The Hardwicks appear to have the "novels based on British cop shows" racket sewn up.

I like this anecdote from Philip Martin, who wrote several episodes of Z Cars (as well creating Gangsters and writing for Dr Who)

There was an ex-cop who vetted the scripts. His initials were WAR (very apt) and my script would come back with blue pencil all over it. Nor did he confine himself to police procedural matters-he believed it was his duty to protect the image of the police. As the show was live you sometimes had to write dialogue to cover the actor’s movement across the studio. During one of these passages I had two cops sitting in their car watching a pretty girl waltz by. One of the guys comments how attractive she seems. This caused an explosion of blue pencil. ‘Does this writer (me) not realise that the policeman saying this is MARRIED!’

soref, Monday, 30 May 2016 00:08 (nine years ago)

lol those two guys seem to be involved in two entirely separate physical activities xp.

I'm somewhat baffled by the existence of that Redcap annual, the synopses on wikipedia don't make it sound particularly child friendly:

Mann encounters hostility from every quarter when he investigates a rape which took place inside an army barracks. Even the victim doesn't want to help him.

Mann's search for a pimp who specialises in blackmailing soldiers leads him to a place that specialises in black market activity. Further investigations lead him to an unconscious woman and a vicious fight.

Mann finds himself in Aden trying to investigate the vicious beating of an Arab worker. Encountering prejudice at every turn, he has to determine whether it was self-defence or systemised brutality

etc. and that's just the first three episodes.

there's a clip of the Aden episode on youtube, the suspect is played by Leonard Rossiter: https://youtu.be/0msCtNbGFlk

Slightly off topic but I have a question about a british police drama I just can't place. Two actors I would recognize but can't remember the names of either. One man, one woman, almost at all times screaming at each other, scarlet with rage, but of course also solving all sorts of crime cases together.

Thomas Disch wrote the novelization of The Prisoner! Would like to read that. Danger Man was briefly shown in the States as Secret Agent Only remember the theme song, delivered by Johnny Rivers: "Se-cret, Aaaa-junt main, Se-cret, Aaaa-gent main, they've gi-hi-ven you a num-bah, and taken aWAY yo' name!"
