Yes!

If it's not too intense, I like the smell of skunk spray.

for some reason i enjoy the smell of the print shop at work which smells like the old wrestling room at my high school for some reason. not after it was full of sweaty dudes, but when you first walked in. just mats and...i dunno a vague musk?

dog paws

one I just discovered yesterday: thickish cardboard slightly singed after being cut by laser

James Morrison, Friday, 19 August 2016 01:53 (eight years ago) link

dog paws are a good smell. nearly all dog smells (except farts) are good smells.

and its been a long time since i done sniffed it, but mimeograph ink was a favorite once upon the early '80s.

Action figures fresh out the package. I'm guessing the aroma is some mostly toxic mix of paint and plastic.

There's a specific ink/paper combination that I love. I've noticed it throughout my life, but there was a big reawakening when Blackalicious's Nia album was released and I caught a whiff of the liner notes. There was a day or two where I carried it around in my backpack with me trying to get my friends to smell it. No one else was impressed though.

Yeah, basically.

Also like books/old books/fresh print smells but I thought that was pretty common?

emil.y, Friday, 19 August 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

Everybody else who I showed that lyrics book to thought I was a kook for saying it, but I get that it's not particularly weird.

how's life, Friday, 19 August 2016 14:35 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, there are totally particular ink & paper stock (& probably occasionally paper coating) combinations that smell great. I've noticed this on LP sleeves and a variety of periodicals and books. I went to a bunch of antique stores last weekend and I swear I spent half the time smelling various printed materials.

Yeah, not sure that falls under weird smells.

Back 25 years ago or so I bought a coffee table book about beer, and I swear it smelled like hops. There wasn't any "hey we added hop scent to the printing process!" gimmick, just a happy accident. It went to Goodwill in last year's book purge.

Does lead-free solder smell the same? And is it the solder or the flux or the combo of the two?

Two Kisses and Three Wet Mouths (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 August 2016 17:59 (eight years ago) link

some more from me but that may not be particularly weird:

cd booklets - yes! open a brand new cd and it was a particular type of ink

instruments - nice quality instruments made of wood like pianos and guitars. i had a classical guitar that had the most beautiful smell i have ever smelled, and it made me feel at home and at peace. it broke my heart that i had to sell it

when i went to japan i opened many goodies, like snacks or just little packages in general that smelled nice. i guess a mix of plastic and paint/ink

i hate the smell of milk, but there is a particular brand here that i find i really love the smell of. the brand is heritage and it smells nice

wet, decaying vegetation. been raining nights lately and the fan in my window makes the room like a jungle floor.

cosign on ink/paper combinations; i am a major connoisseur. you find the oddest correspondances. when i read a book i smell it probably every two minutes, like a fetishist.

old wooden buildings the good ones have a musty, oldentimes smell that is like old books but not the same

i love it. my grandma played tennis when i was a kid, and the club rooms were always old turn of the century wooden meeting hall places. the smell reminds me of urns, cups of tea & meat-paste sandwiches
