what are your 3 favorite movies of 2016 so far?

i've seen nothing yet. what have you seen?

weird and goofy stuff is encouraged.

also every year someone says "i've only seen one movie so far this year and it was _______" so if you really must make this your answer that's fine but your recommendation might not be taken very seriously unless it's possibly followed by the phrase "and it was fucking dope" or something to that affect.

billstevejim, Monday, 25 April 2016 07:11 (nine years ago)

saw a screening of The Assassin a few weeks back and wish I could see it again cos it was pretty amazing

some men just want to watch the world Bern (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 April 2016 07:37 (nine years ago)

the last two I watched were Horse Money and Son Of Saul and I was blown away by both of them

calzino, Monday, 25 April 2016 07:45 (nine years ago)

Yes, The Assassin is far and away the best 'new' film I've seen this year (I liked it so much I went to see it twice in the space of a week, pretty unusual for me these days)

Plus, The Arabian Nights (especially part 1) and The Witch

Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Monday, 25 April 2016 08:05 (nine years ago)

Thirding The Assassin. Liu Shumin's The Family. Hm. Cemetery of Splendour.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 April 2016 08:09 (nine years ago)

Arabian Nights part 1 (debating whether this is in my top films of all time list, might be exaggerating but...)
High Rise
Rams

And the cry rang out all o'er the town / Good Heavens! Tay is down (imago), Monday, 25 April 2016 08:31 (nine years ago)

The Assassin was great but I put it on last yr's poll.

In no order:

Our Little Sister
King Lear (Peter Brook version from 1971)
Histoire(s) Du Cinema

For Docs: Guzman's Pearl Button

Apart from the Kore-eda the year so far has been full of stunts and bullshit.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 25 April 2016 10:21 (nine years ago)

tt has been trying to get me to come to Our Little Sister for a while, seems like it might be the next one

And the cry rang out all o'er the town / Good Heavens! Tay is down (imago), Monday, 25 April 2016 10:22 (nine years ago)

The Club
Arabian Nights Volume 1: The Restless One
King Jack/High-Rise tied for third (though couldn't be more different)

Notable mentions to Rams, Couple in a Hole and Papusza.

Can't wait for Our Little Sister! Will definitely see it this week (along with Victoria too, I guess).

propaganda for the American springtime (tangenttangent), Monday, 25 April 2016 13:25 (nine years ago)

Oh shit The Club might be better than Rams, forgot about that one

And the cry rang out all o'er the town / Good Heavens! Tay is down (imago), Monday, 25 April 2016 13:27 (nine years ago)

Embrace the Serpent
In the Shadow of Women
Mountains May Depart

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 May 2016 18:19 (nine years ago)

wanted to like The Club but the ending derailed it.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 May 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)

Both the actors that play the young + old Karamakate in Embrace Of The Serpent are brilliant as indeed are the rest of the cast, my only criticism is that the Heart Of Darkness style death cult seemed a bit knock off in a heavy handed Inarritu manner. I still absolutely loved the movie a lot though.

calzino, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 22:49 (nine years ago)

Embrace of the Serpent wasn't quite as impressive as it should have been, visually. But very interesting, layered film, that I've thought about a lot since I saw it. And it's a mindfuck that it got an oscar nom, that's crazy.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 23:14 (nine years ago)

High Rise
The Invitation
The Witch

I enjoyed Deadpool too

i;m thinking about thos Beans (Michael B), Thursday, 5 May 2016 07:25 (nine years ago)

three months pass...

and Nick Schager picks 25

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 August 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

I keep forgetting to revive this thread. Schager's picking The Neon Bible and Louder Than Bombs are a cuckoo-for-Cocopuffs moment. So is Midnight Special to an extent.

Mine:

Love and Friendship
Mountains May Depart
Embrace of the Serpent
No Home Movie

I got more but that's four.

Green Room
Dheepan

embrace of the serpent

zootopia

i am holding the #1 spot for kaili blues which is just my kind of thing. but i haven't seen a lot this year.

remy bean, Saturday, 20 August 2016 01:45 (nine years ago)

the fits was really, really good. i'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it. at first i thought it was a lovely lyrical meditation on lead poisoning, but i think it's actually about the st. vitus dances, mass hysteria, liberation, the sublime and really excellent rhythmic editing. also a lead actor named royalty hightower.

remy bean, Saturday, 20 August 2016 01:46 (nine years ago)

O.J. Simpson: Made in America
De Palma
Obit or Maggie's Plan

calzino, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 21:17 (five years ago)

I really don't get why anyone would still list films from 2015 on a list of best films from 2016 four years later

Frederik B, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 21:52 (five years ago)

Anyway a list:

Scarred Hearts
Sieranevada
