Cameron wasn't under any serious pressure from Boris when he announced the referendum, Boris wasn't even an MP at the time, but he was vulnerable to losing votes to UKIP. Really I think Boris's role in driving the country off a cliff is overstated, it's not as if huge swathes of Northern England and Wales decided on the basis of his campaign.

Cameron WAS vulnerable to pressure from UKIP, and The Sun in particular used it as a pressure-group on the Tories throughout the last Parliament. Even if Cameron had said no to a referendum, the chances are he would have eventually been replaced with a Eurosceptic leader who would have actively campaigned for Leave. It was a massive fuckup from Cameron, he will go down as the worst post-war PM, but we would very probably have got here eventually anyway.

In terms of sustained, malign influence going back decades, it's hard to look past Murdoch as the one constant. There's no Blair without Murdoch, the way in which the Labour Party presented itself would have been completely different. This whole situation has been driven in part by the perception that the Labour Party no longer represents its voters and no longer cares about working class people, and the number one reason for that has been the need to pander to Murdoch.

Correct answer is still probably Thatcher though, which is quite an achievement seeing as she's been dead for years.

cameron. leadership characterised by carelessness and short-term foot-shuffling throughout ended with this carelessly destructive act. handed over a problem with his party to a 50/50 referendum because of a lack of courage or skill. divided people against each other (already divided obv, but the need to commit and the inflammatory campiagn arguments were poisonous - friendships and families set against each other).
