*IF* they get Matthews out they will struggle to avoid the follow on at this rate

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 20 May 2016 14:22 (nine years ago)

England's number 3 is this summer's hot topic

Compton the man in possession, but not for long

Ballance, Robson, Malan, Westley, Bell, Borthwick all in the mix

And the cry rang out all o'er the town / Good Heavens! Tay is down (imago), Friday, 20 May 2016 15:10 (nine years ago)

I'd like to see Borthwick given a go there myself, although I'm aware this isn't the likeliest option

I hope The Cricket gets a look in this year, what with Euro 2016 round the corner. Fuck an Olympics though.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Friday, 20 May 2016 15:12 (nine years ago)

I saw Borthwick play in his only Test thus far, talk about a hiding to nothing

So Jimmy has still got it, then: current spell 3-3-0-3

Now that is what you call third umpiring by tv replay. Rod Tucker is awesome.
Football take note!

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 28 May 2016 15:30 (nine years ago)

Bangladesh would have put up a significantly better fight. Maybe even Zimbabwe

three weeks pass...

was I the only one watching the ODI? remarkable game.
Sri Lanka celebrating while England ran a 3rd on the 2nd last ball then Plunkett launched the last ball for 6 to tie the game was pure lolz

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)

i was watching it, yeah it was amazing

woakes is a handy cricketer these days, who knew

imago, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 21:36 (nine years ago)

i always liked him. It can take a few years to really reach the level. jimmy anderson took 4 years or so to establish himself. He only got in the england team one time as he was playing club cricket over in NZ and someone got injured and he hasnt looked back. Root struggled, Bairstow struggled. even alec stewart struggled initially.
That's why we need to persevere with Hales and Butler. They all look the part more than say Compton, Jordan and in test match cricket Morgan (sadly). Though wouldnt it be nice if they could.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 22:34 (nine years ago)

I think back to some of the jokers that played in the 90s or even the 80s. We're quite lucky.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 22:35 (nine years ago)

a few chickens coming home to roost for the england selectors. oh and amir is back

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 15:34 (nine years ago)

helps when you have the world's best spinner i guess

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 15:54 (nine years ago)

a proper game, this

classy win that, always love to see Pakistan playing well

PLPeni (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 17 July 2016 17:10 (nine years ago)

I love it when both teams play well. would be nice if this went all the way to the final test with nobody knowing who will win the series. Like the 2005 ashes

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:44 (nine years ago)

England probably need to bring back Bell for this series as hes our best player of spin

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:45 (nine years ago)

hes not even that old! younger than KP who everyone wants back

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:45 (nine years ago)

Bell won't be back, but Anderson and Stokes into the team make it a lot stronger. I've got a 5 day ticket for Old Trafford, should be good!

ghosts that don't exist (Neil S), Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:11 (nine years ago)

Tho its unlikely they wont drop vince and ballance they might be forced to and Bell's experience against spin will count in his favour. If he goes out there in the next week or 2 and scores big runs then he might get the nod

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:41 (nine years ago)

will, not wont

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:41 (nine years ago)

I think they will stick with Vince for the time being. I wanted Bell in for Sri Lanka, but it's highly unlikely they'll recall him now. Don't look back!

ghosts that don't exist (Neil S), Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:14 (nine years ago)

Cant get over Stokes being given out overturning the decision since that mark was clearly there before the ball passed.

well done joe root tho

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 23 July 2016 13:54 (nine years ago)

devastating day for England this

two weeks pass...

what a brilliant test match. To come back from a 103 deficit is a great achievement for England. I thought we were nailed on for a defeat after the 1st innings.

Impressive stuff from both teams at times.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:25 (nine years ago)

you always think they're nailed on for a defeat :p

great match even tho mostly i've just had it on TMS

the Zenga bus is coming (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:26 (nine years ago)

thought Pakistan needed a 150 lead tbh

imago, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:35 (nine years ago)

yeah a great game. that each of the 5 England bowlers took 2 wickets satisfied my OCD tendencies. I'm going to the Oval on Friday!

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:42 (nine years ago)

love it when Moeen gets Man of the Match :D

imago, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:47 (nine years ago)

well there's no question about his batting

the Zenga bus is coming (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:48 (nine years ago)

he's my favourite. perfect elegant instinctive cricketer

just wish his bowling was like 20% better. you saw how modest he was accepting his award, going on about the seamers. while it's true he's by a long way the 5th best bowler in the side at any given time, he has the drift and spin to be better. might never happen though.

it's great how every time his place is questioned he pulls something out of the bag

imago, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:51 (nine years ago)

130-plus runs for one dismissal and some wickets is a great effort!

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:51 (nine years ago)

tbh when he gets picked as sole spinner in a match where spin is likely to be important i blame the selectors more than Moeen, feel like he deserves to be looked after better because he's good enough to be in there on batting alone

the Zenga bus is coming (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:54 (nine years ago)

he seemed to pick up some confidence in that 2nd innings when he was given attacking field settings. Tufnell was saying on TMS the other day that he things Moeen will be okay in India over the winter as he will be bowling in tandem on turning pitches. The problem there is whether England can get any runs against Ashwin and co. for Moeen to bowl with.

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:57 (nine years ago)

"bowling spin in tandem" obv.

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:57 (nine years ago)

Moeen is good enough to be given a chance to bat at 5 or 6 if they decide Ballance or Vince isnt up to it/injured

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 17:03 (nine years ago)

for India: Cook, Hales, Root, Ballance, Moeen, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Rashid, Broad, Anderson perhaps?

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 17:06 (nine years ago)

Cook, Hales*, Root, Ballance, Bairstow, Stokes, Moeen, Woakes, Rashid**, Broad, Anderson looks good to me. Bairstow needs to come up the order. He's a bit iffy against spin sometimes so it'll be a good test.

*in the long term I see Hameed of Lancashire taking over

**in the long term I see an epic duel between Lancashire's Parkinson twins for the spinner's spot, and I also see a role for Ansari or even Batty if they want finger-spin. India might well take Rashid to pieces

imago, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:13 (nine years ago)

Ansari has been talked about for this winter I believe, I would think he'll get a squad place. I suppose Borthwick might still get a look as well, though he's a no. 3 who bowls leggies occasionally now.

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:34 (nine years ago)

So none of you want Moeen and Bairstow in the top 5 with Stokes at 6 and Butler keeping and in at 7?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:47 (nine years ago)

jesus no

buttler needs to score first class runs

jason roy just hit an fc ton, would say he's pushed ahead of buttler in the 'let's put a hitter in our test team' stakes

imago, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:48 (nine years ago)

a hitler

imago, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:48 (nine years ago)

I think you might want to get Buttler in there again at some point, but yeah he needs some runs

Neil S, Sunday, 7 August 2016 19:52 (nine years ago)

<3 Moeen

England claim highest ODI total record against deeply awful Pakistan. Was a terrible pleasure to watch

imago, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 16:58 (eight years ago)

Blimey. Wahab's figures, 0 for 110 - letting let him bowl out his full quota of overs was perhaps not the greatest idea?

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan an' aw noo (Tom D.), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 17:02 (eight years ago)

best bit of his spell was him clean-bowling Buttler only for it to be called no ball and for the ball to canon off the stumps for another 4 byes
