It was never discussed but I'd guess that my dad probably smoked weed at some point in his life.

I am 100% sure that my mom has never even been around people who were doing illicit drugs.

my mom smoked some weed at a Jimi Hendrix concert iirc. i think she claimed that was the only time she tried it, which i believe. my dad was in a seminary around the same time, i think he just drank beer. they were pretty square in the '70s i think.

dad was a secret drinker but otherwise my parents were the squarest of possible squares, never tried anything, never interested in it, initially baffled/horrified by their kids interest in such things. (we turned out okay)

pretty much this, though I guess it's just about *possible* that my mother could have tried weed (or at least been around with people who did), would be surprised though.

My parents pretty square, so while I'm not 100% sure they never did drugs, I'm confident enough to say "no."

Truthfully, I wouldn't be all that shocked to learn that Mom smoked weed once or twice in her youth (one of her siblings still a major league pothead, while another has a long-ago history of substance abuse), but Dad? No way. One time, in the mid-80s, he told us how shocked he was at catching a guy doing coke in the bathroom of a bar.

not when i was alive (or even a child), barely even remember any booze outside of like wine while dining out or beers at a family gathering. but still i'd have to say:

100% they smoked weed. and maybe other stuff. probably did blow once.

i mean they were teens in the late-60s-to-early-70s and twentysomethings in the mid-to-late 70s.

also my mom once told me "pot's not really a drug" so there's that.

a basset hound (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 19 August 2016 19:21 (eight years ago) link

first weed i ever smoked was my dad's, from behind his bed. knowing weed now, i know it was like a half pound. he smoked weed regularly as recently as five years ago when i went to visit and he casually pointed out a tall glass vase thing under the coffee table and told me to help myself. i did not help myself despite smoking weed regularly since secretly helping myself to his stash at approx 15 years old and getting high while watching kika on the drambuie showcase review. the last time i visited him, he talked about smoking salvia, in a very fratboyish way that put me off. the last visit, he was in action bronson heavy stoner phase where like he'd roll joints and smoke all day while still being completely functional.
my mom admitted to taking lsd after i high on lsd told her i was on lsd. she took lsd with my father. she said she wasn't into it. she definitely smoked weed as recently as a year ago.

I should add that my parents are this same age as well. I'm still confident that Dad is one of the very few people of his generation who has never touched a substance more illicit than alcohol, though.

took me an embarrassingly long time to discover that my mom (much more locally famous than me) smokes weed: while home from college (!) i bye-momed on my way out the door, got in the car, drove down the street, realized i'd forgotten my wallet, drove home, started to open the door, suddenly from behind it is the sound of frantic dorm-room scrambling.

told friends this story they were like "uh yeah."

It's possible my dad's smoked weed but he got defensive and scathing when I admitted without fuss or drama several years ago that I had.

In the last fifteen years they've discovered alcohol. They are now both social drinkers and delightful with a couple cocktails in'em.

I'm 100% sure they didn't. But they were born in 1922 and 1925, and raised in small towns, so what was available to them was limited to booze and cigarettes. My mom was raised to be teetotal, but relented in her 30s. My dad smoked, but even beer was a barely affordable luxury to him after marriage. By middle age they had no desire to branch out to unaccustomed drugs.

my mother-in-law is p much the opposite of my square parents. she's a little older and so came of age in the 60s, did all the drugs, as in lots of pot and coke, but also peyote, mushrooms, acid, tried heroin - injecting it the first time she tried it, which to me is bizarre, but in for a penny in for a pound I guess - drank a lot, worked in PR for media and hung out with famous people/rock stars procuring stuff for them sometimes. straightened up a year or two before my wife was born and ended up communications director for various provincial government ministries, and doing no drugs and hardly drinking. now at 68 she smokes weed every day but doesn't drink or do any other drugs.

I don't think that the Irish showband scene in 50's/60's Kerry taught my dad much about drugs, his ignorance of recreational drugs was hilarious. Druggies were "glue-sniffers" to him.

calzino, Friday, 19 August 2016 20:23 (eight years ago) link

Both of my parents were heavy smokers for 30-40 years, which I think counts. Tobacco is still a recreational drug, albeit a legal one.

Dad served multiple combat tours in Vietnam, where he did more than his share of pot and hash and maaaaay have done a little coke, although he's never confirmed that. He always enjoyed a few beers, and spent a few years in the mid-80s as basically a high-functioning alcoholic prior to seeking treatment for PTSD.

I never saw my mother drink more than a single glass of overly-sweet white wine, and that more than 25 years ago. Pot or anything else would have been out of the question for her.

I know my dad used to have a heroin problem in the 70s/80s, but probably stopped when he found the old religion.

My mom otoh had always told me that she'd tried this or that in the 60s, but never anything after. Years later, I found out she was buying coke from my aunt. Just recreational, but it was still pretty funny afterwards when I'd see her and my aunt go to the ladies room at a restaurant and come out a lot more, uh, jovial than before. Still waiting for the right moment to play that card on her.

Neanderthal, Friday, 19 August 2016 20:41 (eight years ago) link

don't know how to answer this. sure they smoked weed about like i did- casually, on an occasional basis, never became a regular thing for them. dad was a recovering alcoholic for close to 50 years. mom has been trying to quit cancer sticks for about that long, hasn't succeeded, but is unlikely to die from it. both my parents were pretty anhedonic.

weed was more popular among my uncles and aunts. i've also had some older relatives who weren't into pot when they were younger who are more interested now that they're reaching retirement age.

The one time my mom smoked weed, she spent 30 minutes telling her friend nothing had happened. Thirty minutes after that, she was at Taco Bell with a $10 bill and the following instruction for the drive-thru guy: "I've got ten bucks, surprise me!"

Dad: yes, definitely weed (found skins in his car when I was 14). But probably only an occasional smoker.

My mom actually scored weed to give to my aunt when she was having chemo, but my aunt refused it because she'd never even smoked a cigarette. After my aunt died, my mom sent me over to the house with the following instruction: "Your inheritance is in the medicine cupboard, downstairs." It was the untouched weed she got for my aunt.

My dad really really enjoyed his alcohol until the last few years of his life. Mom, the occasional half a beer. No pot or anything else that I know of.

Parents were boomers but not at all hip: Mom was repeatedly offered a joint while viewing a lunar eclipse with neighbours back in 1974-75 - which she kept declining because she had her store-boughts and didn't like home-rolled anyways. Dad had to take her aside later and explain what it was. And I doubt he'd had much (if any) experience himself; beer was his thing.

Nowadays, my sister and myself will smoke openly in front of Mom and she'll have an occasional toke or two, but never with any results (she's anticipating trying brownies someday)

Dad is 82 now. For most of his life he drank too much; now his limit seems to be a glass of wine in the evening. He was smoking two or three packs of cigarettes a day until he quit around age 40. He started smoking weed in his early 30s and always had it around after that, usually his own miserable homegrown, until he gave it up a few years ago. Probably he dabbled in pills, coke, and psychedelics during his partying years.

Mom enjoys a drink or two at Thanksgiving or Christmas, but that might be all she drinks in a year.

Brad C., Friday, 19 August 2016 23:26 (eight years ago) link

My dad grew up in the bay area and went to college in Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz in the '60s, pretty sure he smoked weed at some point before leaving California in 1970.
He quit drinking at bars around my eighth or ninth birthday and quit smoking and drinking completely when he was diagnosed with diabetes around my 16th (when he would have been 50ish).

I would guess that since my parents' best friends in the '70s owned a bar and then they owned one for a couple of years in the late '70s themselves and I'm pretty sure that at least my dad liked to party moderately hard, that there was an occasional dalliance with coke.

Never, my parents. Squares to the end. My mom's wild college years: "Once when I was in a sorority [ca. 1960] a few of the girls snuck into the dorm a bottle of rye. We each took a sip but it made my lips burn so I spat it out and had to lie on the couch for a while until I didn't feel sick. I couldn't even study that night."

My mum has tried weed but didn't like it. She's always been nearly teetotal. She smoked cigarettes in her early forties for a year or two because her boyfriend at the time smoked.

My dad is very anti-drugs because his brother is a (possibly ex now, but he's still an alcoholic) junkie. He's also very anti-smoking because his dad smoked 60+ a day. He drinks quite a bit though.

I did find out that my mum's dad was into pot and LSD and possibly even heroin in the 60s (my uncle told me he'd got heroin for someone else but not sure if he did it himself).

During my first year at university, my dad walked in on me and my roommate unannounced whilst getting high on weed; we were able to hide the bong before he could see it. He asked what that pungent odor was; I pretended not to know. Later that night he was driving my mother and me somewhere when he suddenly blurted out "hey, I just realized what that smell in your dorm room was - that was marijuana! I knew I had been busted and assumed he would pull me out of school, send me to rehab, not let me borrow the car keys for the next year, or much worse. I uttered something to the effect that maybe one of my roomie's friends had been doing things when I wssn't around, then somehow managed to change the conversation topic to something unrelated, and he never brought it up again and seems to have forgotten about it entirely. Decades later, I pondered asking him if he remembered that incident and why he didn't punish me in some way, but decided it was still best to let it go.

Both of my parents were heavy smokers but had mostly quit before I was born. My dad apparently drank alot when younger; my mother wouldn't touch drugs, even ones doctors had prescribed unless she deemed them absolutely necessary.
