monday, 11 April 2016 14:25 (nine years ago)

i had to look up wtf 'rocket' was

dynamicinterface, Monday, 11 April 2016 14:30 (nine years ago)

how can you not kn... oh i remember it's called 'arugula' elsewhere.

I've seen it spelled 'roquette' in some places. Is that right or is that nonsense?

I once got berated by a client at work and she said 'How can you mess this up? It's not rocket salad!'. I thought she was making a funny, so I chuckled a bit, but then I realised she wasn't joking, and that this is what she thought it was.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Monday, 11 April 2016 14:39 (nine years ago)

eruca sativa (salad rocket, salad arugula) or diplotaxis tenuifolia (wild rocket / wild arugula)

sarahell, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:20 (nine years ago)

i've somehow forsaken beans. so healthy, tasty, affordable

Forever LXI (rip van wanko), Monday, 11 April 2016 15:23 (nine years ago)

Love smoked paprika. Might start a 'new foods' thread for foodstuffs and meals that people didn't really eat 10-15 years ago. The first time I experienced smoked paprika must have been some time around 2010, but now it's p much the only kind you find because regular paprika doesn't have a very strong taste. Other things - rocket salad is fairly new. Red velvet cake is now the standard 'bring something in on your birthday' cake at work, but I'd never heard of it until about the turn of the decade.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Monday, 11 April 2016 15:25 (nine years ago)

Eggs
Rice
Onions+Garlic
Broccoli
Noodles/Pasta

An unfortunate amount of ground beef, processed wheat flour and processed sugar.

Honor thy pisstake as a hidden intention. (WilliamC), Monday, 11 April 2016 15:31 (nine years ago)

Might start a 'new foods' thread for foodstuffs and meals that people didn't really eat 10-15 years ago. The first time I experienced smoked paprika must have been some time around 2010,

it's a common ingredient in tapas. Has been a staple for me for at least 10 years

sarahell, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:36 (nine years ago)

it's especially nice with corn on the cob. get mayo, grated cheese and smoked paps, then just roll.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Monday, 11 April 2016 15:36 (nine years ago)

what a waste of smoked paprika!

bread
cheese
tomatoes
ryvita
pasta

Basically "cheese/tomato/carbs" is what I eat, so pizza or tomato pasta or cheese on toast or tomato soup w/ grated cheese etc etc. I am not a very healthy person.

beans (esp lentils)
potatos
corn & lime (only) tortillas

Edgard Varese is god (of music anyways) (outdoor_miner), Monday, 11 April 2016 18:49 (nine years ago)

on hand 99% of the time:
refined avocado oil for high smoke point stuff
TJ's California EVOO for not
frozen Alaskan salmon and tuna steaks from Costco
grassfed steaks from a local ranch once or twice a week
Whole Foods brand organic/air-chilled chicken breasts and thighs (cheapest I can find)
yellow onions + garlic + Dorot frozen garlic cubes
Blue Diamond kosher salt
honeycrisp apples
sambal oelek, Cholula
salted and roasted pistachios for snacking

Vegetables are whatever looks good at the store - right now asparagus is the shit, zucchini/yellow squash. Spices on as-needed basis, box of dry red wine during braising season.

My cooking has gotten super boring tbh - I'm single, live alone, have cut out refined carbs and sugar (I loved baking but I can't be trusted with an entire boule, I'm like an alcoholic who can't have a bottle of whiskey at home). Most nights it's simple protein + sauteed greens + one other veg. I want to eat more legumes but I can't find a way to make lentils palatable except for a J Kenji Lopez Alt chicken lentil stew recipe.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 11 April 2016 19:56 (nine years ago)

^^^virtually the only way I eat lentils is in this salad, but I eat it a lot and it's good with oily fish:

1 small diced red onion
two diced cooked beetroot from one of those packets
huge handful of leaf parsley, chopped coarsely
one can of dark green/puy lentils or between 250-500g puy lentils cooked by you

dressing: olive oil/balsamic vinegar/some of the beetroot juice from the packet/fresh or dried thyme/seasoning

jedi slimane (suzy), Monday, 11 April 2016 20:20 (nine years ago)

probably the most important ten (but I could extend this to twenty easily):

onions
eggs
rice
cheese
bagels
carrots
green leafy vegetables
mushrooms
tomatoes
coffee

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 11 April 2016 20:31 (nine years ago)

I should cook more eggs - between sous vide, the Gordon Ramsay-y soft scrambled style and steam hard boiled I have many enjoyable options, but it's rare that I get excited to eat eggs.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 11 April 2016 20:40 (nine years ago)

Eggs
Bread
Milk
Onions
Coffee
Apples
Garlic
Cheese
Spuds

Couldn't have convinced me even a few years ago I'd get that far without getting to a meat tbh

never had it so ogod (darraghmac), Monday, 11 April 2016 20:50 (nine years ago)

I'd be lost without potatoes because they are so versatile and cheap for what you can do with them. I do Baltis and Chillis with them that sustain us for two days, Welsh rarebits or the baked or roasted variety. Or just good ol' fucking chips.

if I'm not cooking, probably a burrito. If I'm cooking, probably pasta/stirfry/soup/stew with a protein (tofu/lentil/chicken usually), a veg (kale/chard/broccoli/green beans usually), and a starch (rice/pasta/quinoa).
