Yeah it was pretty good! Very tense. Super violent! Surprisingly not-embarrassing (for a movie) portrayal of punk rock!
― Star Wars ate shiitake (latebloomer), Monday, 2 May 2016 20:07 (nine years ago)
hell yes. good punx vs. evil punx was a solid theme. just found out the same director made Blue Ruin, which also was great!
― davey, Monday, 2 May 2016 20:31 (nine years ago)
yea i think i slightly prefer blue ruin but green room is also cool/good
― johnny crunch, Monday, 2 May 2016 22:08 (nine years ago)
may all his future films have colors and settings in their titles.
up next: Taupe Veranda

I saw Green Room and Purple Rain on the same day. You'd think I'd be dreaming about a crossover.

― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 22:17 (nine years ago)
went to Purple Rain first, then Green Room right after.
I enjoyed Green Room. I liked that they got the attention to details right re: the punk scene. I knew what song they were going to play at the White supremacist compound as soon as they said "wanna do something really stupid?".
Imogen Poots is always solid.
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 22:18 (nine years ago)
I like that she didn't even really hold the shotgun right, like someone who wasn't used to holding shotguns would hold it
I liked how their actions were perfectly in line with a band stupid and brave enough to play an anti-nazi song at a nazi club.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 23:21 (nine years ago)
Like, this movie could have been called The Courage of Your Convictions.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 23:23 (nine years ago)
Haha. I like that Imogen Poots's name is Imogen Poots.

― Neanderthal, Thursday, 12 May 2016 23:45 (nine years ago)
Still not sure if I'll like this but increasingly want to see it.
But really I just wanted to add that my favourite actor names to giggle at are Mimsy Farmer and Randy Mantooth.
― emil.y, Thursday, 12 May 2016 23:53 (nine years ago)
This is pretty good but has been overrated. The acting is mostly good, it looks beautiful, and I agree the punk band aesthetics/sound/friendship was really well done. But Patrick Stewart was just wrong for his part. I couldn't understand the dialogue frequently so then when the characters made weird choices I couldn't tell if it was dumb plotting or if I missed an important line. Like why did the nazis give them a gun in the first place?
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 13 May 2016 01:24 (nine years ago)
I thought Blue Ruin was overrated too though I think I liked it a little more than Green Room bc that main dude is great (and was great again in Green Room).
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 13 May 2016 01:25 (nine years ago)
I was a little confused, too. I think they gave them the gun just to buy time and make them feel OK staying put while they sussed out the situation, figuring they weren't going to use the gun. Agree Patrick Stewart wasn't quite right for the role. Or at least, he might have been, had his role been a bit bigger/showier. But he's pretty quiet and methodical and not in it nearly as much as his grunts.
While we're talking about shouldas, yeah, the Nazis were way too chill and gave the punks too much leeway. If they really wanted to cover their tracks and didn't care how much of a mess they made doing it, they would have just done it. I mean, a lot was introduced to show the nazis as super meticulous - fire codes, accounting, that sort of thing - so I suppose the way they handled the interlopers was supposed to be the same strain of ultra-cautious behavior. But given they had no problems letting a dog rip out someone's throat on the dance floor, I don't see why they even gave the punks a fighting chance. Unless, again, it was just Patrick Stewart being super methodical and not being rushed into making a mistake. At one point he even pauses and says "wait - am I forgetting anything?" and I'm not sure there's a specific payoff for that.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 May 2016 01:44 (nine years ago)
I think the idea is they like to disappear people in staged ways that don't require them to hide or dump bodies and worry about them being discovered. hiding in plain sight, so to speak - yes, there's dead bodies, but hey there's a good explanation for it!
It had little to do with the messiness of the killing, everything to do with the way they wanted to stage it. They wanted to make it look like a bunch of loser punks trespassed on their property by hopping the fence and tried to siphon gas, when protective guard dogs spotted them and attacked them. So naturally, they wouldn't care if the dog mauled the punks - that's why they sent them in there.
giving the punks the gun, well...it happened before they'd killed any of the punks, so they needed enough bodies that they could stage as being mauled. If they ran at the bouncer, he might shoot and kill one or more of them, and then that ruins the staging. Meanwhile, giving them the gun would make them less likely to jump the bouncer, instead just using the gun to subdue him. also makes it more likely that they won't try to immediately escape, as Stewart's gang still has the upper hand due to knowing the terrain and having a much larger barrage of weapons, including said dogs. They don't even use the gun to kill the bouncer!
still, it doesn't all entirely hold up to close scrutiny, no, but I kind of like the idea of these guys, instead of relying on chopping up/dumping bodies and hoping nobody sniffs around and asks questions, instead hide in plain sight by saying 'hey these guys are dead, our dogs killed them when they trespassed'. less likely to be suspected when they are cooperative with authorities and aren't hiding, much more easily swept under the rug.
whereas someone getting their face shot off couldn't be disposed of that way.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 13 May 2016 03:01 (nine years ago)
also figured the giving the gun thing was seen as a gesture of 'good will' to the punks, to lull them into a false sense of security.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 13 May 2016 03:03 (nine years ago)
Yeah, that's what I thought, just buying time and getting them to stay put.
The local cops didn't have much trouble getting to this backwoods enclave. Think they'd been there before, given all the violent punk concerts and known white supremacists hanging around. You'd think any call to this place would raise suspicions - "not again" - let alone finding an entire van of young people mauled by attack dogs. But best not to think about it. Otherwise the movie would be 30 minutes long. And I really had no prob with any perceived lapses in logic.
Btw, fave details: the band corrects the interviewer that they're from Arlington, not DC. Not that Arlington to the best place on earth (I'll be there tomorrow!), but it lacks the cred of DC. Also, the guy I think very fleetingly notes he learned those moves in wrestling. Neither of these things reflect poorly on the band as poseurs or anything, just little details that show that even these righteous punk dudes had childhoods and educations and stuff. Was the punk least willing to stay put the same one in the interview who half-boasted he wasn't going to live as long as Iggy Pop? I got the sense he came from a less comfortable or stable background than his bandmates.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 May 2016 03:12 (nine years ago)
Loved this movie.
"wait - am I forgetting anything?" and I'm not sure there's a specific payoff for that.
The shotgun. They forgot about the shotgun.

Agree that it probably does not hold up to absolutely clinical scrutiny (thought Stewart was plenty creepy though) but I found the leaps to minor enough to not disturb my enjoyment.
― One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Saturday, 14 May 2016 13:38 (nine years ago)
Totally dorky former D&D playing kid admission but I thought this was the case and IMDB trivia just confirmed it: "Toward the end of the film, the Dragonlance novel "Dragons of Spring Dawning" can be seen in the band's van." LOL

I'll go so far as to say Patrick Stewart was bad in this film, they should have found some random weirdo for this part
It was good but preferred the comically lurid blue ruin

The two other dudes in the theater were drunk and wandering in and out halfway through (I noticed them getting up and down a little but didn't realize they were lit), eventually the police were called to escort them out. The manager gave me a refund pass for another film and told me that apparently they strolled into various theaters. So basically I had it to myself.

― Here, let me Danesplain that for you (jjjusten), Sunday, 17 July 2016 03:43 (nine years ago)
again SPOILER, but the nice white power final girl (friend of the deceased) was a witness to the murder. when the band members saw both her alive and her dead friend dead, the nazis decided they had to clean everybody up.

"SPOILERS
I'm pretty sure someone getting stabbed hilt deep in the temple is gonna be pretty hard to play off as a whoopsie"
But the band doesn't know who anyone is or anything about the stabbing. Everyone who works at the club suddenly acts panicky and guilty when the band sees the body. Just seems weird.
― calstars, Sunday, 17 July 2016 12:02 (nine years ago)
at least there weren't any kids at the nazi bar
― adam, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:06 (nine years ago)
made total sense to me honestlythe band sees the murder, panics and immediately calls the cops - they're obviously not going to go along with whatever story was going to be cooked up. four witnesses m/lthe nazis don't want the cops to investigate what is obviously a cold-blooded murder over drugs and/or nazi betrayal (a little confused admittedly about how planned this was) ten feet away from their hidden basement drug factory
― Nhex, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:26 (nine years ago)
the nazis are alluded to having quite a body count prior to this one, having cops on their property for longer than necessary probably something they want to avoid.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:53 (nine years ago)
