Anticipating Spider-Man: Homecoming (and then presumably Spider-Man: Prom)

I don't like the title and I hope it changes but it probably won't but whatever. It's time we had a thread for it anyway. I hope it's an improvement to what's been happening to Spidey cinematically.

So we have Marissa Tomei as Aunt May, Michael Keaton cast as an unspecified villain (rumor has it it's the Vulture), and the kids below cast as unspecified classmates:

Glad to see Marvel's mixing it up with some diversity.

Michael Keaton is officially back in as the Vulture. There are (almost assuredly unsubstantiated) rumblings about D'onofrio showing up as Kingpin.

If that happens, it'd be the first time the TV series cross over to the movies, and not vice versa.

Spidey's turn in Civil War was far and away my favourite ever screen depiction of the character, they nailed it. Really looking forward to this as a result.

i don't even watch agents of shield but just showing a couple of them on the helicarrier would've been such an easy gesture that it's stupid they didn't do it. i hope in spider-man:home-coming there's at least a line about some guy in hell's kitchen. i also hope we finally find out how he became spider-man.

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure I heard they're going to be expanding his origin into a trilogy of movies. I think this first one is mostly about the spider before it becomes irradiated.

Part two largely concerns pre-teen Peter Parker's ironic dislike of arachnids.

And it all comes to a head as he's seconds away from being bitten when the end credits for the third movie begin to roll.

Ah. I think Tuomas was referring specifically to the MCU. I thought by now at least one incidental character from the TV shows would've popped up in a movie but nope. I think I thought Sitwell first showed up on AoS but I realized recently that he was a fairly nondescript SHIELD dude walking around in a couple of the early films.

Hannibal Burress has been cast in an undisclosed role. I'm hoping for JJJ.

actually, looking into it a bit more, it seems that jacob batalon is in fact playing ned leeds of all people - i just assumed he must be playing ganke cuz he looks very much like ganke and he seems to have a similar dorky-best-friend role

much as i enjoyed tom holland as peter parker in civil war i still kinda wish this movie was about miles morales tho

yeah would rather see miles morales but idk at least the trailer makes it feel basically like a spider-man movie and not just a pile of nonsense like the last one. also glad to see john portman's atlanta marriott marquis getting its due. gotta say it'd be nice if they found a way to finally include spider-man's origin story, though.

Actually, they are (or at least were) making an animated Miles Morales film. It was supposed to be released next year but has been pushed back.

(I assume it'll be something like Big Hero 6 which is technically a Marvel movie but not an actual MCU movie.)

i think that's exactly the reason why i'm not exactly thrilled by what i've seen so far, cuz we've had five spider-man movies (six if you count civil war) in the last fifteen years and this does seem to be a remix of elements of all of them, with added marvel universe star power and the best peter parker yet. as huge a spider-man stan as ai am i dunno if that's gonna be enough!

Yeah, that's the one. It's unclear whether production has even started on it, though, so grain of salt.

an animated spider-man movie with a quarter of the fun and invention of cloudy with a chance of meatballs would be fantastic. imdb has virtually no info on it and apparently chris lord is writing but someone else is making their directorial debut on it. i guess i won't hold my breath on seeing miles on-screen either live-action or animated anytime soon...

i gave up on marvel a while ago; spiderman is probably the only one of these I have interest in seeing again. does it matter that I haven't watched anything after the Marvels film?

The only thing you need to know going into this is that a spell made everyone in the world forget who Peter Parker was in an effort to protect his loved ones. Mary Jane and best friend Ned and the Avengers no longer remember Peter and that makes him very sad.

Yeah pretty much if you watched No Way Home you're set for this one, a side character or two connection to more recent MCU doings aside.

It was cool when "Wolf Like Me" came on. I guess the film's director directed the video for that song as well.

I don't think you need to know much of anything beyond who Spider-man and his friends are, the movie does a pretty good job of explaining what there is to explain, and while the movie assumes you know a few familiar faces, it's not that complicated to grasp their relationship to the movie or Spider-man. The Villain (as such), their appearance might have more weight if you are familiar with the name/character, but the same went for Bob/The Void/Sentry in "Thunderbolts" (an adversary that incidentally occupied a very similar mental/narrative space with this one).

Something subtle the movie introduced was something I always appreciated in the comics, the hierarchy of mutants, especially as it related to the central metaphor of prejudice and discrimination. Spider-man, Hulk, etc., there are any number of characters altered or enhanced by radiation, but they rarely/didn't always align themselves with actual mutants, who were often feared/distrusted/persecuted as non-human.

iirc Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were retconned as mutants in the comics, since it turned out they were Magneto's kids.

The Scarlet Witch and her twin brother Quicksilver debuted as a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in X-Men #4 (March 1964).

Ah. I guess it's more accurate to say they were retconned as non-mutants by the MCU.

I think the only thing that you can say as a blanket statement on those characters is that the witch is an actual witch

I loved this one. really cemented the Holland era (I feel this, since the last one was this big crossover cameo shindig it almost felt like an "extra" side-story Annual / epilogue to the Mysterio one). Probably the best live-action Spider-Man since Tobey #2, and I've really enjoyed all the MCU Spideys!

xps Josh: yeah, i thought it was interesting how this connected thematically with Thunderbolts. also, the big finales feeling similar and Yelena returning in resolved-internal-conflicts chill mode

the entire "car" chase sequence is a repeatable bit in the second playstation game!

I saw this again tonight with a friend that hadn't seen it yet, fully expecting to be bored. I liked it even more the second time around; without having to pay attention to the plot I was able to focus more on the look of it. So many inventive camera moves, characters that actually look like humans with blemishes and crooked teeth, and the most classic looking Spiderman ever seen in a movie. I didn't like his high-tech Avengers gear. His costume in this movie is perfect and it has fabric that bunches and wrinkles, his moves are perfect, it's damn good.

For a movie with lots of extra MCU characters and a convoluted plot, it didn't feel overstuffed or bogged down.

I liked the detail in the last one that Willem Dafoe had straightened teeth (makeup or effects I don’t know) as Norman Osborn, but the Green Goblin’s teeth are Dafoe’s normal ones.

I watched this with a friend, we both enjoyed it a lot, and I said something about the movie Punisher being better than the comics version, and he said “The Punisher was in this movie?”

this is both the best Marvel movie in ages, certainly one of the best-looking and most satisfying in terms of action/choreography that they've ever done... and a frustrating repetition of the story/theme problems that burden the entire "universe" and especially the Spidey films. they have this fantastic cast and a sure hand on the tone and heart, but elements are just piled on from out of a grab-bag. those elements were all played really well (though i didn't love the take/performance for the mysterious main antagonist)... i just don't think they amplified and reinforced each other very well. i just feel like they made a genuinely very entertaining blockbuster, but clearly had a stone-cold superhero classic in them, if they'd worked out a stronger core for the story.

Obv not counting inflation adjustments etc but it is nuts to realize just how big this is, it’s about to take the overall US crown

I felt like I was missing a big Zendaya scene at the end and came out feeling slightly unsatisfied. But I adored the "Spidey tour of the New York Marvel Universe" sections - I was just beaming, all "I AM HAVING A VERY GOOD TIME AT THE CINEMA!!!"

The [mystery protagonist] stuff was fine, not a disaster, but much less interesting.

Holland has grown into a terrific scene partner and completely anchors the movie amidst its busy-ness. I don't know how much range he has outside the MCU, but it's a very good performance.

I think the way they went with Zendaya not remembering her love for Peter was unexpected and satisfying. They’ll probably go back on it at some point though.

The protagonist was still pretty good and developed for an MCU movie. Often the villains often feel half-baked. This was a grounded character with motivations that more or less made sense.

I took the final exchange with Ned as establishing clearly that the MJ memory plot can and will be resolved... but that they'd just chosen not to do that here, and let the best-bud relationship take center stage for once. Which was really sweet!

I kinda think people are reading too much into that last beat. I took it as Ned, not knowing Peter Parker but being obsessed with Spider-Man, and knowing his first name was Peter, putting the pieces together when a Peter introduces himself. I took the full handshake thing more like a bit of muscle memory. Might just be me!

Oh interesting! I really took it as the kind of memories-coming-back moment that (character) earlier had insisted would not happen. I thought Batalon played it that way, too.

My most wrongest theory was that Tramell Tillman would turn out to be the MCU Professor X

I'm torn between thinking that they made (redacted baddie) too mean and ruthless (poor Hulk!) and that it was interesting seeing a different take on the character.

Still, this was the first Marvel in a while where I thought "I'd like to see more of that/them" instead of "thank God that's over for now".

I took it as Ned’s memories being triggered and returning. Holland is only going to do this for so long and I assume they want Peter and Mary Jane back together before things wrap up.

Remember the big Spiderman gets married issue? I don’t think they’re going there or anything, it just reminded me of it.

guys, MJ accidentally says “Peter” as Spider-Man is exiting earlier in the movie. Ned has interacted with Spider-Man earlier in the movie — he was chilling with Ned and MJ in costume. So when a guy who introduces himself as Peter seems to be familiar with you, and MJ accidentally called Spider-Man that name earlier…

yeah but what kind of ending is that for a movie? Ned connects some dots and concludes that the random guy talking to him is probably Spider-Man, and therefore probably "Peter" as MJ called him? and this looms larger than them sharing a secret handshake previously unknown to him?

After the secret handshake I imagined memories flooding back to him. It would be a wack ending if it was just Ned realizing that this guy was Spiderman. If that's all they wanted to do, why didn't they do that in the apartment?

the plot of the movie has a couple twists but it’s basically “I can’t be both Spider-Man and Peter Parker” and he’s told repeatedly that he needs friends/allies. The actual payoff to the main plot is “I can be Peter Parker and have friends!”

the side plot that covers parallel material has him becoming more spider-like as he lives secluded and the big fight scene has him confront “am I man or spider” and he chooses both before kicking some ninja ass

there’s also that bit where he’s explaining to the antagonist that she can still make other connections with people and be human. the movie’s about realizing that bad people exist and catastrophes happen but you need to connect even if you fear that connection

they didn’t do it earlier in the apartment because Peter was still holding himself separate from humanity! he has several more character beats after that scene

I think writing a full essay on it would be pretty groan-worthy but there’s something in there that reads like a post-pandemic story — man stays away from other people all the time to the extent he has his food dropped on his doorstep, refuses to go outside without a mask, and tells himself he’s doing so for the good of people who don’t even know who he is. He learns that you have to have some trusted friends who are worth the risk.

So in your reading, is he planning to be Spider-Man, and have friends as Peter Parker, but not have them know he's Spider-Man? I'm not sure that would really change much in terms of the burden of holding everything on his shoulders, or "protecting" them from Spider-Man's enemies (should said enemies learn he's Peter Parker). And I don't think it's really the direction that his cop friend is trying to point him in.

It's funny actually - by spending a whole movie with a TRULY isolated, friendless workaholic superhero, the story basically makes even returning to a standard "secret identity" status quo seem deeply unsatisfactory!

xpost - absolutely a post-pandemic story --- on the Critical Darlings podcast someone brought this up in terms of the experience of young folks who genuinely had to watch a year or two of beloved friends' lives at a lonely distance! I thought that might explain some of why this has been such a big hit.

No, because Ned is enthusiastic about meeting this guy named Peter who seems to be familiar with him because he realizes Peter is Spider-Man, the guy he recently met after enthusiastically tracking for years!

It is, to get emotionally goofy about it, about embracing all parts of yourself and having friends and loved ones that get to know all of you

so it's like, Ned doesn't remember anything from before, but Peter is opening himself up to starting from scratch with these people? and accepting the risk to them? i could buy that... just seems like a short-changed miracle somehow.

like, why include the handshake in that case?

it’s artistic shorthand to show “i am making you my friend” imo but if they want to interpret it as “Ned remembers” for some future movie, whatever. sometimes a bro handshake is just a bro handshake

I saw something go past on Facebook (accompanied by a shot of Zendaya from The Odyssey) where someone, who had clearly been predicting that it would be a flop, was whining okay you guys, but it didn't stay on top for long, Brand New Day overtook it quickly. There was a lot of "shh, no-one tell him who plays the love interest in Spider-man" in the comments.

With Dune "Part 3" in December, she might set a record for highest grossing year*? Lots of people are only in two of the three -
Robert Pattison's not in Spider-Man, Florence Pugh's not in The Odyssey, Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal aren't in Dune.

And of course there's an Avengers film coming out the same day as Dune that does have Florence Pugh but doesn't seem to have Tom Holland? Though it would be wild if they were #1 and #2.

I didn't see Cherry and Chaos Walking, but I didn't hear great things about them (though I think almost all of the complaining was not about him, but yeah maybe he has trouble holding the camera's view by himself).
Maybe he needs a Raimi Spider-Man heel turn! I'd love to see him in a Knives Out.

I did see Uncharted for my crimes, and he seemed as distracted as everyone else by the main role being him not Mark Wahlberg.

*I'm aware this is not, actually, a thing, but I'm fascinated by what I'm fascinated by.
